    Frequently Asked Questions

Where's the best place to buy ETH?

There are many centralized exchanges that support Ethereum. If you live in the US, the most popular exchanges are Coinbase, Gemeni and Kraken. Coinbase users can use Coinbase Pro for lower fees.

    When is Eth2 launching?

Eth2 is a marketing term used to represent a number of updates to Ethereum. The Eth2 proof-of-stake chain first launched in December 2020. "The Merge", which is the event that will fully switch Ethereum's consensus to proof-of-stake, is estimated to be ready in early 2022, although there is no exact timeline. Other updates, such as data shards, will follow that update.

Visit ethmerge.com to learn more about "The Merge".

Do I need to do anything to update to Eth2? Will Eth2 create a new token?

No, ETH holders never need to take any action to keep holding ETH. Ethereum users will be unaffected by the Eth2 upgrade. And the Eth2 updates will not create any new tokens.

How can I stake my ETH?

There are two ways that you can stake your ETH: by running your own validator, or providing your ETH to a staking pool.

    • Running your own validator requires a modern computer and 32 ETH. Visit /r/ethstaker for more details
    • Staking pools accept any amount of ETH. We recommend Lido or StakeWise

Why are Ethereum transaction fees so high?

Like most blockchains, Ethereum fees are determined by supply-and-demand. The large demand to use Ethereum has pushed transaction fees quite high (however, fees were just a few cents only 2 years ago). Fees are especially high during market volatility, and during NFT drops.

What is being done to lower Ethereum transaction fees?

Ethereum fees are reduced by using layer-2 rollups. Rollups are scaling solutions that allow for significantly cheaper transactions, while still maintaining Ethereum's security.

Additionally, Eth2's data shards will make rollups even cheaper.

While rollups are cutting-edge technology being actively developed, a number are already live on Ethereum mainnet. Visit l2beat.com to learn more about rollups.

What's the best wallet for Ethereum?

The most popular tool for using decentralized applications is Metamask. However, for security reasons, we recommend using a hardware wallet such as a Trezor or Ledger.

Why did the ETC classic hard fork create a new coin but these recent forks don't?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 05:38 AM PDT

Is this understanding correct: Really, they all make a new coin, it just happens to be that everyone switched over so those old coins don't mean anything, while by ETC, they cared enough to legitimize the coin? If this is the case, why don't I need to do anything with my ETH during a hard fork? Wouldn't I need to transfer it to the new chain like in the ETC example?

Edit: I understand why ETH/ETC forked, I want to know how that specific fork resulted in a new coin

How are you utilizing your ETH other than just holding?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 07:12 AM PDT

Given the gas fees madness, every time I tried to use ETH on any defi or anything other than transferring from wallet to wallet, I end up losing sizeable amount of money to gas fees.

So I wonder if it is just me, or this how it is: just hold to sell at one point when there is enough reasons to sell?

Can I use my old ETH private key to get forked ETC?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 12:39 PM PDT

I've got an old ETH private key wallet that used to have a few ETH in it. I moved the ETH out of it a year or so ago.

Am I eligible for any forked bounty? I did something similar with BTC when it forked to Bitcoin cash BCH. I ended up getting the equivalent of BCH at the time of the fork.

Is there anything similar for Ethereum?

Announcing Gasprice.io - The most advanced EIP-1559-optimized Gas Price estimator that forecasts the gas price from the miner's perspective.

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 04:09 PM PDT

We're pleased to announce that using our extensive experience with the Ethereum mining & Transaction sorting, we've launched gasprice.io - the most sophisticated and accurate gas price estimator & transaction pool analysis platform. As a mining pool, we're required to make regular payouts to over 31,000 miners hourly, where one wrong estimation can cause everything to be stuck, effectively halting all our payouts. As a replacement for defunct gasnow.org, we've used all our knowledge and experience to create the most advanced gas price estimator. Our estimation engine is powered by evaluating the entire transaction pool and assembling as if it was a single huge block. We're the ones loading transactions onto blocks, so we know the actual price that transactions need to be priced at to be included as we're the ones that decide. No more guessing, we tell you the prices needed to be included on blocks with updates every 1 second (every 0.1 second WS updates coming soon).

With our website you will now be able to better plan out when you use the network to reduce the amount you spend on fees.

Features include: - Past 30 days gas price analysis and suggested day and price to use the network based on past data. - Insights into past gas use by day. - Breakdown of gas used by popular transactions. - Deep transaction pool analysis and advanced transaction queue visualization from the miner's perspective. - Real time data - Free API without rate limiting (coming soon)

Please check it out and let us know if you have any feedback or suggestions.

Frustrated with gas prices - How is the future of decentralized finance?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 12:29 PM PDT

Wake me up when the gas war is over. I can't do anything on ethereum without it costing at least $100. Hard to believe this is the future of decentralized finance. I just wanted to swap $50 of coin A to coin B, and the gas was $102. I know people are going to say "well just swap bigger amounts so the gas fee doesn't seem like it's 90% of the transaction cost", I know I can. But how is this the future of finance if the average joe can't exchange without it costing them more in gas. The answer from ethereum maximalist is always "Just be less poor", not a great defense of the tech.

Need help converting crypto into Tether on Ethereum blockchain

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 05:13 PM PDT

    Hello,

Long story short, I want to convert my Benchmark protocol into Tether. It is less than $150 worth of Benchmark on my Coinbase Wallet. I try to begin conversion and then it reads I need at least $268.00 of Ether to cover the network fee! I have just over $60 of Ethereum on coinbase wallet. I then tried using Uniswap but it won't commit to the transaction either. Do I seriously need this much Ethereum to cover a simple conversion??????? Surely I am doing something wrong. Please give feedback.

Terra and Abracadabra Team Up to Challenge Centralized Stablecoins - The Defiant

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 08:34 AM PDT

When miners try to find the next block, do they always include new transactions in the block if they have a high enough fee? Or do they sort of collect a bunch of transactions and then proceed to search for the block while neglecting new incoming transactions?

    Posted: 18 Oct 2021 05:54 AM PDT

So mathematically it does not make a difference for them right? They will always add whatever comes in if there is still space in the block and if the new transactions have a fee? My thinking was that they then would have to "start over" to find the right hash as adding new transactions will completely change the hash of the block. But that is incorrect, right? It does not really matter, as the probability of finding the block is as likely as before.

    Thanks in advance.
