Announcing ΞXTΞND - a Chrome browser extension that lets you tip or buy gold with ETH on reddit!

    Posted: 20 Nov 2017 07:52 AM PST

    Hi guys,

During past several weeks we have been working on Chrome extension whose purpose is to bring Ethereum to various social websites such as reddit. This is accomplished by making slight modifications to certain web pages (such as adding "tip" button to reddit posts) while having an Ethereum light client integrated into the extension. In the initial release, a user can send tips to other reddit users or buy them reddit gold with ETH directly.

When using ΞXTΞND for the first time, you will have to link your reddit account to the Ethereum address that has been generated by the extension. This process uses reddit OAuth, Ethereum smart contract and Oraclize.it service and the entire process might take 2-3 minutes. Have a look at our blog post for more details.

All code has been open sourced and available for inspection on Github: https://github.com/DecenterApps/Extend

The extension can be installed either by buidling the code from Github or from Chrome Web Store directly: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/extend/babconedajpngaajmlnnhpahcladpcna

We are very excited to hear your feedback and improvement suggestions! :)

    PSA! Fake Coinbase email scam

    Posted: 20 Nov 2017 08:53 AM PST

I got a fake email from no-reply@coinbase.group which said the following (formatted like a real Coinbase email)

Subject: You just sent 1.44804 ETH to 0x598944a224d65f4F8AD1fB0828308556F11D7543

    Body:

Congratulations! You have successfully sent 1.44804 ETH (worth $518.72 USD) to 0x598944a224d65f4F8AD1fB0828308556F11D7543 using Coinbase. To facilitate this transaction, you paid 0.00021 ETH (worth $0.08 USD) in network fees. This withdrawal is being sent to an address ("0x598944a224d65f4F8AD1fB0828308556F11D7543") that you haven't previously used.

If you believe your account activity is unauthorized, please click the button below to cancel the transaction and restore access to your account.

The email also include a link to "cancel the transaction" which sent me to a fake Coinbase website. http:// briansings .com/

So, don't trust your emails people. Keep your eyes open.

Good news coming in the next weeks and months

    Posted: 20 Nov 2017 12:09 AM PST

    This month:

    • microRaiden. Achieves instantly and without fees thousands of transactions per second. This first version is for Ethereum tokens, which makes trivial the transfer of ETH too (see explanation 1 at the end of the post).
    • Casper test network. Casper is the next version of Ethereum, where everyone can be a "miner" and earn money, because Ethereum abandons the electricity-wasting mining invented by Bitcoin. With Casper, being a miner means staking ETH in the network and offering a very little bit of computer power. Miner's money is left intact and (s)he is rewarded if (s)he does a good job. The security does not arise from energy wasting computations, but because any attempt to cheat the security will be penalised by the network (ETH removed from the stake). It means that people are incited to accumulate ETH now and hold once Casper is alive. The more you buy now that the price is cheap, the more you can earn later.

    In 2018:

    • ETH futures. Futures trading is coming before June 2018, as announced by Bloomberg a few days ago.
    • Upgrade of the network, with an intermediary version before Casper, based on hybrid security : traditional miners will still be able to mine, and stakers will also be allowed, as described above. Later, Casper will be fully deployed, only staking will be possible.
    • More than 200 companies (such as Intel, Microsoft, JP Morgan, ING, Bank of America, UBS, Mastercard, ...) are part of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance. They started to develop almost one year ago and the first outcomes might be released.

1: It allows for creating a decentralised system (contract) which receives your ETH budget, then convert your payments to tokens, transfers them through microRaiden, and your recipient withdraws the corresponding ETHs when the channel is closed.

ETH added to the LoMoStar App!

    Posted: 20 Nov 2017 09:10 AM PST

Apologies if I come off as shilling another coin or w/e, just thought you would be interested to know another place ETH can be used. ETH has been added to the LoMoStar(Lomocoin/LMC) App.

I'll save you from me trying to explain LoMo to you, you can see for yourself if interested, but basically, what does this mean to you?

You can drop ETH as treasures on the GPS-based app to convince people to go to those locations, as well as offer discounts or other things for that business.

Basically, think pokemon go lures. Businesses would set lures up to attract people there, and those people might buy something while they are there.

Similar concept. You use your ETH to place an envelope at that business. You also place a 20% off coupon inside the envelope. Users see the envelope on their GPS and obviously want free stuff, so head to the location, open it, and see a discount for idk... coffee. Why not grab a coffee!

    App details here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lomocoin.lomocoin

If you believe I should move this post to ethtrader instead, or somewhere else, or you just don't care, please let me know i'll gladly adjust!

PSA: Coinbase fake email header: "New Device Confirmation"

    Posted: 20 Nov 2017 02:49 PM PST

I just saw a similar case being reported, so I thought I would share this attempted phishing email attack I received from no-reply@co'I'nbase.com (I modified the domain to prevent users navigating there,it's a modified i ).

The email has object "New Device Confirmation", has perfect formatting and requires authorizing a new device or location.

Usually do not fall for spam, this one was so particularly well written that I almost did follow the link. Then something popped to my mind and I realized I wanted to double check the sender, which of course was not coinbase.

Hope not many will fall for this, but it's super well written

How will Ethereum development, adoption, and price respond to Net Neutrality reversal in the U.S.?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2017 12:40 PM PST

Some background, as I know we're not all U.S. residents:

On Wednesday, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will outline new rules that will transfer power of regulating internet service providers from the FCC to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) - a move that will reverse regulations that ensured Internet Service Providers (ISPs) would serve websites without bias.

The change is likely to pass as Trump appointed FCC chair, Ajit Pai, and two other Republicans control three of five votes on the new ruling. Amongst other things, the changes will allow ISPs to throttle access to some parts of the internet and provide 'fast lanes' for others.

    Some questions:

    • How will Ethereum development respond to this new, restrictive, environment?
    • How will blockchain development in general respond?
    • How will the changes impact Ethereum protocol adoption?
    • What will happen to the price?
    • Is the U.S. significant enough in this realm of globalized technology that restrictions as such can permanently cripple development/adoption/price?

      Bonus question!

    • How will InterPlanetary File Sharing (IPFS) react to the new rules?

Secure Entropy For Crypto Secret Generation - Looking for review help

    Posted: 20 Nov 2017 01:21 AM PST

Hi guys, we at AirGap.it are putting a lot of effort into making crypto more secure and ultimately more accessible for everyone. We just released an open source javascript app to generate secrets securely by mixing/adding different sources of entropy.

The idea is that using the standard native secure random API's is not enough (e.g. what myetherwallet is doing) for secret generation because one does not actually know with how much entropy the PRNG has been seeded. For this reason we pipe:
    - voice/microphone stream
    - video stream
    - mouse movements

into a SHA3 hash and ultimately use the native secure random as additional source of entropy. The output is an mnemonic string that can be used with Ethereum, Bitcoin, etc (see https://iancoleman.io/bip39/).

It would be great if someone could help us reviewing the code (it's pure JavaScript and less than 100 lines of code) and check if it makes sense.

The live App can be found here: GitHub Pages
The source code can be found here: GitHub

We'd really like to hear your feedback on this comments/ideas on how to make this more accessible or more secure are really appreciated.
