    The depth chart is a critical component of my trading strategy because it allows me to quickly scan the markets, shows me what coins are being actively manipulated, and gives me valuable information on short term market sentiment. If following someone else's signals isn't working out, learn about the depth chart below and take your first steps to learning how to trade with them.

    At its most basic, the depth chart is a visual representation of the open buy and sell orders on the order book. Buy orders are stacked on the left, sell orders on the right. These orders are placed as "limit" or "maker" orders, meaning that these individuals are essentially advertising that they are willing to transact at that price, and are waiting for a "taker" or "market" order to take them up on it.     Much like how past price movements draw patterns that seem to repeat themselves on the candlestick chart, the shape of the depth chart creates recognizable patterns and the way that it changes over time provides a window into future price action.

    ​

    While the depth chart is a beautiful tool, it has limitations. It costs nothing (except the risk of an exchange confiscating funds due to illegal behavior) to place giant orders that are never intended to be filled, or create a picture that drives a specific narrative.     While it's unfortunate that markets are sometimes manipulated, it is possible to reduce that risk by focusing on markets that regularly have high volume and hefty order books. These criteria make manipulation more expensive and more difficult, and therefore less likely.

    After studying the depth chart patterns, and observing coins in real time, you become in-tune with how the market sentiment, and consequently price, sloshes back and forth. This opens up the opportunity to make trades in short time frames with reasonable probabilities of success and advantageous risk:reward ratios.
