[Altcoin Discussion] Friday, May 04, 2018

    Posted: 03 May 2018 09:07 PM PDT

We are trialing an altcoin daily discussion thread. If this doesn't go well we'll cancel it.

Thread topics include, but are not limited to:

    • Discussion related to recent events
    • Technical analysis, trading ideas & strategies
    • General questions about altcoins

    Thread guidelines:

    • Be excellent to each other.
    • All regular rules for this subreddit apply, except for number 2. This, and only this, thread is exempt from the requirement that all discussion must relate to bitcoin trading.
    • This is for high quality discussion of altcoins. All shilling or obvious pumping/dumping behavior will result in an immediate one day ban. This is your only warning.
    • No discussion about specific ICOs. Established coins only.

If you're not sure what kind of discussion belongs in this thread, here are some example posts. News, TA, and sentiment analysis are great, too.

How Crypto Stacks Up Against Other Investments - great visualisations from Bloomberg

    Posted: 03 May 2018 08:23 PM PDT

    Article URL: https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2018-bitcoin-investment/

    From the article:

The crypto fever has quieted down, but the roller-coaster trading has raised the stakes for investors to figure it out.

Are they financial assets, currencies, commodities or something entirely new? Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have defied easy categorization since they burst into the public consciousness last year, fueling an intense debate over how they should fit into the average investor's portfolio—and whether they belong at all.

However you define them, cryptocurrencies have become hard to ignore since Bitcoin's meteoric rise to $20,000 last December (as of May 2, it's now $9,145 after a recent selloff). While past performance is of course no guarantee of future results, we've analyzed the last 16 months of action in digital tokens to shed light on what to expect if—as crypto diehards say—you decide to HODL (hold) despite the FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt).

    Bermuda Cryptocurrency Paradise

    Posted: 04 May 2018 07:58 AM PDT

While in many countries there is still debate about the role of the blockchain, cryptocurrency and their regulation, the lower house of parliament of Bermuda approved the rules governing the ICO or initial coin offerings. And the government signed an agreement with Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange promising investments in blockchain companies, job and education for Bermudians. https://alextones.com/bermuda-new-cryptocurrency-oasis

Am I missing something here? If one is optimistic about the price, why would they wait until it reaches 21k to buy?

    Posted: 04 May 2018 09:38 AM PDT

Waiting for the price to go up before you buy just seems like a great way to get yourself hosed.

    Posted: 03 May 2018 03:17 PM PDT

    What exchanges are you using?

What currency pairs are you trading on?

Did you built your bot from scratch or use a open source alternative on build on?

What would you suggest for someone who is starting out looking to get into market making, is it too late or is it still profitable?

    Question about BitMex

I am curious about the leverage. I am just messing around with Sim at the moment.

What does the second part mean cost @ 45x If I have 0.1058 BTC and buying at x45 so the 40000 contracts, does that mean im going to pay a fee of 0.0988 xbt? (~800 USD of my 1000 USD?) that can't be right. Does this translate to 0.0988/45 ?

Long term investment advice (on a budget). Diversifying vs focusing on just a few coins

    Posted: 03 May 2018 01:07 PM PDT

Hello fellow crypto traders. I came here seeking advice/opnions on a long term investment strategy for someone who doesn't have a ton of money to pour into crypto each month. Since I have begun investing, I have only been focusing on a few projects that I truly believe in. Mainly because I don't have alot of money to put into various different coins. So I'm slowly trying to strengthen my position with a couple of coins. I'm not sure if I'd be better off putting a little money into alot of projects that I like vs most of my money into a few projects that I like in order to maximize my roi? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Is slippage a big factor to consider?

    Posted: 03 May 2018 05:47 PM PDT

Hello Crypto-traders, I am new to trading and have been testing my strategy recently with very little money. The one thing I did not account for when backtesting my trading plan was the difference slippage affects my profits. I do mostly stop orders on the exchange, because of my methodology, so I get a little bit of slippage on my exits. If everything works out, I'm planning to up my capital 10x. My concern is would slippage be higher, percentage wise, as I increase capital? Sorry if this is a dumb question, but please enlighted me. Thanks in advance!

Great ebook to gain more knowledge on Trading/Investing. Also learned how to avoid trading fees.

Found this ebook a couple days ago. Learned a lot about trading. One of the greatest things I probably learned was avoiding trading fees and how bitcoin is actually mined.

Whalepool screenshots of Bitfinex shareholders admitting Tether is illegal.

    Posted: 03 May 2018 03:45 PM PDT

Been looking at the Tether issue recently... I didn't believe the FUD but someone posted screenshots of a whalepool convo, I checked to make sure they were not some edited bullshit FUD before posting here.

swapman admits tether is illegal: https://imgur.com/OZVzE0m

flibbr admits that tether could kill the entire crypto market: https://imgur.com/DnmFhDy

I didn't want to 'fall for the FUD' but even tether cheerleaders admit tether is illegal and a huge target. seems to be kind of odd for them to attack everyone attacking tether but then admit that tether is a huge liability and illegal.

I am out of these markets from this nice bounce, no telling what happens when the shit hits the fan especially with them already being investigated by CFTC
