    Mining Rig Guides and OSes

    Posted: 15 Sep 2018 06:48 AM PDT

I went skimmed over the guides here https://www.reddit.com/r/gpumining/wiki/index

I noticed that in most of them OS of choice is Windows - would you know why? Linux would seem a more obvious choice for a server which a mining rig essentially is. Is it because the choice of OS is so trivial that it doesn't matter and in the guides they just talk about what's easiest - Windows - just so they could concentrate on the assembly part?

    Thanks

    Need Help getting started

    Posted: 15 Sep 2018 04:18 AM PDT

I just got about 8 1080 'Tis Nvidia. I've been looking to start mining for a while and i finally get the graphics cards I need. But everywhere I look it seems mining is dead, I saw something about people using their rigs as a low budget heater and I'm scared. My question is is it still profitable to start GPU mining ? Taking into account that electricity costs about 0.006$ in my country (which is just half of what I've seen on mining websites)

Also I want to know if my calculations according to a few websites are correct. 1.) 1080 'Tis will give me about 25MH/s to 30MH/s each.

2.) I want to know if the mining profitability calculator on Crypto compare is usually up to date or based off some old difficulty. Because if it's right then my rig could make me an average of 150$ per month.

3.) I'm only looking to mine ETH, XMR or LTC. Which would you recommend as if today's date and why? I chose those because they are comfort zones and I really don't want to end up with some dead weight coin.

4.) How exactly can you calculate the difficulty of an algorithm? In relation to the computing power available.

5.) if you all advise me to not mine, what can I do with these cards without selling ? :(

    Difficulty chart.

On CoinWars, it seem to me that I can only see the difficulty and price of 50 coins. Is there any way I can see the difficulty of coins that are not on the main page? For example, coins such as Ravencoin or Ubiq.

    Thanks.

For those of you thinking of getting out, winding down, or giving back: Would you point your miners (or donate your existing mining equipment) to an above-board, transparent charity specifically designed to work with existing crypto miners to transition their assets to assisting charitable sources?

    Posted: 15 Sep 2018 03:35 AM PDT

Simple question. I am currently a small-time operator with 50-ish GPUs. While I am still profitable, I worry about what the future will bring, and I expect that my profit margins will get smaller and smaller to the point that investing more sweat-equity into the business in the form it is in today is unlikely to ROI.

Given that I'd prefer not to go through the hassle of selling the GPUs on what would likely be a flooded market, and I was looking to increase the amount of charitable work I do, I was thinking of doing one or both of these:

    1. Starting a charity that has a charitable multi-pool (like BSOD.pw or zpool, or what have you) where people can point their miners at various addresses and the proceeds will be donated to the selected charity. Website to show transparency, full 403c status, etc. You'd get a receipt for the fair market value of your contribution and, since it would be a real, legal charity, you could claim that as a charitable contribution on your taxes.

    2. Starting a charity where you can donate used GPUs/rigs/power supplies/spare parts where I commit to using the assets for the charity (mining, spares, even reselling should the 2nd-hand market pick back up again.) In return, you get the standard donation (this would be a real 501(c)(3), and I'd do what I am proposing here) receipt that you use for taxes, allowing you to write-off the fair value of the video card at this time for charity (look, I know it isn't a resale, but at least there would be a tax benefit, no messing around, and the working cards/motherboards/power supplies would be used for ongoing charitable work, that would be the commitment of the charity.)

Any interest or comments from the community, aside from the standard reddit cynicism that this is a scam from some nobody with no relevant post history who is just trying to get rich quick or troll somebody or something?

Edit: Fixed the designation of the charitable entity from a retirement fund to the correct non-profit charity - 501(c)(3)
