Monthly Skeptics Discussion - September 2019

    Posted: 31 Aug 2019 05:16 PM PDT

Welcome to the Monthly Skeptics Discussion thread. The goal of this thread is to promote critical discussion by challenging popular or conventional beliefs.

This thread is scheduled to be reposted on the 1st of every month. Due to the 2 post sticky limit, this thread will not be permanently stickied like the Daily Discussion thread. It will often be taken down to make room for important announcements or news.

    Rules:

    • All sub rules apply here.
    • Discussion topics must be on topic, i.e. only related to skeptical or critical discussion about cryptocurrency. Markets or financial advice discussion, will most likely be removed and is better suited for the daily thread.
    • Promotional top-level comments will be removed. For example, giving the current composition of your portfolio or stating you sold X coin for Y coin(shilling), will promptly be removed.
    • Karma and age requirements are in full effect and may be increased if necessary.

    Guidelines:

    • * Share any uncertainties, shortcomings, concerns, etc you have about crypto related projects.
    • Refer topics such as price, gossip, events, etc to the Daily Discussion.
    • Please report top-level promotional comments and/or shilling.

    Resources and Tools:

    • Read through the CryptoWikis Library for material to discuss and consider contributing to it if you're interested. r/CryptoWikis is the home subreddit for the CryptoWikis project. Its goal is to give an equal voice to supporting and opposing opinions on all crypto related projects. You can also try reading through the Critical Discussion search listing.
    • Consider changing your comment sorting around to find more critical discussion. Sorting by controversial might be a good choice.
    • Click the RES subscribe button below if you would like to be notified when comments are posted.

Backup all wallets before android 10 upgrade

    Posted: 08 Sep 2019 11:10 PM PDT

Just upgraded to Android 10, and it looks like the encryption key store or whatever it's called is reset during the upgrade. This causes your phone to lose access to all the locally stored wallet files and such. So make sure you have all your seeds and private keys backed up before you upgrade.

It’s time for a discussion of what is allowed here!!

    Posted: 08 Sep 2019 02:17 PM PDT

This sub used to be a good way to keep up with the latest and greatest in the crypto space. It introduced me to a lot of coins/tokens. Some good, some not. But at least it opened the door for me to look into the project and make my own decision.

Now you get downvoted and called a shill or a bag holder for even mentioning anything outside the top two.

So what is r/CryptoCurrency now? Meme's only? Is there a rule that I somehow overlooked about posting for the average person? Do I have to be an elitist crypto guru?

It's insane the lack of courtesy and respect for others opinions. It's ok to disagree, but at least be constructive when voicing an opposed opinion.

So what am I missing? Is there a sub that still has reasonable discussion about potential projects and allows for dialogue without the stupid "it's a shill" crap?

Opinions on Exodus Wallet, Anycoin Direct and Coinbase?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2019 03:07 AM PDT

I'm JUST starting off with crypto. I intend to start off really small (€10 - €20 - money that I wouldn't really miss) and see how it goes. A colleague recommended Exodus wallet but I've come across posts that highlight some problems with it (e.g. it isn't open source or peer reviewed apparently?). There seem to be a LOT of different wallets out there and I'm a bit overwhelmed with the choice. I get the impression that Hardware Wallets are the most recommended and the safest and while I will likely get a hardware wallet at some point in the next few years (the plan is to buy it with whatever money I make off of trading crypto, if I ever make any money at all) for now, I'd liket to start with as little upfront costs as possible. Is Exodus all right or would you recommend something else? Is it possible to have something that you can use both on the PC as well as on mobile? I don't know if there's something that can sync data between the two devices...

Other than that, I intend to use anycoidirect.eu and Coinbase (again, recommendations from a colleague). So far I don't seem to have seen very negative opinions about the two so I guess they're okay? Do you guys have a specific preference? If so, why? Is it okay to use both or should I really just stick with one? I intend to (eventually) invest in and trade multiple currencies.

TaChain scam revealed - Former team member still working on XtraBytes

Maybe only a few of you ever heard of TaChain, but if you did, be sure it was a scam. After the reveal of the scam, the project disappeared and everyone is gone.

    https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5147318.msg52399936#msg52399936

Most suspiciously, a former member of the TaChain team is still working officially for XtraBytes, another windy project.

Here you see the website of TaChain, scrolling down to team reveals the "social media specialist" Marcus:

If we now go to the XtraBytes team website, we will find him there as well, working as a manager of moderation:

Diving deeper gives another result, he was part of another project, where he was removed meanwhile:

I’m 17 and was wondering what the best way to legally buy crypto is.

    Posted: 09 Sep 2019 04:12 AM PDT

I am interested in experimenting with programs such as Cryptohopper but since I am under the age of 18 I lack the ability to purchase crypto through platforms such as binance. What would be the best/most secure way to go about purchasing some crypto that I could link up with my Cryptohopper account. I have my own debit card.

Etherparty/Vanbex - Banned from Telegram a legit question as to whether or not they used investor funds to buy personal property/assets.

Substratum - Banned on Reddit/Telegram for asking semi-trolling questions about Justin Tabb and use of investor funds.

Verge - Banned from Reddit for calling them delusional when they were speculating a partnership (later confirm to be with Pornbub) was with Amazon.
