The Keep Random Beacon - true source of randomness on Ethereum and beyond

    Posted: 19 Apr 2019 09:21 AM PDT

The Keep Random Beacon is a foundational, stand-alone component of the Keep Network privacy protocol. It provides a proven, decentralized source of randomness and we will be launching it on Ethereum mainnet this year.

In this new post within our Random Beacon series, we'll explore its mechanism, how dApps can benefit from it and why we've chosen to build the Keep Random Beacon on threshold relay technology.

We keep exploring a wide range of its use cases and possibilities - for Keep Network and beyond.

If you are an organization, project or a dApp developer interested in building with the Keep Random Beacon or the broader Keep Network, be sure to get in touch to discuss ways we could collaborate.

    Node counts on etherscan

    Node counts on etherscan

Can anyone offer insight into why the node tracker on Etherscan.io is showing a steep drop in nodes over the past week (with, at present, a 54% drop in just the last 24 hours)? Is this an issue with how etherscan tracks nodes (i.e., methodology - note that ethernodes is showing thousands more than etherscan does), software update problems, or an accurate indication of a trend/problem with node deployment?

I'm not interested in kicking off a centralization debate (though that's always fun, and some quick digging suggests that the overall number of nodes has been dropping steadily for some time now anyway); I'm just trying to understand how reliable this kind of chart (and its underlying data) is. Does anyone have insight? Are there other node trackers I can look at?

    Rocket Pool Massively Overlooked

    Posted: 18 Apr 2019 11:15 PM PDT

Rocket Pool is a decentralised staking network. It's been in development since around 2016. It seems not many people are aware of it. But everyone may potentially use it in the future.

It will allow you to sake with as low as 16 ETH. Lower than running your own node privately.

If you run a node Rocket pool will give you an increased return, by charging other users.

If you don't know how to run a node, rocket pool will be easy to use.

They are going to be as decentralised as possible. Reducing risk.

Their second beta is coming soon.

    Vitalik is following the project.

Their reddit only has less than 200 people on it. Go check it out and support their next beta!

Taxes on the blockchain before taxing cryptocurrency?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2019 05:47 PM PDT

Would like everyone's opinion as to whether there should be a movement to anonymise your cryptocurrency trail through monero and DEX if the governments of your country refuse to put taxes obtained from cryptocurrency on the blockchain so that we can transparently follow the supply chain of goods and services the taxes are used for.

In my opinion, if the taxes are coming from cryptocurrency using blockchain tech, what the tax is used for should also be transparent on the blockchain.

So if your country puts the tax obtained from cryptocurrency gains on the blockchain, pay your taxes. If not, anonymise it as much as possible to break the trail. They don't deserve the taxes if they do not contribute back to us cryptocurrency tax payers. The movement should also focus on making tax spending more transparent eventually leading to us taxpayers being able to choose where our taxes go to.

Edit: are Zk-snarks already implemented into Ethereum?

Could an ERC20 token be used to incentivize indexing of the internet?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2019 05:24 PM PDT

Posted a similar thread on BTC forum yesterday

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/besg5r/why_couldnt_proof_of_work_be_tied_to_indexing_the/

after sleeping on it am thinking this might be a job for ETH.

The internet has become the library of the world, the problem is that the indexing of this information is done by closed source centralized corporate entities whose primary concern is generation of revenue for shareholders, while one must trust that the indexing done by such companies is accurate. There is also a high barrier to entry as it is cost prohibitive to generate and maintain a large index, leaving a few to primarily one gatekeeper(s) in charge of this vast repository of knowledge. An open sourced index of the internet through incentivized distributed indexing of the internet could be of great public utility.

My education is as an MD not an engineer or programmer so this is just to try and get a ball rolling on discussion and apologize in advance if there are serious gopher holes with proposed methodology.

Consider an ERC 20 token let's call it IndexCoin. Issuance of IndexCoin would be tied to indexing of the internet. So say if 10,000 pages were indexed in the past 24 hours one would receive one IndexCoin for indexing ten pages, if 10 million indexed in the past 24 hours a coin for indexing 10,000 pages. 80% of issuance to miners 20% to maintain servers where the indexed database would live. This database would be freely available to all and anyone could attach an opensource search engine to it or download it in its entirety to place on a server farm that might scale.

The thorny problem as I see it is, espescially as you have an open source index already created, how do you know that someone has actually indexed as opposed to just copying a portion of the already created database and submitting that as new work for a coin? The solution I have, very rough, is 1) after the requisite pages have been indexed a cryptographic key is issued to allow for coin distribution 2) something to do with timestamps, I don't know encrypt timestamps from the webcrawler(if there are any) when it submits new data. I realize that probably doesn't solve the problem as some yahoo could just copy the index content attach new timestamps and resubmit, maybe the webcrawler could generate encrypted timestamps as it worked, still how would one know the timestamps were evidence of work and not attached to plagarized material. Don't know if this is a trivial problem or a near intractable one, may be a bit above my paygrade. However to all you programmers, cryptographers, computer nerds, hackers, Boffins, Bolgers, Hornblowers and Proudfeet might be worth taking a little while to consider whether one can use an ERC20 token to securely incentivize indexing of the internet in a distributed fashion? AFAIK no one is working on this.
