    WARNING: Bitcoin Gold's official website linked to a scam wallet that stole user funds, including my own, for weeks.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2017 03:55 AM PST

    PLEASE UPVOTE FOR VISIBILITY THIS IS WARNING FOR THE COMMUNITY

    BTCGPU.org, the official website for Bitcoin Gold, linked to btcgpuwallet (https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:9GivHPo9LO8J:https://github.com/John-Dass/btcgpuwallet+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ge) for weeks.

    This tool supposedly tells you how much BTG you have and enables sending and receiving BTG.

    However, every single person who entered his seed in the tool has lost his BTG, me included. I have lost 34 BTG.

    This means your original bitcoin wallet is also compromised.

    This is only the latest in the farce that is BTG, their team have made no announcement, and since they premined a shitload of coins in my own opionion they should compensate us because it's their own incompetence that enabled a scammer to steal our coins.

    They simply removed the link, made no update, no announcement, nothing. Fuckers.

    The problem is massive, for example here's just one address for the attacker: https://btgexp.com/address/GWwkUS9VZXcq9Bx5MXUo7KYCojhr5xWZxC

    He has hundreds of addresses each having thousands of coins.

    Here is a snapshot of the official bitcoin gold website linking to the scam wallet even after the stealing had started:

    http://web.archive.org/web/20171113035025/https://bitcoingold.org/downloads/#

    I'm going to edit this to save the trouble: I don't give a shit about the 34 btg coins lost, and I'm not crying. If I really cared I wouldn't enter the seed online. I'm only warning others here. So save the "omg you idiot don't cry comments" to yourself. And it would be nice if the bitcoin gold team have some answers, they have been shady since day 1, and they continue to be prove that they are completely incompetent.

    GDAX... what happened?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2017 05:43 AM PST

    I need some help understanding how this stop loss was triggered and how is it possible that I payed the full taker fee.
    Yesterday, at about 10.00pm utc, I placed this stop loss at 6935€ for 0.2btc. It was never hit.
    Today, I found out that the whole order was executed at 6935€ and I even payed the full taker fee.

    I have an unhealthy obsession.

    Posted: 21 Nov 2017 09:27 PM PST

    I love crypto currencies. I love it so much that 95% of my net worth is in crypto coins. But I have gotten to the point where losing btc value over my holdings can cause such insomnia to my body that it's hurting my other aspects of life. I am a college student studying engineering and I couldn't study for my life this quarter because all I could think about is the daily returns off of my investments. I know I am doing fairly well for my age, but I am never happy because I always think about what if... scenarios everyday. I missed out on so many trades even though I had a sense of idea it was going to be good(BTC slump during august, BTC gold P&D, Antshares/NEO pump)... I am lost... The worst part about this is that I have successfully interfered with my college career which was my biggest accomplishment in my life so far considering I have worked my whole life towards getting into a top ranked engineering school on a full scholarship. I don't know what to do. Please help.

    Beware of Bittrex - Verification issue no withdrawal possible

    Posted: 22 Nov 2017 02:12 AM PST

    Since more than one month I am facing a nightmare. From one day to the other day Bittrex asked me to verify. It was very strange as I already have this account for quite a long time and my other account (with less funds on it) still works without any problems.

    I didn't want to trust bittrex with my data, and tried to withdraw all my funds, which unfortunately was not possible (only 0.025 daily limit). I had to decide: it rather will take a very long time and much money (fees) to withdraw my funds (0.025 steps) or I need to verify my account. I chose Option#2 and provided them with my personal data, basic verification failed so i tried enhanced, but it failed as well.

    I contacted Bittrex support several times, but I haven't received any reply since 1 1/2 months ! What basically means my funds are frozen!

    Enclosed a screenshot of my support ticket. http://preview.ibb.co/kwLetR/bittrex.png

    Something seems to be terribly wrong !

    UPDATE: Now I cannot even withdraw 0.025 BTC, as BITTREX says it would be over my allowed limit. Basically I am preparing legal steps, are there any other Users interested to open a Class Action Lawsuit ?

    Giving Crypto as Xmas Gifts

    Posted: 22 Nov 2017 08:01 AM PST

    I think crypto currency would be a pretty cool gift to give out this year. I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for what to buy for a $20 and $100 present.

    If I understand this correctly the more people who have the currency adds to its legitimacy. It sounds like giving out crypto as gifts could be a fun present and helping further stabilize the currency as legitimate.

    Proposal: Promote /r/BitcoinTrading

    Posted: 22 Nov 2017 08:29 AM PST

    I'm a long time member of this sub, but I participate a lot less frequently now. A lot of other posters from the olden days are long gone, and many more echo similar sentiments. Like a reverse Gresham's law, not only are there tons of bad posts, but bad posts are driving out good posts.

    The sub is absolutely swamped with content that doesn't belong here, and it's a mess. I admit I've made cynical comments to mods (sorry Zane), but I've never done much about it other than trying to create good content. The daily would be borderline empty if the rules were actually enforced. Here's a brief laundry list:

    1. "No memes or low effort content." posts sound more like a gd 4chan squawk-box than anything resembling market analysis. See, "FRIDAY DIP AMIRITE", "Jihad selling again," etc.

    2. Be excellent to each other. This sub used to be an enchanted forest away from the meme-lynchings of the other Bitcoin subs, but that's waned considerably. There were always a few assholes, but they've been allowed to flourish and multiply.

    3. No shilling / conspiracies - need I say more?

    This sub is no longer about bitcoin markets, and I'd like to bring it back. Here's my proposal: enforce the rules, and partner with /r/Bitcointrading. Squawkbox comments can be directed there, and comments should relate to bitcoin market analysis.

    Obviously nothing's perfect, enforcement is subjective, and people will get butthurt on all sides anyway. But i think kind, firm, positive reinforcement of good content and subreddit rules will help this sub flourish again.

    Is Vaultoro the right place for active investors?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2017 04:01 AM PST

    I am an active investor but not a trader. By being active I mean I am not just hodling but sometimes I sell and buy in order to manage risks or to take a chance on opportunities. This year it happened only on two occasions where I sold my bitcoins and bought in again about ten days later.

    However, due to the daily and monthly limits on exchanges like Kraken or Bitstamp even these very limited activities in times of action exceeded my daily, weekly and monthly limits. It takes me several days to withdraw my savings (no matter if it is fiat or btc) and once I hit the monthly limit all activities are blocked for one month.

    Afaik this is more or less the same on all fiat / btc exchanges due to money laundry prevention. I understand the legal constraints but nevertheless it does not sit well with me to have my btcs on an exchange (Mt. Gox!). I prefer to keep them in my hardware wallet.

    Now my question: Afaik on vaultoro these legal limitations do not apply as there the trade is btc against gold and gold is not a legal tender but a commodity as iron or pig meat. Personally I have no interest in gold but for me it doesn't make a difference if I go into USD, Euro or gold in between my trades. Therefore if something happens on the market by using vaultoro I will be able to react quickly to market circumstances and transfer/withdraw as many btc and as often as it suits me.

    So I am thinking about picking vaultoro as my new btc trading place. Am I right, is this what vaultoro is designed for and do you have any first hand experience with them?

    Trend following versus mean reversion on Bitcoin

    Posted: 21 Nov 2017 05:48 PM PST

    If the price has just gone up, should you buy hoping the price will rise even more, or should you sell, assuming the price will return to the long term average? In other words, does Momentum (trend following) or mean reversion dominate in Bitcoin? And is either of these two trading strategies profitable?

    In order to analyse this situation, I did some research. I analysed the USD Bitstamp prices from 1 January 2016 until one year later. I defined a strategy in which the algorithm would buy 1 btc if the price has gone up during the past T time, in order to sell it again T time later. (To preserve symmetry, the algorithm also buys 1/2 btc if the price has remained stable for the past T time and sells it T time later). In addition, I did the same for the opposite strategy: buying if the price has gone down. In both cases, the algorithm makes a decision whether to buy or not every second.

    Transaction or exchange fees where not taken into account. In addition, we don't know how the market would respond to such trading activity, so this we do not take into account either. Finally, it is not clear if exchanges in practices are able to carry out these transactions (i.e. whether exchanges are responsive enough, and whether we actually can buy at the last price point).

    Source code can be found on Github.

    The results were as follows (note that the sum of both strategies is equal to the holding result). I normalized the values assuming you can only afford to own 1 BTC max at each moment.

    Buy if price goes up Buy if price goes down
    T = 1 day $347 $181
    T = 1 hour -$318 $847
    T = 10 minutes -$3772 $4301
    T = 1 minute -$15276 $15805
    T = 10 seconds -$16150 $16678
    T = 1 second $2900 -$2371

    Holding throughout 2016: $528.65.

    The results show that if you look at day or hour level, both strategies performed not much better (and usually worse) than just holding. However, at 10 minute/minute/10 second level, buying if the price has gone up is clearly a horrible strategy, while buying if the price has gone down gives you a huge profit (but see the caveats above). Finally, at second level, buying if the price goes up seems again to be the better strategy.

    This is my first bit of technical analysis, so if anybody has any comments on my methodology or approach, I'm very interested to hear them.

    Disclaimer: please don't make any financial decisions based on this without independently verifying the correctness of my analysis.

    Trading on multiple exchanges: What's the catch?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2017 02:09 AM PST

    I came across this image that shows Bitcoin's price on multiple exchanges.

    It seems straightforward to buy BTC on the exchange with the lowest price and then sell it on the one with the highest price. Quick come up. But nothing is ever that easy, so what's the catch here?
