AMA Bitcoin Mining / Stratum V2 — We are Braiins, the company behind Slush Pool and Stratum V2. We’re joined by Matt Corallo and Peter Todd. Ask us anything!

Hi r/Bitcoin! We are Jan Capek (u/janbraiins) and Pavel Moravec (u/p-m-o), co-founders of Braiins (the company behind Slush Pool & Braiins OS). We recently published the specification for Stratum V2 — a new mining protocol that improves the decentralization, security, and efficiency of Bitcoin mining.

We know the biggest issues miners and mining pools face based on our years of experience operating Slush Pool, and this protocol addresses those problems. You can find the documentation at stratumprotocol.org.

Matt Corallo (u/TheBlueMatt) will also participate in the AMA. He joined us in Prague last September to hash out the details of the spec and his idea of allowing miners to select their own work in BetterHash is also implemented in Stratum V2. Peter Todd (u/petertodd) also joined the V2 team with his security expertise and will participate in this AMA.

Ask us anything! We'll try to begin answering questions on Thursday around 4pm CET (10am EST).

P.S. The V2 technical specification is currently available to the public for comments and general feedback.

A reminder that Bitcoin was invented to make the transactions they don't want you to make. Everyone used to be on the same page about that, but now we act as if it's a get-rich-quick-scheme.

I'm not sure if this belongs here or if I am even allowed to post but here you go. You have to be pretty dumb not to catch this scam but it's definitely a poor clone.

What’s the most realistic price of 1 BTC?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 07:46 PM PST

I could never imagine it being 1 million dollars for one bitcoin. But in the flip side, I can't see it being $1 either. I feel like 50K is also too much but it's in the realm of possibility for at least a short while. What's your thoughts?

Mail from Mt.Gox and difficulty to understand. Please help :)

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:02 AM PST

    Hey Guys,

I lost some BTC in Mt.Gox a while back and after a few postcards from HK over the years I now got a mail:

The records indicate that you lost 5.6332805600000002 BTC when Mt Gox was hacked. We have been purchasing claims from Mt Gox customers such as you. Based on our review, we would be willing to buy your claim for $5,070. We can make payment within 2-3 days after the transfer is confirmed.

Now my question as I am european and am not really sure. Do they mean 5$ or do they mean 5000$?

    Thanks in advance?

Would it be possible to broadcast a Transaction spending a P2SH Output whose RedeemScript is non-standard, or will the Transaction be rejected as non-standard by nodes running default settings?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 09:29 PM PST

Say for example I wanted to use a Phrase or some sort of math puzzle as the redeem script for a P2SH address. Making the output would be straight forward, as it would look like any other P2SH address. But I'm worried that when it comes time to Spend this output, it would be rejected by nodes as non-standard and I'd have to reach out to a miner to have them manually include it in a block.

Has anyone had success with spending non-standard P2SH outputs before? Should I not be concerned? I'd test with a small amount first just to see but even then I don't want to clutter the Chainstate with unnecessary UTXOs if it's unspendable.

I've sent a Bitcoin full node to Antarctica

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 05:20 AM PST

I saw a post here a while ago where someone in the south of New Zealand pointed out they were running the world's southernmost Bitcoin full node. Recently a friend went to work in Antarctica for 3 months and needed a small laptop.

So I set up a synced full node for him which he will be attempting to get online soon (there is connectivity at the station he is at). I know it's a long shot given the bandwidth requirements (he will need to download the few days of blocks that he has not been online while in transit).

Also, does anyone know if I can somehow get the node to show on a node map given that he will most likely not be able to allow inbound connection to port 8333? I suspect that even if the node connects it may be hard to prove its location.

Also, has this been done before? I could not find evidence of it.

Small chance it works, it will be fun!
