Lightning nodes are getting DDOS'ed, rumor is that someone from the 2x effort known as "BitPico" has taken credit for this. The Lightning services I've deployed have been attacked from the start, with botnets, etc. Deploying in adversarial conditions, decentralization is hard.

PSA: Now is the time to get verified on your favorite exchange so you are not fumbling around and bitching last minute during the next ATH.

    Posted: 20 Mar 2018 09:52 AM PDT

    Bitching about how:

    • Everything is broken and going to crash and burn in hell

    • They are thieves trying to screw you over

    • They can't get their shart together

    • They won't respond immediately to your email that is identical to 20k other emails that they received in the past 12 hours

    • You missed out on that sweet dip price that only lasted 12ms

    • You missed that sweet ATH sell price that only lasted 12ms

    • Everybody should dog pile and boycot

    Additional notes:

    • Assume no one takes credit cards or paypal

    • Call your bank BEFORE you try to make a transaction IN or OUT to pre verify so you do not get flagged for a fraud transaction that has the potential to lock up funds for an indeterminable amount of time

    • Move your funds in to the exchange the day or week before you intend to purchase

    • If you need your funds deposited faster than a bank or wire transfer to your exchange use a debit card if the option is available

    • make a bank transaction or a test debit card transaction before you intend to make your full buy or sell, this will give you time to work out any kinks with your bank or verification

    • If you do not want to give access to your bank or bank debit card try using a prepaid debit card

    • Get setup on more than one exchange to give you options if your preferred exchange goes down when you need it

Please feel free to add to the list as it is not all inclusive.

Apartment building caught fire - friendly reminder to make BACKUPS of your keys/seeds!

    Posted: 21 Mar 2018 03:05 AM PDT

This happened a few days ago, I was working from home since I had a doctor's appointment later in the day. There's construction work going on on the exterior of my building so to drown out the noise I had my headphones on, listening to music.

I smell smoke, the kind of smoky campfire smell, took the headphones off and could hear a slight crackle of wood on fire, went to the balcony door and got the attention of one of the workers who then realized that there was a fire in the wood beams underneath the roof tiles - the worker guys tried to put out the fire using buckets of water, no success, I stuck my head out the window and saw thick smoke coming out from cracks around the window and underneath the roof tiles (my apartment is on the top floor).

The workers started evacuating everyone in the building, I took what felt like an eternity but might just have been a minute or two, to grab my laptop, my external hard-drive, my passport and my paper wallets and ran down to the street. Could see lots of smoke coming from the roof, saw the firefighters arrive, climb up the scaffolding and start to smash the roof tiles off and spray water everywhere.

Around 3 hours later I'm back in my apartment, one of the rooms where my computers and mining equipment (small rig with 3xGPU) sits, has been heavily water damaged and the wood around the window has been burnt and smashed. The rest of the apartment is in better shape, mostly smoke and soot damage.

I don't hold a life changing amount of money in BTC (+alts), but still enough that it would really suck to have it go up in flames. I always had a plan to make backups and store them in a different physical location, but never got around to it. Luckily the fire was caught early on and no-one was hurt, my paper wallets would probably also have made it through OK (except for water damage) if I hadn't had the time to grab them. But I can't shake the feeling of the pure dumb fucking luck of being home and the fire being spotted early. It's been a bit chaotic with insurance people and stuff the last few days, but I made (password protected) backups of my wallets and have them in three different locations now.

TL;DR: Apartment building caught on fire, only by pure luck was I home and could grab my paper wallets before leaving. BACK UP YOUR WALLETS / SEEDS!

My bitcoins directly to my heir?

    Posted: 21 Mar 2018 12:01 AM PDT

Can I lock some bitcoins for a period on the Blockchain, and renew that lock every 3/6 months? If I can't renew the lock (because, maybe, I'm dead), the bitcoins are automatically transferred to an address controlled by my heir.

    Bitcoin and Evolutionary Biology

    Posted: 20 Mar 2018 10:34 PM PDT

Bitcoin is compatible with principles in evolutionary biology. The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins provides summarized insight as to why the game theory mechanisms in Bitcoin appeal to evidence-based biologic principles. One key concept is that over the course of human evolution (and other species for that matter), we have established an ESS (Evolutionary Stable Strategy), which favours the behaviour of "generally cooperate, and if wronged, retaliate." The behaviour is in dynamic equilibrium with other behaviour types, and a species does not survive if there are critical amounts of "cheaters" in the system. This concept dispels arguments such as, "____ will fail because it is human nature to exploit/kill/impede others," because it is not. This is game theory (reiterated prisoner's dilemma) applied to evolutionary biology. Distributed consensus DOES work, and it works towards the majority's best interests. The idea is further reinforced in the field of behavioural economics, where they explore the innate nature of the social contract. Check out Dan Ariely - "Predictably Irrational."

Another important concept is with regards to altruistic behaviour, and how apparent altruism is driven by seflish motives to perpetuate an individual's genes. There is no true altruism in biology, but rather an innate understanding of helping others for the sake of optimizing our own best interests. This concept consolidates the idea of why an incentivized Proof of Work system really is the best mechanism to expand the network effect and security for Bitcoin. The incentives are aligned with human nature.

    I'm having fun.

    Posted: 20 Mar 2018 11:58 AM PDT

I've been really enjoying myself over the past ~6 months. I've only invested what I could afford to lose, and even though I'm down, I really have enjoyed the opportunity to learn and experience this community.

I've never felt any dread since I was prepared for this to all go to zero - and the information and ways of thinking that I've learned will ultimately be more valuable as I apply them to work and other investments!

Hopefully there are others who can experience a similar levity, openness, and curiosity that I've tried to approach the space with.

    Thanks again!

The most elegant aspect of Bitcoin is that it assumes that people are greedy and will act on their own self interests

    Posted: 20 Mar 2018 07:43 AM PDT

So often in our society we devise systems that trust people to act in the interest of others. Time and time again we have seen this fail. Particularly in governance systems. In Bitcoin the proper incentives were put in place to devise a system where greed is actually productive.

I have known this for a long time, but for some reason today it stood out to me as something very exciting
