    GPU Mining /r/GPUMining Survey Results

    /r/GPUMining Survey Results

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 11:00 AM PDT

Thank you to everyone who participated.

Unfortunately, Survey Monkey only allows 100 responses before it tells you that you need to upgrade to a paid version. So, the first 100 responses are included in these results even though many many more responded.

I wanted to do this survey simply to find out what kind of people makeup /r/GPUMining. Mining has become widespread across the globe, so this was an attempt to measure that within our own community so we can all better understand where this is heading.

    Without further ado:

Question 1: Where are you from?

    North America - 59%

    South America - 2%

    Europe - 29%

    Asia - 7%

    Africa - 0%

    Australia - 3%

Question 2: What is your age?

    0-18 - 7.00%

    19-30 - 38.00%

    31-40 - 35.00%

    41-50 - 17.00%

    51+ - 3.00%

Question 3: AMD, Nvidia, or Both?

    AMD 20.00%

    Nvidia 54.00%

    Both 26.00%

Question 4: Why do you mine? (this allowed for multiple choices)

Profit (Immediately sell for Fiat) - 32.00%

    Coin Hoarding - 37.00%

    Support the coins I like - 31.00%

    Investment (Future Gains) - 68.00%

    It's just a hobby - 51.00%

Question 5: What would you do to improve the /r/GPUMining Community?

This was an open ended question, so there are no statistics. There were a few common themes though:

    1. Stricter enforcement of Noob Questions/Create a database of known issues and how to solve them - Great Idea! We're on it!

    2. More news-oriented posts on coin changes and the impact on mining.

    3. Improve the theme (we know... we're just not artistic people, but if you are we welcome you to create a better theme!)

    4. A bunch of posts saying more Tits/Boobs/Breasts/etc. And while I agree with you, this is not a porn subreddit so unfortunately that can't happen.

    5. Concern about downvote bots. Unfortunately we can't do anything about that. We can't see who upvoted or downvoted anything. We're open to suggestions though!

    6. A bunch of other great suggestions that we don't have time/room to post here.

Thank you everyone for your feedback and helping us make this subreddit a better place for miners!

Can this be used for cooling the ambient temp?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2018 07:42 AM PDT

I am thinking of ordering one of This to lower the room Temp if possible, I currently have my 4 rigs in the lounge, the windows open and the doors open so there is airflow through the lounge, but when the heat is at its peak it becomes unbearable. Anyone using of these?

Study: The effect of open air mining rigs on cellular signals in the United States

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 05:56 PM PDT

Summary: mining rigs can emit substantial RF noise and affect signal strength for other RF devices like cellular phones.

Just a warning on Motion (XMN)

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:54 PM PDT

Just recently hit the top of the list to WTM today. Runs off x16r algo. Has masternode system. Did some research on it and came up not wanting to participate. Seems like a scamcoin to me. Firstly. It has no utility other than the x16r algo and a masternode. Whitepaper was super small and very unoriginal. Devs had a premine. Devs offered a presale of their masternodes from day 1. Their masternodes offer crazy fast returns at current prices (20 days give or take). All this screams scam to me and I don't want to be left hodling the bags. Just figured I'd pass along the info.

Board that can support 16 GPUs and Powerfull CPU

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 03:01 PM PDT

I am not mining but I need allot of GPUs on one machine, and allot fo ram 64gigs+ and high end CPU.

I got threadripper 1950X hoping that all the PCIe lanes would allow me to run many GPUs but all it does is 7, I am in touch with AMD and ASUS to see if this can be resolved but if there is no useful solution anyone know what tested options I have on the Intel side?

Rig breaks down when adding GPU

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 01:12 PM PDT

    Hi.

So I fried a GPU earlier, removed it, but my Ethash rig has been a clusterfuck ever since.

I've isolated my rig to 1 GPU, but the problems are similar for all of them.

Whenever I start up my rig, the GPU doesn't get detected properly. I've had multiple scenarios when I keep rearraging hardware:

    • Rig starts up, everything is fine, claymore starts up, GPU turns off, laggy as shit, bluescreens.
    • Rig starts up, GPU turns off, doesn't bluescreen.
    • Rig starts up, GPU stays on, claymore doesn't start presumably because GPU isn't detected.

All the cases have in common:
    - GPU is detected in device manager, GPU Z and Afterburner.
    - Claymore freezes at pool confirmation, probs because it's confused when it tries to detect the GPU.
    - If the rig is usable, GPU Z shows clocks of 0 doesn't detect temps. It also doesn't show up in Corsair Link.

I've DDU'd, reinstalled drivers, different driver versions, pixel patched every time, reinstalled claymore, different claymore version, set it to gen 1 in the bios, tried both of my PSU's, tried different GPU's & risers. Only thing I haven't tried yet is a complete fresh install of Windows.

It runs completely lag free and stuff until I add a GPU, doesn't matter which one.

    Sometimes when I DDU'd & reinstalled most software detected a 570 as a 580.

Am I missing something? It could be the risers, but it would be strange that all of them killed themselves at the same time, which would be weird.

    Specs:
    5x RX 570,
    CX650M & H1000i,
    Pentium G3258,
    Asrock H81 Pro BTC R2.0,
    2x4GB RAM
(specs are kinda weird cause I'm reusing parts from an old PC)

    Thanks!

Three new gpu, two are DOA?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 02:54 PM PDT

I bought two XFX RX580 GTS XXX 8GB for a rig.

Some days later ordered 3 more, which arrived today.

Take into consideration these cards come with 2 bios, one is already modded from the factory for mining.

Took them out of the box, plugged them into my octominer board and one plain doesnt work, making HiveOS just not boot. After fiddling around, switching slots, trying a 1200W PSU, switching cables, etc, this is what I found out.

    • GPU1 works flawlessly on both BIOS.

    • GPU2 on the modded bios doesnt even spin up the fans nor get detected. Works fine on stock bios.

    • GPU3 doesnt work on any bios, doesnt get detected neither spins the fans.

Am I that unlucky? Never recieved a DOA GPU. Today I got two...

    High Power Draw

    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 10:48 AM PDT

I don't understand how 6 rx480s on cryptonightV7 are drawing 880w from the wall (through an energy meter)? All gpus are being powered through a 1200w hp server psu. Im using hiveOS, every card undervolted to 900mv core and 900mv mem. Hive shows gpus only drawing about 450w, so where are the rest of the 400+ w coming from?
