Crypto Reddit Manipulation Report: Dream Network

    Posted: 09 Sep 2019 06:05 AM PDT

    Hello r/CryptoCurrency,

Today I would like to share with you the results of a manipulation investigation that was recently completed on r/CryptoCurrency and r/CryptoMarkets. Most of the time investigations are handled behind the scenes so the offenders do not learn our tools and methods, and evade them. However, in certain cases like this one I believe it is good to show people what to look out for and the scale of anti-manipulation work we deal with.

    Background

SmarterEveryDay did a good series about manipulation on social media. There are videos for YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter. Reddit was not included but it does face very similar challenges as outlined by the admins here. Most people are well aware of the politically motivated manipulation and there is no shortage of /r/HailCorporate members skeptical of any possible promotional posts on the site. Along the same lines, it's not hard to see the profit motive and value present in manipulating crypto stats, sentiment, and discussion. As you can imagine, this is a lot of work that crypto mods do.

    Dream Network

The offenders in this case are a network of 50 accounts that I'm calling the Dream Network. The particular types of manipulation they engage in are Astroturfing and Vote Manipulation.

Some of the most intense astroturfing can be found in the threads listed below

Note how this network of accounts comprises most or all of the comments in each post. They will ask each other questions and build out comment chains meant to look organic. If you click on Other Discussions or into their history you will see them doing the same things on various crypto subreddits. Accounts from the Dream network shill all the same projects or companies including Dreamr, Bitmax, Moozicore, Bora, Contentos (COS), Ultra Token, MOAC, STP, COVA, Ontology, Duo, Persona, and OOOBTC. While this is not smoking gun evidence that these projects solicited the Dream network's shilling services, I would not say I have ever seen a legitimate project wrapped up in astroturfing at this level.

If you click into their post history, you will see some of the common signs of inorganic accounts. Some other behaviors and indicators associated with these types of accounts I would like to add:

    • Karma farming to bypass our karma requirements by either begging in /r/freekarma4u or posting agreeable content like "cute cat" in r/aww or "fookin kneelers" in /r/freefolk
    • Posting in other crypto subs with little to no moderation
    • Zombie accounts: The post history shows a complete change in behavior at a certain point, usually associated with a long gap in posts. This change is typically when the account is sold and begins full time shilling
    • Posting in old threads where they won't be downvoted
    • Thanks to /u/shimmyjimmy97 's bot Instamod, their flair on CC, CM, and CT is listed as New to Crypto or Bronze (the lowest rank), indicating something is sketchy, especially when the thread is full of users with these flairs. Instamod works by analyzing the crypto subreddit specific karma so their karma farming in r/aww doesn't fool it

Have a look through these accounts before the admins shadowban them. What other red flags stand out to you?

To moderators of other subreddits, if you would like help easily banning this amount of users with a bot or collaborating with the r/CryptoCurrency mod team to fight manipulation and spam, please reach out to me

Scammer Alert: @Benedictseamus "0 cost mining, 100% ROI, just give me all your details"

    Posted: 09 Sep 2019 12:48 PM PDT

    User: /user/Benedictseamus

I got a message from this user saying:

    Hello there

I had a quick look at their profile, they seemed new. Perhaps needing help or a question about something that I had posted so I clicked accept and replied with:

    sup

    https://imgur.com/8Q57Vf9

They then asked how I was, very polite as it were. I did not have time for long convo as I was busy so I just asked if I could help. This is when I knew the scam was about to start. They told me they were a I'm a stock broker and a bitcoin miner and they wanted to talk to me about it. Me, little old me. Well I was honoured. I replied truthfully. I know of it but I am no means an expert.

    https://imgur.com/VNkDArr

They told me that there was no cost, but very good return of investment. "No cost at all , with this mining scheme you get 100% ROI and lots of bonuses". Well my penis was positively throbbing at this. 100% return, 0 cost. This was it, I finally made it.

Quick, sign me up what can I do....

It's simple, just create a new wallet and then the "mining hardware" will do the rest for me. I said I would create a wallet but they told me no, it has to be created on this specific website: blockchain.info

    https://imgur.com/S60bBoh

All they needed was my wallet ID and my temporary password.

The reason why we ask you to create with a temporary password is because it's an international connection , you not here with me and I'm not there with you, so we derived a means which we can be able to connect those who are not of closed distance. So when you get channeled to the miner you will then have to change your password to the permanent one after connection is done

    https://imgur.com/EX37QD1

Now, all he needs is my details. Well, I was just texting my friend James, and James is a nice name. So tonight Matthew I will be: James... er.... Montgomery. And I googled nice places in England and got somewhere called Edale. That will do, sounds posh.

I also wanted them to know I was serious. I had 33BTC I would put into this. I wanted to get 100% returns on that. This was it. When lambo?

    https://imgur.com/79j7Tyl

I then gave him my authenticator details and password:

    https://imgur.com/d9NbZ3y

I did get a log in request to authorise in my inbox:

    https://imgur.com/nqqr9Gv

There were some issues but I asked if he was expert (my confidence was waning):

    https://imgur.com/mYwFi8s https://imgur.com/CNlSny2

After some tinkering around they got my account set up. I was then advised to change my password.

Wow, The really care about my security. I changed the password and then that was that. All I need to do deposit BTC into my newly secure account and then 100%.

Except its not. Two things probably happened here:

    • 1) They made a copy of my backup phrase meaning they can access my account at any time.

    • 2) The stored my details in an app that uses the API. This way they can instantly check the account for a deposit and then remove it straight away.

    https://imgur.com/fzX5KSM

I decided to try my luck. Can I get them to give me some bitcoin? My aim here is 1 get something from them and 2 get their address so I can report it.

    https://imgur.com/EBLtjoB

I clearly am no clever persuader and I clearly am not getting anything from them so I just thought I would leave them waiting with excitement whilst I write this blog post up:

    https://imgur.com/tp3ec3E

I can't believe these scams still happen, do people still fall for this?

NEVER GIVE OUT ACCOUNT DETAILS OR SEEDS/WALLET IDS TO ANYONE

Trading between CryptoCurrencies and Withdrawing the funds

    Posted: 10 Sep 2019 01:40 AM PDT

Hey guys, I just started learning about trading, doing TA and just learning as much as I can. This may be a very strange question, but how do you guys withdraw your funds you've earned through trading? When trading from fiat to crypto like BTC/EUR, it's pretty straightforward, buy BTC with fiat currency and sell it for higher price. But do you then earn BTC or EUR to the acoount? What about when you trade between currencies, like LTC/BTC and you'd like to withdraw fu ds to your credit card? Should you do it only while coin has high value? What about if you'd like to spend some of that money you've earned through trading and you need to trade it for fiat? Many question, I hope anyone can help me. Thanks guys!
