New Moons Are Ready! (Round 6)

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 03:30 PM PST

UPDATES: As mentioned last week, we will be lowering the requirement for distribution polls going forward, in order to make it easier for the community decide how to reward its own members with Moons. Specifically:

    • For a poll to pass, its winning option needs to have enough Moons to meet a decision threshold. This decision threshold will be set to a minimum of 10% of the Moons supply to start with.
    • The decision threshold will automatically update once a week. At that time, the new decision threshold will be calculated as the average of the existing threshold and the number of Moons cast in favor of the most highly-voted option in governance polls over the last 4 weeks. There will still be a 10% minimum of the existing Moons supply (it can't go lower than that).
    • When you create a poll, there will be a new flag to mark it as a governance poll (compared to regular opinion polls). These are the polls that will be used to make decisions and to update the decision threshold. If you are making a poll on Moons distribution, you will need to mark it as a governance poll.
    • We will be rolling out updates to web and the apps to reflect these changes. They will be rolled out before the next proposed Moons distribution (3 weeks from today).

On a separate note, the leaderboard will also be updated to reflect earned Moons only (currently it also counts Moons received in transfers).

    --

The next distribution of Moons is ready. You can claim your Moons through the Vault in the Reddit mobile app (iOS/Android).

Moons are r/CryptoCurrency's form of Community Points, a way for users to be rewarded for their contributions to the subreddit, and they can be used on premium features in the community.

This distribution is based on karma earned from 2020-09-30 to 2020-10-27. Here is the finalized list, with contribution scores signed by Reddit (users with no signatures yet do not have a registered Vault. They will be able to claim their Moons when they create their Vault through the Reddit app).

    --

UPDATE (11/4): We're aware of technical issues with claiming and using Moons. We are working to get it fixed. Your Moons will not be affected, and you will be able to claim them after we get the issue resolved. We will update here when it's fixed.

I paid off my house today

    Posted: 05 Nov 2020 12:10 AM PST

My life changed because of one silly post that I came across on reddit. It was a pic of someone holding up their paper wallet from a bitcoin atm showing both public and private keys. The picture made me wonder if there were any nearby bitcoin atms, so I did a quick google search and found an atm 20 minutes away from me. I went to the atm and put in 50$ just to say that I had some bitcoin. I signed up for /r/bitcoinbeginners and learned about Coinbase. After signing up with Coinbase, I started researching the "other" crypto being offered and learned about /r/cryptocurrency. I started buying eth at 8$ and eventually invested 30% of my net worth in crypto.

I stuck with eth during lows & highs and yes I do regret sometimes not selling at top during last bull run. This month I decided that I wanted to set a baseline on what I would get with my crypto investment. I sold enough eth and bitcoin to pay off the mortgage to my house and compensate for taxes. Today I went to the bank and turned in my final house payment. No matter what happens to crypto from here on out, I have a house. Paying off the house was never a goal for 2020. Hell, it wasn't even a goal for the next decade.

Do I think ETH will hit above $1400 again? Yes, and it might happen next week or next year or half a decade. I've never doubted the technology. However, getting rid of my mortgage takes an immediate, priceless weight off my shoulders. I work in an industry where layoffs always seem to be on the horizon, and it's hard to get a job when everyone is out of a job. Now I don't have to worry about keeping a roof over my family's head. The relief is euphoric.

I'm not completely off the crypto ride. I still have a good amount of eth left. I'm going to invest a small amount per month back into eth and bitcoin to slowly build my stockpile back up, but I'm not in any rush. I'd like to thank this sub as well as many others for all the knowledge, advice, and entertainment.

TLDR - Paid off my house with cryptocurrency gains. Financial freedom is something everyone deserves.

Friendly reminder to get your coins OFF the exchanges

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 01:06 PM PST

With BitMEX, OKex, Kucoin, and Huobi all seeming to have shit going down with regulators, hacks, etc. It seems like this will continue. Regulators are starting the purge and forcing this industry to become legit.

    1. These exchanges have NO problem freezing your funds for months and worst case you could lose them. Do you really think these exchanges have your best interests in mind? Fuck no, they want to look out for themselves.
    2. Withdrawing your coins is GOOD for YOUR coin's price. We have no proof the exchanges don't run on fractional reserves (remember QuadrigaCX?). Getting your coins off the exchange means less market manipulation, is healthier for coin price, and gives you peace of mind.

Want crypto to see more mainstream adoption and your coin's price to go up? Want to see a Bitcoin ETF? Do your part and remove your coins from the exchanges.

    Eth2 Contract Genesis Released

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 08:30 AM PST

    https://etherscan.io/address/0x00000000219ab540356cbb839cbe05303d7705fa

This means the official beginning of 2.0, after so much time waiting is finally happening.

Until now more than 1000 eth has been staked in the first minutes of the contract deployment, about 524.288 ether is necessary for the genesis event on the 1st of December, at this rate we will not see any issue for a lack of staked ethereum at genesis.

If you're interested into staking, please inform yourself extensively at https://launchpad.ethereum.org/ about how to setup a node and how to staking properly

Also you can read more about this in the Ethereum blog: https://blog.ethereum.org/2020/11/04/eth2-quick-update-no-19/

What alts are you considering as your safest bets for 2021?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 07:49 PM PST

I have an alt portfolio that is very 2018, where I got dominated loading up on projects like Tron, Neo, NCash and Substratum at the cycle's peak (😂 at me).

Changed my strategy and began focusing on accumulating as much Bitcoin as possible. Now I'm starting to look at my portfolio overall and feel the need to diversify a little, you know get involved in some of the "new-aged" alts.

I'm curious, what alts are you most confident will bring you gains as we move into next year?

    Some musings on payday eve

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 10:40 PM PST

Tomorrow is payday and I've been running on fumes fiat-wise for almost a week (due in no small part to my crypto habit lol). I literally spent my last dollar yesterday on a mixer for my nightly drinks.

Today at work I didn't have money to eat lunch, so I didn't eat. I did pull up and glance at a few mobile wallets: Natrium, Xumm, MEW. More than enough crypto for a fine meal. Only problem is nowhere to spend it. I had to ask myself what the hell am I doing? And the follow up question of am I the problem or everyone else?

I don't make much but still I compulsively trade real, hard-earned money for magic internet money that you can't spend anywhere.

On top of all that, I'm the only person I know who even thinks about blockchain. I think about it all the time, and spend more time on Reddit than conversing in person (even before the pandemic). I can't debate consensus mechanisms or governance or tokenomics with anyone I know. Is this how an only gay person in a small town in the 70's would've felt? (No need to bust my balls, I know it's not the same—they at least had a chance of getting laid in the next town over)

This isn't a pity post. I'm not necessarily unhappy. Just feeling weird, like I'm living entirely in a fantasy in my own mind. It's freaking me out a little. Anyone else ever feel like that? I'm still gonna YOLO on some ADA tomorrow...obviously.

I thought it would transform into a more discussive open place but it's mostly news now.... With the Random text post. What do you all think? Was the memes needed or is this new way the way forward?

UK pensions that invest in crypto?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2020 09:49 PM PST

I've got a pension that I would like to move to a fund that invests into crypto specifically - I've struggled to find any information on these. I emailed a few a month or two ago and just got the usual 'we don't do it, it's too risky etc'

Not sure if anyone knows of any options to get this existing fund moved to take advantage of the next year. Just feels like wasted capital right now!
