Where should you trade your Bitcoins? Centralized or Decentralized crypto exchanges? once and for all.

Harvard's blockchain labs just published this clear and helpful article to solve the question once and for all:
    https://blogs.harvard.edu/blockchain/the-pros-and-cons-of-crypto-exchanges-platforms-explained/

one thing that bothered me in the article is the saying of CZ (head of Binance) "we're ok to do things very creatively to avoid unnecessary regulation" - that is almost criminal saying
    what do you guys think?

I'm the guy who "lost" ~4 BTC on Lightning Network

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 03:56 AM PST

    Hi All,

I'm the author of that post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/dlvokv/how_i_lost_4_btc_on_lightning_network/, and wanna give some important advises and explain what happened.

In the end, it was LND that saved my coins and most of them are already RECOVERED.

With huge support from the LND community those were the successful steps:
Step 1: coop-closed channels with funds on seed
Step 2: remote force-closed channels with perCommitPoint in channel.db
Step 3: remote force-closed chnnels where we have to ask peers for the perCommitPoint
Step 4: try with SCB again with remaining channels
Step 5: still open channels, try force-closing with old stat

    Advises:

    1. If you have a physical server always use UPS power supply to prevent power fails.
    2. If you wanna force-close channels, always do it manually, one-by-one when your node is FULLY SYNCED.
    3. Create SCBs (static channel backups) every time after opening a new channel and keep your 24 words seed.
    4. After pressing the "RETRUN" button, don't panic, WAIT and don't press Ctrl + C (like me) instantly after that.
    5. Inform yourself how that system works before sending higher amount of coins there.

    Regards,

How Bitwala can take your money away!

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 02:46 AM PST

"Bitwala is the first blockchain bank account. Get a fully licensed and regulated German current account with cryptocurrency trading features, a debit card, and a built-in Bitcoin wallet. We enable fast, intuitive cryptocurrency trading and the possibility to manage your cryptocurrencies and Euros in one place."

This is what Bitwalare declares but the reality is absolutely different. If you want to know how Bitwala can take away your money, keep them for weeks, make the live hard, and request tons of papers without any reason for this, continue reading below. Not interested - try yourself but be aware of the high risk and harm which so-called bitcoin-friendly "first blockchain bank account" can cause to you!

I registered Bitwala account more than 6 months ago and was glad to be able to deal with an officially licensed bank service that supports bitcoin. I started buying and accumulate some bitcoins there, although the rates are not so tasty but they are also not so bad. To me, it looked like a good price for keeping a part of my investments in a safe place.

Bitwala provides a page, called "Handle", to buy/sell bitcoins in realtime. So, whenever I needed it, I could buy or sell some. Up to the recently, when they started requesting mobile-pin. It's a good thing to have but only if it works as expected. When 4 of 5 SMS comes with a delay like 10 minutes, it means that you can't use the service. Sometimes, even can't log in! So, in the beginning, it was annoying. After the 3d lost opportunity to buy some coins by a very good price because all SMSs were delivered too(!) late, I informed the Support team about the issue. Moreover, I executed the transfer to move my (6K) money away. And you know what, they didn't reach the recipient, neither returned back!

On my request, Bitwala started sending me tons of questions about where I took this money from, how much I earn, why I'm buying Bitcoins, and how familiar I'm with the cryptocurrencies?! (wtf). In the reply, they claimed their bank partner, that those questions are required by it. I had to send my income confirmation, and answer crazy questions, and still, after 10 days, I'm struggling to get my money back!

Why I'm sharing this - to warn the community about the worst "blockchain bank account".

I keep the copies, emailing, etc. So, can prove every word.

P.S. a couple of other stupid questions, allowing for the fact that the mentioned transactions (buying/selling coins) were executed on Bitwala. Are you joking, Bitwala?!

    - Please provide supporting documentation regarding the transaction/s (e.g. invoices, contracts, agreements).

    - Please provide appropriate supporting documentation establishing the origin of the crypto assets of the below mentioned transaction/s (e.g. trading history, screenshots from exchange platforms, etc.).

Good year in crypto? Think about donating to charity.

    Posted: 02 Dec 2019 02:43 AM PST

    Hey reddit.

Bitcoin has had a much better year than 2018. Pretty sure a few of you have made some gains.

If you have been lucky please consider giving to charities this year. There are a lot that accept crypto.

2 years ago I donated 25 Bitcoin to charities, around 20 that accepted crypto. You can find a list of them here https://old.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/7o772y/im_donating_25_bitcoin_to_good_causes_update/

A few days later /u/PineappleFund came in and donated 5057 Bitcoin to charity!! https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/7jj0oa/im_donating_5057_btc_to_charitable_causes/

I am not in the position to donate this year unfortunately but I've not seen a thread started like this yet so just wanted to get people thinking about giving to charity.

    Have a good holiday.

PSA (important terminology): when we say we pay "with lightning" or "in lightning" instead of "with Bitcoin via / on lightning" we do ourselves a big disservice as everybody not as knowledgeable as us thinks we are using another currency, not Bitcoin.

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 04:06 AM PST

I came to realize this problem now over the last few months taking payments via the LN at our bar ROOM77 in Berlin. The amount of people from outside of the community who have by now asked me what the new lightning currency is all about is staggering and we even had staff members who took LN payments for quite a while without having understood that they are actually accepting Bitcoin.

Accordingly we have aksed our staff not to ask our customers "do you want to pay with Bitcoin or with Lightning?" and instead offer the choice of "Bitcoin onchain or via the Lightning Network?".

I think by not using the right wording we are creating unneccessary confusion amongst all the bystanders and noobs and at the same time playing into the hands of the people selling fake bitcoins and claiming that bitcoins on the LN are not actually bitcoins.

Thanks for considering this wording suggestion or using your own as long as it avoids the confusion desribed above!

What is a good flow to actually spend/use Bitcoin in everyday life?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2019 11:33 AM PST

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on best way to take profits from Bitcoin and transfer it into a currency so I can pay bills and buy things?

Currently I have been transferring to Coinbase and then my bank, or using Bitpay to spend directly, but I feel like there is a better way to handle it.

    Any suggestions would be awesome!
