    Theme Contest Winners

    Theme Contest Winners

Greetings holders. We're pleased to announce the mod team has finished voting on all the submitted entries for the theme contest and the winners have been selected. Obviously, there was a disparity in participation between the theme contest and the banner contest. The meager level of involvement might have been due to an increased challenge. People with CSS skills are probably harder to come by then people with graphic design skills. If that's the case, these volunteers deserve even more praise. Regardless, there's no doubt the few and exceptional contestants we had put plenty of time and effort into designing these themes and we want to give our appreciation and thanks them.

So without further ado, here are the winners:

    1st place: u/Grily - entry

    2nd place: u/cellode - entry

    3rd place: u/shy - entry

Also, thank you to u/Elderguard(entry) and u/trust_me_im_OPs_Mum(entry) for participating.

No donations were collected from the community and only a few mods offered to donate. The prize money has been allocated in the same manner as last time. To assist with upgrading r/CryptoCurrency to the new theme as well as maintaining our stylesheet, u/Grily and u/cellode(backup/assistance) have been added to the mod team.

    Congratulations to our winners!

    Going Forward

The new theme probably won't be pushed to the main sub until Wednesday at the earliest. Also, the latest word is it will take at least two weeks to rebuild the current ticker into the one on r/CryptoFever. It looks like the existing ticker tape will stay with us for the time being.

Since there was a market reaction from the community over our top banner choice, we will allow feedback from the community in choosing which banner to implement in the new theme. You will only be able to choose from the top 3 winning banners. To help make your choice, u/Grily made screenshots of all three banners in both light and dark versions of his theme, see here. Please choose your banner by stating the name of artist, see this thread for help.

Our next project on the horizon will be a recruiting campaign. We haven't decided on how we will carry out this endeavor, but we will make a decision soon. Stay tuned.

    Thank you for your attention.

    Bitfinex/Tether must prove Solvency - Refuse UDST/Bitfinex

    Posted: 19 Nov 2017 11:25 AM PST

There is a large amount of community concern with the legitimacy of Tether and the connection to Bitfinex. Most people have suggested launching investigations into the two, but lets be real, we are an unregulated community, so no authority is going to investigate in the near future.

    The Solution:

The community as a whole has to demand that Tether and Bitfinex prove Solvency of both the exchange and the coin. We need to refuse to transact in USDT and refuse to transact on Bitfinex. What this means is take all of your trading to another exchange, and get rid of all of your Tether (I understand that in order to get rid of Tether someone else has to buy it, but I would recommend not being the one buying/holding it).

If we want this company to prove legitimacy and solvency we must STOP USING THEIR PRODUCTS. The crypto community has enough troubles between Bitconnect/Scam ICOs/the Public Media with proving the legitimacy of crypto that we don't need true fraud occurring on one of our biggest exchanges. Yes if we prove that Tether/Bitfinex have been printing USDT without USD backing it will hurt the community in the short term, but it will ultimately prevent a bigger disaster in the future. And if they are able to prove solvency/legitmacy it will reduce skepticism, which we all know, we don't need any more of that.

Confido just deleted everything proving their existence

    Posted: 20 Nov 2017 03:21 AM PST

For people who don't know... Confido had a crash of 90% of their value last night after posting that they would halt the development of the project after a legal issue they didn't specify.

Their Reddit and Twitter where full of angry investors. Do they took them down, along with their website.

I guess it was a scam after all...

    Lessons & Reminders When Investing

    Posted: 19 Nov 2017 03:12 PM PST

Cryptocurrency and the market surrounding it is all the rage right now. It's exciting and volatile, yet dangerous and high risk. Additionally, it seems as though a lot of the younger generation are getting involved alongside the older. I am part of this younger generation, and am a little concerned about the risks that the majority of you (we) are taking with our investments/speculative investments. I wanted to write this to stir up a little bit of needed discussion and to highlight some valuable insights and reminders for when we participate in markets like these.

I've been skimming through "The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham for the second time, and can't help but realize that the insights provided in this book are all the more relevant today. This is a book that Warren Buffet picked up and read thoroughly when he was nineteen years of age, and has up until this day stated that it is "by far the best book on investing ever written." Now, don't get it twisted, just because the beloved Warren Buffet has endorsed a book, doesn't mean you should take everything in it to heart. At least I haven't. But there are extremely valuable insights in this book that I want to share with everyone who hasn't had the luxury of reading this book.

"It has long been the prevalent view that the art of successful investment lies first in the choice of those industries that are most likely to grow in the future and then identifying the most promising companies in these industries."

Surely, the cryptocurrency market is the most exciting market to exist since the boom of the internet. However, only the lucky and skilled have survived that dot-com bubble with satisfying financial gains. Even the most promising of companies in that time have failed. We have to understand that for 95% of the current projects in this space, investments are speculative and dangerous. Just because your buddy's buddy's dad's friend from Tokyo has had enormous success with risky investments in cryptocurrency, doesn't mean that you should take similar risks with your savings when you are not financially viable of doing so.

This is a new space of technology and you should be thankful that you are here this early to witness a potential revolution. This does not mean that you should rush into investments and spend money on ICOs just because there is a 15-page whitepaper written surrounding potential ideas.

Be smart. Be intelligent with your investments, and do your own research. Do not follow hype, and practice a little bit of chart reading- look at the all time lows and highs. Do not day trade if you are inexperienced unless you are happy with losing money. Don't let yourself get emotionally attached to these investments, and have patience. I am so tired of hearing about these enormous losses people are having with their investments- it's very saddening. A lot of us are average Joe's hoping for extravagance.

This topic of discussion is not new, but it needs to have prevalence.

Let us be reminded of Graham's guidelines of investment:

    • You must thoroughly analyze a company, and the soundness of its underlying businesses, before you buy its stock;

    • You must deliberately protect yourself against serious losses;

    • You must aspire to "adequate," not extraordinary, performance."

Furthermore, "An investor calculates what a stock is worth, based on the value of its businesses. A speculator gambles that a stock will go up in price because somebody else will pay even more for it."

There needs to be emphasis on the legitimate value of a company, not the market price of it's stock.

But I won't sit here and preach quotes from a singular book all day- I just want to promote positive discussion regarding the safety and value of our investments.

With this being said, I have single-handedly witnessed millions of dollars be thrown away by this community, by the likes of scammers, poor investment decisions, emotional turmoil, etc. Please, if you've read this far, triple check your URL's, purchase a hardware wallet when handling more than $1,000 in cryptocurrency, do not click on Google AdWords links, do not click on links from personal messages, do not publicly announce that you're heavily invested, and do not let your emotions get the best of you.

I'm just a young kid. Some of you have 100-10,000x more invested than me, yet I see some of you fall prey to these negative disturbances in the market. It kind of hurts, and for some reason, a lot of us will not learn until tragedy strikes.

Stay safe, and I hope you prosper. Cheers.
