about 6 weeks ago we added Ethereum payments to our art company's website. Because of it, we've exploded in sales and many of our limited pieces are completely selling out. Thank you ethereum community!

Introducing Cryptage: a fully decentralized blockchain-themed strategic game based on Selenean

    Posted: 03 May 2018 09:15 AM PDT

    Hi all,

tl;dr: We have launched a blockchain-themed browser game called Cryptage on Kovnan testnet, you can try it out here: https://cryptage.co

We know that most of you are already sick and tired of all the Crypto[INSERT RANDOM ASSET] "games" (and so are we), as it has become obvious that most of them are created and used primarily with profit and speculation in mind while not bringing anything original to the table and not improving overall ecosystem in any significant way. However, we would still like to share with you some of the related stuff that our team has been working on during past several months. We believe that we might have created something truly original that most of the people from the Ethereum community would find interesting.

The core of our idea is to redefine how blockchain-based games work, primarily the way that profit from minting new digital assets gets distributed. Starting with CryptoKitties and followed by many copycats (no pun intended), it has become obvious that the idea of players having full control over their digital assets is a highly disruptive one. However, majority of these games all still closed and centralized systems in which one central entity (i.e. game developer) retains majority of the control and gathers all the profit from minted assets. We were trying to come up with a way to redesign this entire process from scratch, so that profits get automatically distributed to everyone that was included in the asset's creation. Beside product owners, this list includes usually includes artists, graphic designers, game designers and many other creative types. In other words, we are trying to do for blockchain-based games the same thing that projects like UjoMusic or SingularDTV are doing for the entertainment industry.

Another issue we noticed is that each of the games is essentially a walled garden closed off from all the others, with no existing protocols or guidelines that can make these games interoperable. For example, there is currently no standardized way for players to reuse their owned assets across different games. What we came up with as a potential solution is Selenean, a decentralized platform and framework with a goal to connect game developers and artists along with gamers and digital asset collectors/traders into a single ecosystem that benefits all its participants.

Although Selenean itself is still in the early stage of development, we have also implemented Cryptage Origins - a fully decentralized collectible game which demonstrates all of the ideas that we came up with and wish to integrate into the Selenean. This is intended to be the first in the series of games in the Cryptage world, a futuristic cyberpunk-like (or Cryptopunk, as we like to call it) era where blockchain technology has become deeply integrated into human society. Cryptage Origins is a single-player strategic collectible game where the goal is to create your own blockchain venture by collecting various types of assets and using them to progress through the levels. For the sake of not making this post unreasonably long, I'll let you read more details on the game's website: https://cryptage.co

Keep in mind that this is a beta release, so errors are still very possible and we might have to restart everything at some point if a critical bug occurs. For now, the game has been deployed on Kovan test network and you will therefore need some Kovan ETH in order to play it (our faucet is available at https://faucet.selenean.com). Of course, everything we created so far has been fully open-sourced: Selenean repository Cryptage repository

If you want to get involved in any way, the best way to reach us would be via our Discord channel (the link is available at the bottom of the Cryptage website).

Please play around and let us know what do you think, as we are eager to hear feedback from the larger community :) I don't have the exact number, but I'd say that at least 20 people have been involved in this project, most of which are artists and other creative types who weren't aware of the blockchain world until we introduced them to it. That's why we are hoping that the game will gain some traction, so that upon mainnet release everyone involved can earn additional commision for their work and realize how truly paradigm-shifting this technology can be :)

As for the development team, we will continue working both on Selenean framework and the Cryptage world. One of the major next goals is to implement a fully decentralized multiplayer trading card game based on digital assets that have already been created for Cryptage Origins. We will keep you updated with the progress :)
