Bad time to get into GPU mining with ETH 2.0 and proof of stake?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 08:15 PM PST

I've been thinking of building a mining rig for a while now and I'm currently working on building new gaming PC so I figured it might be a good idea to turn my old PC into a mining rig. I did some basic profitability calculations and it seems like buying some fresh GPUs would break even after around 9 months of mining. It seems like mining ETH is the most profitable by a large margin and really the only coin worth my time but I'm worried that GPU mining will not be profitable after ETH 2.0 when it moves to a proof of stake model and my break even point will be extended by 3-4x. Is it a bad time to get into gpu mining?

4x5700(XT) - Different Brand Results (info in comments)

How much does card brand matter?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 11:00 PM PST

I'm looking at some GPUS and the price of 2 VisionTek 5700XT is around the same price as an 3 Asus 5600XT and have around the same hashing power. Simple profitability calculators tells me 2 5700 XT is better, because not only does it use less pci-e slots, but it has 8GB for longer lifespan. But I've never heard of VisionTek before, do lower quality brands drastically underperform (or spontaneously explode)? Would it be wiser to spend the same money on a higher quality brand card but slightly less performing card and more pcie slots?

How to mine with 50+ gpus? Or where?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 10:49 PM PST

Most houses cap at a few thousand watts, a 50+ setup can be 10,000watts+. How do some of you bigger fish go about finding a spot to mine? Can you still use your home and if so how? Or do you guys just go to a commercial area? Thanks

For everyone who is curious and asking. Melted Cable Issue

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 09:10 AM PST

The perif cable that powers the additional pcie ports has melted on my EVGA PSU.

The only thig this cable was used for is to power additional pcie slots for the mining rig.

Other than replacing the cable, are there other steps I should take to avoid a repeat?

    2u Rack Mining?

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 09:17 AM PST

Hey Everyone, I haven't actually done mining since I was in college. Couldn't justify electricity costs vs gains for the hardware I had at the time.

I'm now into my career, and my work provides me 2u of rackspace for free. I'd like to use it for mining, but most of what I'm able to find that's rack mountable is at least 4u.

Does anyone have good ideas/options for mining with 2u rack space? I do have a few r710s laying around that I could cannibalize the case for and just home brew something, but I'm also not opposed to buying a full unit either.
