Using Ripple to exchange currency, is that a proper use case?

I have a Canadian bank account and a US bank account. It's expensive to transfer all of the money from my Canadian bank to US bank and vice versa. Would Ripple be an effective way to do this cheaply? Say I purchase 500 CAD worth of Ripple then sell it for USD at what I would hope to be the current exchange rate (.75) or close enough?
