    • 3months activation period, 90% hashrate threshold
    • if activated, schnorr enablement is 6mo after start
    • if not activated, try something else

the longer enablement delay after activation is interesting and reduces the risk from unupgraded nodes on services, miners, wallets, users and gives them time (a risk otherwise increased by short activation window)

while the short activation period avoids delays or perceived indecision resulting in a user-led UASF as SPDY8 is "fast enough", and if the unexpected were to happen and miners unreasonably delayed, then it should be easier to find consensus on a flag height activation from there. (actually not clear if BIP 8 or BIP 9, I think BIP 8 is considered an improvement due to use of block heights vs dates which created some subtle problem in the past).

+50K on a Sunday - HODL your Satoshis!

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 12:07 AM PST

Next week is gonna be wild.

We need to hodl the coins, not trade.

    • Stimulus is coming in.

    • Governments all over the world are printing money, usd, euro, bolivares, you name it.

    • Banks are recommending investors to get +1% of their assets in btc

    • From corporations to small businesses are moving some of their liquidity to btc.

    • We are still waiting for the big 4 big to make a move: Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook. These 4 can-not-afford-to-be-left-out and when they get in, that will be the real start of adoption.

We can not predict the market, they want your coins, they want you to FOMO a little bit and buy in, then the Whales will dump a bit to make you fear and sell your coins, and the big players will keep buying at discount.

There will be a time to sell and make profits, but we are not even close to the end of this bull run.

Another $1.9T stimulus incoming... The reason we choose Bitcoin is simple: because we prefer money that can’t be printed out of thin air. This is what the no-coiners refuse to acknowledge. They’re mad that we don’t want to play the same game anymore.

Invested my stimulus into crypto and I’m up - we’re in this bullshit together

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 11:13 PM PST

I don't know if I can offer much insight because I'm not the ideal Bitcoin success story, in fact not successful at all but here it goes. I'm from Canada and I'm at the lowest point in my life - I'm overweight, lost my job because of the pandemic and I'm living with my strict ass annoying immigrant parents until I find something to get me back on my feet. I've invested my stimulus checks into crypto because what the fuck do I have to lose? Nothing. I don't have a lot invested right now but I've made solid gains from the time it was valued at 36k USD. Feel free to call me a piece of shit after this, but I found a new passion and crypto is still in its early stages in terms of its potential. If you ever ask yourself 'is it too late to invest?' - the answer is hell no. Talk to the average joe, most are not invested. Bitcoin is STILL in its early stages. Investing only 1 dollar puts you ahead of most people. Hopefully I come back to this post a year from now in a better position.

Explaining Bitcoin to my 80 year old grandma

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 11:10 AM PST

While visiting my grandparents today we started talking about saving money and investing. I tried to avoid bringing up Bitcoin (as it would be hard to explain to a 80 and 82 year old) so I just told that I have a portion of my savings on an easy to access savings account and another portion is 'invested'. Then my grandpa went 'Well I just hope you don't fall for that Bitcoin scam, they have been sending me spam for a while now'. After telling them I actually did own some Bitcoin my grandma seemed interested and started asking questions on how it could not be a scam.

So in the most simple and easiest way I tried to explain to her how bitcoin works. I know she is a smart lady and that even at her age she can understand a lot of technical stuff (she has her own webshop) so I just went for it. Then in the middle of me explaining on how the blockchain works she interrupted me and said 'Well this all just reminds me a lot of the gold market'. Taken aback a bit I could just grin and say 'yeah.. that is actually a very good comparison'. Then after patting herself on her back calling herself a smart granny she just took over my whole explanation and just started talking about the benefits of a decentralized currency. I wasn't even finished explaining and she just tied the rest of the knots together herself! After she was finished she seemed visibly excited to have learned something new and just said 'Well now it all just makes complete sense, all I can say is that you are now at the right time in your life to be experimenting with something like this, and I'd rather have you buy some Bitcoins than to see you spend it all in a casino'.

My grandma has always been able to pull me back to earth and has been a voice of reason for me since I can remember. She usually ends up being right about basically anything she says, so to have her be so excited about Bitcoin truly means a lot for me and gives me a lot of extra confidence in Bitcoin itself.

My son (grade 2) will be presenting to his class about Bitcoin

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 03:18 PM PST

I thought this would be a good place for him to start his research. Not only am I teaching him about Bitcoin, I'm also showing him reference points, I hope this will be resourceful for him.

He is doing this through virtual learning and I will be helping with a kick ass presentation.

SO?! What can we advise him to present?

    I can taste the denial

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 11:24 PM PST

    Not investment advice.

I think what you are seeing right now is massive denial of what's going on with our economy.

The economy has been battered. Small businesses are failing. Americans now have "huge savings" after receiving thousands of dollars of stimulus and no bars/movie theaters/restaurants to spend it on. Mall bankruptcies are epic.

The federal reserve is pretending inflation doesn't exist, but if it does exist, they have ways to deal with it. Sure they do.

We are going to see the middle class nearly disappear in the next 10 years. Are you ready for what that looks like? But before then, are you ready for the "growth" aka stimulus fueled inflation. Are you ready for real inflation with suppressed interest rates? How about the infrastructure bill of $2 trill.

2nd nfl star just put bitcoin in their bio.

    Does money grow on trees?
Does it matter if bitcoin is the solution or only if people and companies believe it can be?

    2.5 million X $1400

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 01:29 AM PST

Just throwing this out there.. I might be way of the mark here so correct me if I'm wrong.

The BTC community on Reddit is around 2.5 million, if half of us received $1400 stimulus and pumped it into BTC that should equate to $1,750,000,000.

    Wouldn't that make us a whale ?

And.. if we continued to pump US dollars into BTC would that contribute in the depreciation of the US dollar ?

Not advocating that we should try to depreciate the US dollar.. just wondering.

    Thanks Guys/Girls and all else..

Using crypto currency volatility offset gains.

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 08:06 PM PST

    A food for thought.

Has anyone utilized cryptocurrency volatility to your advantage?

My understanding is that wash sale currently doesn't apply to crypto currencies.

As an example, let say you have a 10k short term gain from your stock investments, and you bought 1 btc when it was 58k which is now currently trading at 48k. You could sell your btc at 48k and repurchase right away. This would result in a 10k short term loss and your 1 btc cost basis would now be 48k (with an assumption that btc will eventually replace the gold market and become the world trading currency, so you don't really care about major corrections/crashes). It's a timing difference play, but you essentially gave yourself a 10k loss you can use to offset your gains from your stock investment by reducing your crypto basis. Therefore, you won't have to pay taxes on the 10k short term gain you triggered from the stock investments.

If you play the btc cyclical cycle right, you could legit build up your losses to use later in the future by sellimg and repurchasing instanteously whenever there are significant dips.

Until the IRS updates the tax code, you could legit legally play btc volatility to your advantage to not pay uncle Sam any taxes.

Bloomberg: GBTC discount could signal a bottom, BTC on track for 100K by the end of 2021, BTC replacing gold is happening

    Posted: 06 Mar 2021 04:44 AM PST

There has been a lot of recent discussion regarding GBTC trading at a discount.

While acknowledging that circumstances may be different now, this article notes that historically this may signal a bottom for BTC, meaning prices are heading up soon.

Bloomberg sees BTC marching towards $100k by the end of 2021, and notes that bitcoin is beginning to replace gold as an alternative investment.

Once it hits $100k, Bloomberg sees BTC becoming less volatile. It sees BTC becoming less volatile than Amazon's stock in 2022.

Links to "The Street" summary of the report, and the actual report itself (linked in the article), below.
