Ledger Isolation vulnerability is much more dangerous than people might think

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 11:10 PM PDT

The recently revealed vulnerability in Ledger is much worse than people might think.

At least I could see on Ledger and Bitcoin subs, that people think, they are safe if they do not download some malware on their pc/laptop.

    But this is wrong.

The issue can be exploited also when you use only standard applications on your Ledger which are affected (BTC and its derivates)

The attack vector here is, if some tricks you to interface with the malicious web wallet with your Ledger. (so no you do not need to install anything to lose your coins)

    As an example:

    1. the attacker sends you a link for LTC web wallet (he says it is a new really great wallet and want you to try or whatever other reason)
    2. you think you are safe, after all, Ledger protects your private keys and everything has to be confirmed. So you connect and will try to send out some LTC to the attacker just as a donation or anything else.
    3. The web wallet sends spoofed transaction to your Ledger, so you think you are confirming LTC transfer, instead your BTC is sent out

There are many scenarios like this. You are affected anytime you interact with your Ledger and any web service. (not only if you use fake sw wallets)

I explicitly asked about it and this attack vector was confirmed by Ledger.

    Stay safe.

    Ledger App Isolation Bypass

Uncle Passed ~4 years ago and just found out he was big into bitcoin/mining

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 07:34 AM PDT

I've tried googling to figure this out but I'm not tech savvy enough to understand/grasp it, so not sure if this is even possible, here is my situation:

My uncle passed in 2016 after a very short battle with an aggressive brain cancer/tumor etc. The last year of his life was plagued with memory issues but he did talk a bit about bitcoin/mining etc, however in my head he was doing some type of folding at home to help cure diseases etc.

Two weeks ago my aunt sold her house and began the moving process, upon showing up to help and clear out her basement I came across a varitable treasure trove of old PC parts. I'd say its hoarding, however it is all in immaculate shape and stored. Along with notebooks and some other information, we found the following:

6 desktop computers with large cases and lots of extra hardware inside, after talking to a friend they believe these may all be mining rigs. In the basement we uncovered 6 boxes of HDDs and graphics cards, however all of the HDD's seem to be 2-4TB and may or may not be dead drives?

I purchased an external HDD reader to see if there was any family pictures etc, on there. It's mostly family pictures and videos he'd saved or converted, however because of the news around bitcoin, and the amount of hardware, I wonder if there is a wallet / bitcoin whatever floating around somewhere in one of these drives. Is there an easy way to locate if there is anything of value here?

Sorry for length, wanted to include as much as possible for best results. Can answer any other info.

ATM we have: 6 PCs with a ton of stuff crammed in them, stacks of HDDs, stacks of graphics cards and a buncha notebooks littered with numbers that are confusing. I don't think these #'s etc are bitchain/codes, but have now way to verify.

    I'm losing my head

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 04:53 PM PDT

Recently I decided to make my Bitcoin more secure. Then very quickly I noticed that letting my ledger hardware wallet create my seed might not be secure. So I decided to run an open source tool on my raspberry pi and use dice as entropy input. But then I need to trust the tool do with my entropy input as it is supposed to. I don't have knowledge to understand what the tool is doing so I can't verify. Which ultimately leads me to not being able to fully trust any software and therefore I can't create a seed that I feel good about and that lets me be sure that it has been created in a way that is secure and how it's meant to be.

I don't know how to end this cycle.

    YES! You read it right.

Based on our Fiat currency, the Brazilian Real, the Price of Bitcoin is almost reaching the ATH.

Right now, the price of 1 BTC is R$59,378, the ATH we reached is R$64,777

It's less the $1000 to us to reach, this means that if People HODL bitcoin back in the time they are almost getting the same price.

Of course, Fiat inflation is not good, and this show how BTC can be a store of value.

Ledger response to BTC derivatives exploit.

    Posted: 04 Aug 2020 09:01 AM PDT

TL;DR: They acknowledged the risk but chose not to fix it for usability.

It's worth mentioning that this was reported since Dec,2019, but they chose to ignore it. It turned out they ignored it because they don't want to fix it to keep them coins supported. They chose usability OVER Security. Fuck usability, I won't be using shit when I'm robbed.

    Platform Trade Bitcoin Privately

Hi you guys, I see a project rather cool about trading Bitcoin but privately, wonder if anyone here care about this?

Incognito App - I also apply to join the community in this project and wait for accept from admin haha =))

I see that Incognito have some rather function:

    1. They are mobile app (on IOS and Android) - I don't see web version, wonder if they have or intend to develop)
    2. It seem have a user friendly interface (actually I am not a technical guy, so others cryptos wallet somehow rather difficult for a new one to get accustom to
    3. Inside the app they have multiple function:

    - A wallet provide privacy for all our transaction (fee currently = 0)

    - A trading platform they call pDEX so that we can trade any cryptos and again, it's private

    - Invest function: by providing liquidity for the community to exchange cryptos and earn interest (I see currently PRV coin upto 37% annually - which is @@ really high, don't know when they make this lowers again, may be they are in lauching version)

    - Stake: they offer to run some NODE to power the privacy and earn crypto too (any one here have the NODE from Incognito and set up succesfully yet? DO you have any result from the NODE yet? I appreciate if you can share)

    1. I see they support quite a lot of coin (Bitcoin, Ethereum, ERC-20 Tokens, etc) => could be simple if we can manage all of cryptos in 1 place.

    https://incognito.org/

I have just install the app on my Iphone and make some demo transactions, it's quite fast but still the UI seem not really perfect yet, maybe they are still in development phases.

However, I like the privacy in this and want to share with those have the same concern too.

By the way, do you know any others app like this with more function and better, I do appreciate if you can share.
