Nick Johnson(ENS & ETH core dev)now supports the ETH network switching the PoW algorithm to ProgPOW Posted: 20 Sep 2018 01:50 AM PDT https://twitter.com/nicksdjohnson/status/1042382028837203968 I just want to say thank you u/nickjohnson for keeping an open mind about this issue. From what i recall initially you had some reservations about the need to switch from ethash to a new algo to maintain the stated goal of being ASIC resistant and were somewhat skeptical of the centralization threat posed by ASICS and the claims made by Chinese ASIC OEMs about their hashrate/efficiency figures. I always disagreed but respected your rationale and you unique perspective, being intimately involved with the engineering and development efforts in the eth ecosystem.I always thought the part where you questioned the risk/benefit ratio and how effective it would be to dedicate significant resources to switch the PoW algo when PoS was(at the time) thought to be just around the corner was absolutely valid. Now that PoS timelines have shifted and it's clear that ASICs targeting ethash are contributing to a significant portion of the network's hashrate i applaud you for revisiting your earlier stance and engaging in a discussion with the ProgPOW team, especially since they did alleviate the burden of designing a new algo and made deploying it a less onerous endeavor. I always thought the rationale behind ProgPOW was sound: Try to fully utilize every bit of silicon in a GPU so to design an ASIC targeting ProgPoW you basically end up recreating a full GPU, achieving minimal gains in efficiency and hashrate; all of this requiring significant engineering/manufacturing resources and time for tape-out etc. I understand timelines for the next HF are a concern and Constantinople is basically finalized,so i don't mind if it ends up being included in the next HF, Istanbul I'd be interested in seeing a more in depth explanation/write up of your thoughts on this matter. Also i hope at least *some* of the metrics you mention you had the opportunity to see privately will be made public. [link] [comments]

ETHBerlin: Winners and their reviews Posted: 20 Sep 2018 04:27 AM PDT Happy to announce these ambitious projects - we took our time as we wanted to get them properly (but shortly) reviewed. Check them out, they are really amazing - we are really proud. dApp report coming soon, we are having interviews with the UX teams of each dApp we used, getting their reports, but happy to hint too that in a day, Zinc onboarded 100 people to their ERC-725 identity and Gnosis' Olympia registered the highest trading market so far through our People's Choice Awards. Ethereum is alive :) [link] [comments]

Working Ethereum "instagram clone" that incentivizes likes Posted: 20 Sep 2018 12:51 PM PDT This project is up and running with an active user base. You get paid for likes in BELA token: https://www.belacam.com/ It's not quite a full DApp since it runs as a classic web application. Bela is spent/paid off-chain as you award and collect likes. But users can deposit/withdraw BELA to any Ethereum wallet. A very cool use of an ERC20 token imo, and on the list of tokenized projects that is actually up an running. We're now listing BELA on Ethex (the DEX for useful tokens) so you can exchange it for ETH. More info https://medium.com/ethex-market/bela-now-listed-on-ethex-7c89d9b5abb9 [link] [comments]

What are the most relevant determinants in cryptocurrency adoption? Posted: 20 Sep 2018 10:51 AM PDT Hi everyone, We are a research team from the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL), in Portugal, and during the last weeks we've been collecting responses to our questionnaire but still need a few more to achieve our target. Some interesting pre-results confirm what we expect, that people with different cryptocurrencies having different perceptions regarding what they value and geography also has a big impact on why people adopt cryptocurrencies. On the other hand, some determinants we initially thought were relevant, are not. The detailed results with infographics and the most important conclusions of the study will be published by the end of October (estimation). Here is the link for the questionnaire if you want to contribute: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/cryptocurrencies_usage More details if you want to read: Regarding the construction of the questionnaire, it was based on Likert type scale questions. We considered 10 different dimensions, from perceived usefulness to privacy to profitability, among others. It has some focus on the financial area, but this does not mean it is the most important. We know there are some other dimensions not being addressed in this questionnaire, such as decentralisation/government influence, that may be addressed in the future. It takes on average 3 minutes to answer. Your input is really important for this research and to help us and other researchers to boost academic knowledge in this area. There are no open questions, but you can message me or post in the comments if you feel so. Thank you all for your participation! [link] [comments]
