    Happy Birthday, bitcoin, a little delayed :3

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 12:59 AM PST

    In human years, bitcoin is still a little boy.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2019 11:24 PM PST

    I grew up with computers. I got my first AppleIIe in the mid 80's and used a 2400 baud modem to connect to BBS services and download pirated games when I was maybe 12. Then one day I got a dial-up connection to Earthlink. Eventually broadband. Then smartphones. In a way, I watched personal computing and the internet grow up as I grew up. I'm now a professional software engineer in my 40s and the Internet and computing is a big grown-up operation.

    Bitcoin just turned 10 years old. Right now he can't do much. Can't drive a car, can't juggle, can't play a musical instrument, can't write a software program. But, he's pretty smart, and he's growing up every day.

    What will Bitcoin be able to do when he's a teen? 2nd layer scaling, privacy, identity, all kinds of things. In fact he's learning about a lot of them now. And when he's 20? 10 years from now? Well now he's an adult, likely playing in the adult games with sovereign nations and fiat currencies.

    Beyond that? Who knows. When Bitcoin is in it's 40's, it's going to be a fully grown up Man. Probably running shit. It will be fascinating to watch!

    Happy Birthday Bitcoin, we love you. And thanks!

    How long needs a raspberry pi3+ to sync from 0 to full? I know because I did: Its 19 Days

    Posted: 04 Jan 2019 03:32 AM PST

    So I got a Raspberry pi 3+ and a Samsung MU-PA500B SSD, installed a headless raspbian and bitcoin core and let it run on Dec 16 and today it finally finished syncing :)

    My internet connection is a 100Mbit down / 20Mbit up cable line and this bitcoin.conf settings work best for me:

    daemon=1

    logips=1

    maxconnections=40

    maxuploadtarget=5000

    txindex=1

    rest=1

    server=1

    walletrbf=1

    dbcache=100

    I don't have swap and dbcache=100 lets the bitcoin core daemon use ~800MB of memory which works nice for the pi.

    Lessons learned? Not really, running bitcoin core is easy as fuck, simply fire&forget, the fun part starts now when a personal electrum server and a lightning node will come on top, but however there indeed was a lesson I learnt: Don't use fancy shmancy file systems like btrfs on your ssd because creating of swap files is not supported and it took me hours to find out this simple fact^^

    Whether you're referring to the fact that there's only about 17.5 million Bitcoin and 7.5 billion humans, or you're referring to the fact that there's more and more dollar Cost averaging holders being introduced into the system every day is irrelevant. In the end as more and more people take possession of their private keys and as the preset inflation rate of Bitcoin continues to chug along, it will be out of the Legacy financial institutions control as far as the Ascension of Bitcoin. Remember that after the next halvening bitcoin will have an inflation rate less than gold! Compounding that with the continued evolution of the 2nd layer solutions should make for a very promising future for our currency.
