What will you do when Volta arrives?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 04:27 AM PST

I wanted to start a small discussion. What is your plan for when Volta arrives?

Will you sell your current GPUs and 'upgrade' your rigs to Volta cards? Will you sell them once you have bought Volta cards or will you sell them before to avoid depreciation?

Will you wait to hit ROI on your current cards (even though their profitability and resale value will probably go down) before selling them?

IMO the way to go is selling the cards after being able to secure some Volta ones, because I believe profitability will decrease for older models.

Now, I dont know if it will be worth it, depends on the price difference between selling your old card and buying a new one, and if the hashrate increase/daily profit justifies doing it, and what the ROI for that difference will be.

What is your opinion on this situation?

Merry christmas and happy mining as well :)

    1080 Not Ideal?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 07:26 AM PST

My brother in law is going to sell me his EVGA FTW 1080 for 400$. I had planned on saving a little more for a 1080ti but this seems like a great deal.

Why have I read that it's not a great card for mining?

    Easiest way to install windows

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 07:22 AM PST

What's the easiest way to install windows (maybe without a cd drive)? I have a copy of windows 8 from a PC build a couple years ago but i feel like using a cd drive and updating to windows 10 would take a week itself lol. Whats an efficient and inexpensive way to go about it? TiA

Lowered MH's after adding 2 more rx 580 and afterburner not working

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 06:12 AM PST

    Hello

I have been minig ethereum, for a week, with claymore mining, with 2 sapphire nitro+ rx 580 8GB's , getting arround 31.8 mhs each. Today i added 2 more gpus same model. When i connect it all. i get 28mh's on each one and the fans seem to not work fast enough, thus not cooling the cards.

Note that i have these settings on the .bat file :

    -tstop 85 -tt 65 -fanmin 60 -fanmax 100 -cclock 1130 -mclock 2150 -cvddc 850 -mvddc 850 -r 60

One more thing is, MSI afterburneer is fully grey-ish, which doesent allow me to do anything to thee cards.

I am running on win 10 64; claymore v10.0 ; AMD drivers 17.12.2 with computing mode enabled; BIOS ROM: Sapphire NITRO+ 580 8GB Hynix 30MHs

    Thank you very much

Growing a rig, which would you choose?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 05:49 AM PST

Currently have 2 1070ti's. I'm at the point where I'm considering getting 3-4 more 1070ti's or 2 1080ti's. Also will be purchasing an additional power supply depending. Currently have a 750w. Which route would you choose? Either purchase would require some upgrading, new motherboard, proc, ram, power supply.

    Thanks.

13 GPU problems : MSG buffer full gpu stuck - 8GB Ram?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 02:27 AM PST

Hey guys! I started to build 2 rigs with 13 cards but both of them cause problems with simpleminingOS and dstm miner. Problems: 1) The hashrate slowly goes down from 5400 sol to 3000 and less. 2) I get MSG buffer full gpu stuck messages and shutdowns. Is it possible that 13GPU rigs need more than 4GB Ram to run fine? Maybe 2x4GB? Or is the Intel G3900 too weak for 13? Thanks for your help!

Worth it to wait for volta?

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 01:39 AM PST

Is the 1180/2080 whatever its called worth the wait? Titan v looks really good for games, but mining it seems to be lacking. Should i get some Ti's or wait for volta? Going to retire some 7950s.

    Power consumption issues

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 01:35 AM PST

So, I just got my first rig running. I run 4x1070ti on 80 power limit +150 core +650 mem (btw, can I safely push those values further???) and 60% fan speed. I enabled power efficiency readouts in the EWBF miner and they all draw around 140 watts each according to that. I also have a watt meter....but it says that the rig draws 1250 W!!!! My PSU is 1200 W platinum...is it just that stupid power gauge or should I start being worried? I pushed my cards up a notch to 85% power, which led to the gauge showing 1350W, which should be impossible in theory...

    220MH/s Lyra2v2 w/ Dual TitanVs

    Posted: 23 Dec 2017 02:55 PM PST

    https://github.com/KlausT/ccminer/issues/101

A bug report about klaust ccminer being slow turns into it being the fastest miner for lyra2v2.

Apparently, the Volta architecture needs fine tuning. Still not a good ROI card for mining, but makes you wonder what else can be done to optimize. Like matrix math on the tensor cores.

Noob mining - Nicehash doesn't detect GPU

    Posted: 24 Dec 2017 12:26 AM PST

After putting everything together tonight on my first ever mining build (single 8gb RX 570 gpu for now) and updating all drivers, I tried opening up Nicehash, and found some reason the GPU isn't detected (only the CPU is). Any ideas?

Please bear with me as this is my first PC build, and am not technically inclined. :)

Items i've found invaluable in the set up of my small farm.

    Posted: 23 Dec 2017 11:39 AM PST

Started setting up a small farm a few weeks ago. Went from absolutely nothing to 50gpu's. Set aside your 'you don't belong' for now we can argue about that later, for now just sharing some tools i've found invaluable in the setup:

    1. Laser thermometer $15+
    • Very handy for checking temps of GPUs and power supplies versus what the software says. Surprising amount of discrepancy!
    1. Flir Thermal Imaging Camera
    • Pricey, but I had one previously from inspecting my house for thermal leaks around windows and vents. Makes for some good sex pictures too. GREAT for if your rig "loses" a GPU and you aren't certain which one. I look at them through this thing and can clearly see which one isn't hot. Also good for showing where heat is building up so you can move things around to get better airflow. At $300 its not for everyone but its been super useful.
    1. Box Fans
    • Case fans or any type of 120mm fan is a huge waste of money IMO. I'm a big opponent of making "pretty" rigs. Look, if you're trying to win a beauty contest I get it, but i'm here for function. Case fans don't cut it. This 20" box fan runs about 150w peak at the wall on full blast and can cover 2 rigs if placed correctly.
    1. [Fire Extinguishers[(https://www.amazon.com/Fire-Gone-2NBFG2704-Suppressant-Canisters/dp/B0051TPJKG/ref=sr_1_5?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1514057884&sr=1-5&keywords=fire+extinguisher)
    • I mean why risk it

Theres plenty more, but stuff thats a no-brainer. Just thought i'd throw my support behind the Box Fan Master Race

Awesome Miner + Zpool is Only using SHA on 1080Ti?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2017 09:11 PM PST

I have a 1080 Ti and in no way is mining SHA coins with a GPU profitable at all. Does anyone know how to fix this so it mines profitable coins?

Building a rig frame: Dimensions for gpu cross bars?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2017 09:02 PM PST

What is the typical distance from where the GPU metal tab sits on the top bar to the lower bar where the gpu rests on? Either with the riser resting on the bar or the back end of the card near the pci-e plug.

    Are these risers safe?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2017 07:10 PM PST

My rig consists only of GTX 1070s. I've read a lot about risers catching fire if you use SATA for high powered ones like the 1070.

I received some risers but they still have SATA power cable. Tried to look for some online that don't have SATA, just molex or 6 pin but it looks like they all have SATA on one end of the power cable or the other.

Can you please let me know if these risers are safe for my cards?

How much better are gpu wholesale prices?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2017 02:06 PM PST

Hey guys quick question, I own a business and have an LLC with tax number and business accounts and etc, I'm just curious is anything stopping me from buying GPU's for wholesale? How much do they run compared to regular MSRP?

    thanks

What’s the most efficient GPU out there?

    Posted: 23 Dec 2017 10:11 AM PST

From a purely hash per watt perspective? I've heard 1070ti but can't find a lot of data to back that up.

Does motherboard RAM frequency have effect on any algorithm while mining with GPU?

Is the memory controller load supposed to be this unstable? Hash increases and decreases accordingly.

    zcash to usd question

    Posted: 23 Dec 2017 11:08 AM PST

what is the common practice to mine zcash and convert to usd for deposit?

do you mine to a wallet and then move to exchange and then move to another wallet like coinbase ? do you use changely/shapeshifter for that ? or do you mine directly to an exchange (if thats even a thing)

would appreciate any advice, as im on my first week of mining, and still have lots to figure out.
