The 2014 story of how a CS professor printed money with his private miner

    Posted: 10 Dec 2018 08:14 AM PST

I find it fascinating to read about the stories of devs who code miners since it's something we don't hear much about. These developers have revenues in the millions per month but often prefer to stay out of the spotlight. Anyway, it piqued my interest when I came across this old blog post from 2014 and thought I'd share the story.

So much of this is way above my head, but I thought it was a fun read nonetheless. The professor outlines how he came to develop his custom miner for Monero and use AWS rentals to generate thousands of dollars in profits. He claims the operation only lasted two months and came crashing down when his source code was leaked on Bitcointalk by someone his partner approached for optimizations.

Interesting how much of a wild west crypto was when you could probably count on your hands the number of programmers qualified to untangle the puzzle of potential miner optimizations. Not too surprising that it was a professor on the PhD admissions committee at one of the top CS universities in the world who ended up taking on the challenge.

What else can I do with a mining rig? Rent it out for rendering?

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 11:50 AM PST

I think it's finally time to shut down the rigs. I'm basically making nothing after power costs now. Is there anything else I can do with the rig to still make some money? Rent it out to someone for rendering?

    Anyone know of any services?

I want to get into GPUMining, where can I look to buy a decent prebuilt/used rig for ~$1K to $2K?

I'm not crazy technical, and I know building and figuring out a rig on my own will be difficult, so I'd like to get a small but decent one so I can become familiar with managing the software, and then maybe expand out with more GPUs or build my own eventually.

I figure since it's unprofitable to mine right now, it's a good time to get started, as the prices of a used mining rig should be pretty fair. I want to explore using the excess heat for heating a tropical cockroach farm, as they prefer 90-95 F.

Is there a place that allows the sales of GPU rigs, and what sort of advice could you give a total newbie?

I'll be mining Monero on it most likely, unless something is significantly more profitable.

I have an RTX 2080, anything I can do with it?

I've never mined anything before but my roommate apparently mined $60 grand with bitcoin back in the day, so I thought I could get into it...

    Compute Mode

    Posted: 09 Dec 2018 05:07 PM PST

Urgh, rookie question. I can't for the life of me get 2 x RX580's into compute mode. I've tried CastXMR's program (which works for the rx470's/80's) but that doesn't work for these 580's. I switched them to compute mode in the Radeon settings, yet stak and castXMR both think they're still in graphics mode, giving less hash (in cast) or BDOS'ing (in stak). Any ideas?
