Is there any reason Ethereum can't use an existing high integrity language like ADA Spark for smart contracts?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2017 09:58 PM PST

To start with I'm a massive fan of the platform and the work the core Ethereum team are doing.

I'm curious as to the reasoning for developing a new programming language for smart contracts.

It appears there are good candidates that could be used instead. Using existing languages could save development effort and reduce risk by making use of already optimised and safe languages.

For example the DOD has spent a lot of money already creating ADA Spark which allows the development of provable bug free applications (excluding compiler bugs). It is also quite a verbose language, but that's the trade-off you pay for security.

Solidity appears to be designed for ease of development. This is important of course for adoption, but smart contracts are not web pages where the odd javascript bug is acceptable. Smart contracts are permanent, high stakes and have more in common with a processor design than a web page.

Is there a particular reason or would looking into integrating a language like ADA Spark be a worthwhile project?

EDIT: Found this thread from a year ago with some comments, it appears Augur's Joey Krug was also interested in using ADA Spark. https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/5cpplr/a_few_clarifications_on_viper_serpent_and_hlls/

BestEthereum wallet to use? Something simple like Electrum for bitcoin but as reliable?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2017 08:39 AM PST

Mist is terrifying with all the shapeshifting, ether, and what not. I might sound totally clueless but I've been 30 hours in to this game. I have some Ethereum I bought from an exchange and all i want to do is simply store it offline! Thanks.

EDIT: For OSX and iOS please.

Will staking pools be able to adjust how much each staker gets?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2017 12:29 PM PST

I was thinking about incentives in PoS and it occurred to me that large staking pools would probably not give the same percentage returns to small stakers as those with thousands of ether who actually run the pool. Those who run the pool are probably staking the most Ether and put up all the money to run the node itself, and so will feel justified in taking a bigger return. Small stakers may also be forced to absorb the natural variation in PoS returns and will be guaranteed (by the pool operators) a return which is a few percentage points lower than the current theoretical return based on the inflation rate and total amount of ether staked. In such a situation, the large stakers/pool operators could make more than 8% (assuming PoS return is 8%).

While this sounds bad, it would also encourage people to start their own pool rather than join a large one, since most large pools would be doing this. But that's a good thing, since more smaller pools is better for decentralization. Competition among larger pools may encourage them to give more points to the small stakers, but the returns that pools get from staking more and more Eth falls off pretty quickly, limiting the power of this incentive.

So, will pool operators be able to adjust the returns that stakers get? What do you think about the incentives here and what do you think will actually end up happening?

I got a refund for my personal loan for school.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2017 01:56 PM PST

The interest on it is 10%. The responsible thing to do is to put it back into the loan. But I feel like the smart thing to do is to put it into Ethereum. I feel like there's close to a 0% chance that Ethereum doesn't beat 10% returns this year.

    Thoughts?

Edit: Title should say private loan.

"So you can have an account in some universe or you can have a contract in some universe and you can send a transaction in some universe and if you send a transaction in some universe it only affects stuff in some "

And rightly so. However, this is VB who said it and it could well change the world.

    I just quarted.

Why wouldn’t the RDN token be worth more than ETH?

Given that it will be the fee used for most transactions.
