Announcing the Bitcoin Core Usage Survey

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 12:56 PM PST

Today I'm launching the Bitcoin Core usage survey. This survey is aimed at gathering information about how people use Bitcoin Core so that we can improve it in the future. If you have any feedback about Bitcoin Core that you want to share, this survey is a great place to do that.

Click here to take the survey

As I know that many people are concerned about their privacy, this survey is designed to protect your privacy as much as possible. The survey is configured so that there are no trackers and no IP information is stored. Even so, if you want to use Tor, feel free to do so. I've tested that Tor doesn't break the survey (no annoying CAPTCHAs and no broken JS). Questions that ask for any information that could be identifying or privacy revealing are either optional or have an "opt out" type of answer.

For more information about the survey which breaks down why each question is being asked, see this blog post: https://achow101.com/2021/01/bitcoin-core-survey

Happy to join the Lightning Network!

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:27 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

I recently joined the Lightning network by creating my own node using a Raspberry Pi 4 and Umbrel! If anyone wants to connect with me or create a channel, here is my 1ML node:
    https://1ml.com/node/033323c3b00f142cff4fd2e20e125112d0c58ae4a3cc135f4e57512652050a4c05

I'm currently in the process of creating channels and testing that I can send sats from a mobile wallet (Phoenix) to my wallet + testing that I can use Zeus (any better mobile wallet on Android using Tor?) to connect to my node.

Bitcoin’s following the pattern of the last run up pretty closely. I wonder if that resemblance will continue

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 08:24 PM PST

    This Time its different /s

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 04:57 PM PST

I see more and more posts about how this bull run is completely different compared to the previous ones. I heard „this time its different" in 2013 and 2017. people where so euphoric seeing bitcoin go up and up that they thought they are the next warren buffet cause the price will go up and never go down. Then the drop happens and you can see posts saying bitcoin is their worst investment ever, how they lost all their money and crypto going to zero. This is when we enter the bear cycle. And this bull run is no different. We will hit a peak 100k? 150k? 200k? No one knows but it won't go up forever we WILL have another bear cycle and then the next bull cycle after the halving 2024.

Now I'm hearing a lot „but what about the institutional investors. They will change everything!!!". Yes it's big that let's say grayscale buys huge amounts of bitcoin but institutional investors are holding longterm! They know the price will be in the millions in 10 years, they don't care when the Price Hits 150k and then drops back to 40k, they will just buy more.

Don't underestimate retail investors. Institutional investors are building the base, the retail investors will push it to the peak because every grandmother will invest when the price hits 60, 80, 100k but they are also the biggest weakhands who will sell when the price starts dropping.

The safest approach is to buy and just hodl. Come back in 10 years and be a happy man/girl. But it's also not wrong to follow the cycles and selling on the way up when the price triples in one day at the peak and then buy more coins, when it's going down.

Just don't buy and expect to be a millionaire in a month. This will crush your dreams

    Rinse and repeat.

With Yellen parroting the same nonsense thats already been disproven, I cant wait for another country to absolutely take bitcoin by the horns and flourish.

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 11:30 AM PST

She's saying the same rubbish about bitcoin being used for terrorism and money laundering, despite chainalysis' report saying that in 2019, just 1.1% of transactions were being used for illegal activity: https://blog.chainalysis.com/reports/cryptocurrency-crime-2020-report

If countries like the US want to stifle innovation rather than embrace it, I cant wait for a sensible administration in another country to lap up bitcoin and flourish.

    Recommended exchanges with specific features

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 04:20 AM PST

Looking for an exchange that offers these specific features:

    1) the ability to place a trailing stop loss order that will execute if the price of the traded crypto falls a fixed percentage over a set period of time

    2) the ability to set a TOD Transfer On Death beneficiary

    Any recommendations?

I convinced my dad to not invest in what seemed like a BTC ponzi scheme about two years ago

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 08:04 PM PST

his friend invested and lo and behold now tried to withdraw after the price spike and is "having troubles withdrawing" being blocked and given excuses when he tries to withdraw.

fortunately I convinced my dad it seemed like a ponzi scheme, unfortunately he didn't listen to me and when i told him to just buy BTC.

anyone else know of people sucked into ponzi schemes when they could have just bought BTC instead?

    RIP

    Thank You to the Nerds!

    Posted: 19 Jan 2021 07:56 PM PST

you nerds are keeping us safu. The evil money printer makes it impossible to save. We were at the mercy of the central bankers. You nerds came along and saved us like the heros you are. Thank you to the Bitcoin Core dev team. You are all rich programers who ovbiously don't need money. You are helping 7 billion people on the planet get access to non-debased money. You are helping poverty enslaved people escape to freedom. This is no different than saving the slaves from the plantations. Finanical slavery is the new norm.

The current mandate of the federal reserve is full employment and full inflation target. Things will get more expensive and even with a job the avg person will never be able to afford them. The carrot will remain in from of wagie's face as he chases but can never reach. Save for a house? congrats you saved $25,000 for a downpayment too bad inflation makes it so you need $50,000 now. keep chasing that carrot until you are dead wagie. Seniors working past the age of 75, it truely never ends. Even the population is reaching its peak, its impossible to afford kids. Central bankers will cause extinction of the human race. The bitcoin core dev team is litterally saving the human race. thank you

Raspberry Pi 4 Node Block Sync

    Posted: 20 Jan 2021 03:29 AM PST

Anyone have any experience initial syncing the blockchain for their full node on a raspberry pi 4? It has been a week for me and progress is less than 0.5, not sure if this is normal or not. I am storing on a HDD connected via USB3.
