We are one of the only cryptocurrency communities that actually does this (I think dogecoin is number two) and uses crypto as currency. A tip outside a crypto community is worth 10x a tip within.

    Chaintip is online again!

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 06:00 PM PST

I made this post where I list the stuck tips I need to return to tippers. It looks like moving to a new wallet file makes everything work smoothly again so happy tipping. So it took only two hours instead of a few days after I had done the audit :)

I still need to return the stuck funds from the previous wallet after some people verify their addresses, but now have the mechanisms to do this without requiring the node.

I won't be around to check things keep working smoothly for the next 7 hours so let me know if anything doesn't work as you expect! It should be 'more responsive' now.

The maximalist idea that there will be one blockchain that does everything is as stupid as the idea that there will be one website that has all the information on it.

Heterogeneous interoperating blockchains are the future and no two blockchains are conceptually / philosophically better situated to interoperate than BCH and ETH.

Who's working on this? And what are the opinions of the Ethereum community?

If you are a twitch streamer and new to BCH, this is the experience as a streamer. No more waiting for your money, not paying a middleman, not giving twitch or youtube a percentage. It's like they handed you a 5 dollar bill through your screen. You could stop the screen and order a 5 dollar pizza.

While the Bitcoin Core developers have been talking about Schnorr signatures for years, Bitcoin Cash has already had them for years.

Bitcoin Cash was not the result of a failed takeover attempt. It was the result of a successful takeover attempt.

To all the new users, just know that Bitcoin Cash only uses 1/100th of the electricity that Bitcoin uses and can do 144 transactions a second instead of just 7.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:01 PM PST

It's technically true (until the price flips around) but even then per tx BCH will use a lot less electricity and if it is successful in its mission to be Peer to Peer digital cash for the world it will mean the end of many banks and big bank offices who use lots of electricity as well. So in the end, BCH will always be greener than BTC and when you start using BCH as money you are part of an idea, a revolution to bring more economic freedom to everybody in the world. When you invest in to BTC, you are just investing in to a big speculative bubble with almost no utility.

This does make a difference. See Satoshi knew he needed a real link with something that can not be made up out of thin air. Electricity can not be made up out of thin air and so Satoshi linked the abstract and virtual Bitcoin (numbers don't really exist, they are abstract concepts humans made up) with the flow of electrons, a real physical something that exists regardless if humans are around or not to observe it.

If you want to learn more about this idea, please watch John Nash his introduction on "ideal money" and his index, and his talk about linking the watt to this index and linking the value of reserve currencies to electricity.

Proof of stake is very cool but it does lead to a world were again those that have a lot will get more and those that don't have enough (to stake) will never ever be able to stake. Unlike proof of work were you could invent a new type of solar panel and a very efficient miner and start mining without needing a stake.

How to contribute to the bitcoin cash tech stack?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 11:41 PM PST

I am a developer and really new to the crypto currency side of things. I would love to contribute to the tech and learn more.

Can anyone help me out with it? I googled for the github and gitlab links, but not sure if they are the original/right ones as they don't seem to be active enough. Or am I missing something?

If any devs here, reading this, please let me know. Thanks!

    Chaintip Audit

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:50 PM PST

Hey all, I've found the time to write a few scripts to check the balances at the addresses that the node was failing to give the bot (not the nodes fault, probably me abusing it). Thanks to JT and fountainhead.cash for their services in carrying this out (https://insomnia.fountainhead.cash/). This is also the service I'm using for sharetip.me.

The list of funds, in satoshis, I owe tippers can be found here (expires in 1 week):

    reddit: https://pastebin.com/FgYNCrMU

    twitter: https://pastebin.com/k5ttBS4U

    github: only me {'testtip': 13500000}

    github issue tips: https://pastebin.com/mPzZf8vt

I'm still not 100% sure of the cause but I've been relying on "rpc.listunspent" from the node to return me a list of unspent outputs and that's been getting longer and longer maybe because of those suspicious looking possibly spam transactions that the node has trouble to send on.

About half of the stuck funds are because a tipper didn't link an address for chaintip to return their funds (they get a notification to do this when the funds need to be returned). Some are tips that haven't been claimed yet since taking the bot offline. The others are down to malfunctioning of the system.

My plan is to PM the tippers I owe the most up until some minimum threshold and ask them to check that their linked address is still accessible, then go through all the addresses and attempt to return the funds to the tippers linked address.

At the same time, I'm going to set the node up with a new wallet and do some testing to see if the issues go away when the unspent list is cleared. I've also doubled the specs on my VPS (thank you donators!) as running close to disk/memory/cpu capacity may have played some part in the failing tips.

Going forward, I'm going to use these scripts to make sure that any tips older than 1 week have either been returned or forwarded on. If any are found, I can look into the problem straight away. The whole point of chaintip is to have a little money sitting on the server as possible :) I should have probably had this second backup system from the start but building sharetip.me has certainly made this easier for me now.

Hopefully the bot is up and running again smoothly in a few days and apologies for the long downtime!
