    Interchange/pass thru costs

    Posted: 31 Mar 2019 05:49 PM PDT

I think most individuals on this sub have a misconception about what it actually costs to process payments and why. Visa and MC set interchange rates (minimum cost to do business) every six months. Merchants typically are charged what's called an Interchange+ rate when accepting card payments for their ecommerce store. The interchange being the the pass thru cost set by visa MC and the + being the mark up from the payment processor (WF, B of A, PayPal, stripe etc.). Some processors, PayPal and stripe specifically, allow for a flat rate to be charged to the merchant and eat additional interchange costs, if there are any. Merchants processor statements are notoriously hard to read and auth fees, discount rates etc are often hidden in strange spots but this is mostly on purpose because, well processors think they can do this as a way to make money off the business owner. The point of this post is to let you know that the visa and MC networks are using payments rails built by them and Swift to decide how much to charge processors, and in the end, merchants. No, processors are not the devil, they are shackeled to the outdated payment system that is 40 years old and is currently being updated by Ripple as we speak. Lastly, I see people continually throwing around 3-5% cost figures for card processing. Not sure where this is coming from unless there are massive international charges but in my experience, costs are negotiated based on total payment volume, card data mix and average cost of products. 1.5 - 2.5% is closer to an average processing fee.
