Ethereum Essence: Complex Consensus Operations (if we're still talking about what Ethereum could be..)

    Posted: 04 May 2019 05:47 AM PDT

I am working on a PoC for a general protocol for consensus on top of Ethereum, based on my dType proposal. These are my observations now: https://medium.com/@loredana.cirstea/ethereum-essence-complex-consensus-operations-9d63d419950b

    Also:

People have been discussing what Ethereum is, in the context of the recent ethereum.org content, design, etc. changes. Specifically, the "world computer" vs. "programmable money" / "defi" etc.

From what I understand, the views actually are:

    - what can Ethereum become (the visionaries)

    - what Ethereum is now (the pragmatics)

For me, it was the "World Computer" promise that mesmerized me. I would not have entered the space without it. This is what still keeps me around.

This being said, Ethereum began as a combination of the two views. If you ask me, this is why it had success. I think it would cripple Ethereum if people would get rid of either one. Let people dream, because this is where the big ideas come from. Let people be practical, earn a living.

What I am saying is: there is enough space on ethereum.org for both views.

I have a couple of questions about side-chains and state channels. Would anyone be able to answer?

    Posted: 04 May 2019 01:10 PM PDT

Hi. I'm currently looking into Ethereum's layer-2 scaling solutions and I have some questions if anyone is able to answer (or point me in the right direction to read up on all this).

Also, I don't know if there is any better way for me to probe for info like this without creating a new thread each time. If you guys have any places I could go to drop such questions that is more appropriate, please let me know. I've been doing what I can with Google, but I was struggling to find answers to these specific questions.

    Side-chains (Plasma)

My understanding of side-chains (Plasma is the implementation I read about) is that they are:

    • Trustless, non-custodial
    • Use fraud proofs to maintain trust
    • Only trust assumption is that the main chain block producers are trustworthy
    • Not necessarily more efficient than main chain transactions

My question about side-chains is how they improve scalability if they are not more efficient and still suffer the overhead of a blockchain? Is it because they run parallel to the main chain, or maybe because the chain is not as large so overhead is reduced?

    State channels

My grasp on state channels definitely feels weaker than side-chains. These are my notes:

    • Direct, off-chain tx channels between parties, can contain arbitrary # of tx
    • Low computational overhead compared to on-chain/side-chain, near instantaneous
    • Uses unanimous signatures from all participants in a channel to maintain consensus on the state
    • Upon closure, final balances are settled on-chain in a single set of tx
    • Disputes are resolved by reporting to main chain

I have a few questions about this:

    • How does reporting to the main chain help resolve disputes? Does it just default to the most recently accepted state?
    • How would off-chain computations performed in state channels be verified as trustworthy? Is it solely on the basis of unanimous approval?

I've always been quite surface-level in regards to my knowledge of crypto, but I'm looking to get an intimate understanding of Ethereum and the most important tech being built on it. If any of you could point me in the right direction for a good starting point or resource to dig through, I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks in advance!

Looking for feedback on my Paypal Dapp.

    Posted: 04 May 2019 04:55 AM PDT

Hello, I've built ERCPay. It's Paypal built on the Ethereum blockchain and allows users to transact in Ether (and stablecoins in the future) with escrow protection.

The Dapp enables users to transact in Ether for online transactions with a peace of mind. Funds are held in the smart contract till the buyer approves fund release; sellers can never take payment and fail to deliver the product.

In case of disputes, ERCPay will step in as mediator and if needed, release funds to seller or refund to buyer.

The Dapp is being tested on the Ropsten testnet. Would appreciate your feedback whether it's good or bad, on the UI/UX, functionality, and how easy/difficult is it to send, receive and withdraw payments on the platform.

    Open source smart contract: https://ropsten.etherscan.io/address/0xa4f1032d9b1485b9384f7061d95c732edb9c1527

Edit: Please give sending payments a try! It takes less than a minute.

What is the value of ETH over a second-layer smart contract solution for Bitcoin?

    Posted: 04 May 2019 10:13 AM PDT

Hey. This is a question I've had for a while. I'm currently sitting on a stack of BTC, but I am not a fan of the community over on /r/bitcoin - and this has pushed me to look at other options.

Assuming that BTC or BCH overcome the scaling issues and are able to sustain a huge network, what is the value of ETH and its in-built smart contracts over a turing-complete second-layer smart contract system for BTC/BCH?

It seems that ETH is already expected to utilise second-layer solutions to be able to function at scale, so is there any reason a smart contract system built on top of BTC/BCH couldn't achieve a similar/preferable outcome?

    Cheers :)

    Can't Ethereum Solve This?

    Posted: 04 May 2019 11:02 AM PDT

Yesterday I went to Tim Hortons and I just couldn't help but notice how archaic our modern currency and reward systems are.

First I hand the employee my Tim's Reward card, she swipes it and everything's good. Six out of seven, she says' my next is free!

So then I go to tap my debit card and their machine is only accepting it in insert mode due to technical issues at the moment . We insert it in and nothing happens. We had to blow on the machine, and give my card some magic rubs I guess. After a few tries it started working.

Today I go back go Timmies to claim my fresh batch of FREE delicious brew! Except when I got to the window I had lost my rewards card... I had to get a new Tim's rewards card and start back at zero of seven. On top of that their machine was still down and I had to redo the entire magical process all over again.

We already have private keys attached to each and every single one of us - our social security.

Why can't we upgrade to a more appropriate modern private key like ethereum that can not only store my Tim's Rewards but my phsycal wallet full of all my other 'tokens' and currency?

I've lost so many rewards cards, gift cards and not to mention cash. It's hard to believe we're sending rockets to space and landing them back on earth yet this problem still exists in modern society.

Ethereum 2.0 phase 0 launch date

    Posted: 04 May 2019 10:36 AM PDT

    Messari:

In a bi-weekly Ethereum ($ETH) developer call, Ethereum Foundation's Justin Drake said the launch of Phase Zero of ETH 2.0 is on track for a June 30th launch.

    Source: https://messari.io/article/code-for-ethereum-s-proof-of-stake-blockchain-to-be-finalized-next-month

The article is based on a Coindesk article:

In a bi-weekly call between ethereum developers, Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake said that code specifications for the first phase of ethereum's transition to a proof-of-stake network were "on track" to be finalized by June 30.

    Source: https://www.coindesk.com/code-for-ethereums-proof-of-stake-blockchain-to-be-finalized-next-month

Am I correct in assuming that Phase 0 will not be launched on June 30th (unlike Messari's article suggests), but that June 30th is just a deadline after which there won't be any more major code changes accepted (as stated in Coindesk's article)? Meaning the launch of Phase 0 is still expected to be at the end of 2019.

Why vitalik does not limit ETH amount

    Posted: 04 May 2019 07:19 AM PDT

one of BTC hodler told me: ETH is gas, It does not store value, ETH has no protection of inflation due to unlimited supply (unlike BTC which is limited)

    So why is that?
