Understanding Ripple, XRP, SWIFT, and the global money transfer ecosystem.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 11:53 AM PST

Below is my attempt to quantify the market that Ripple is going after and what it means to XRP and its value . There is a lot of large math but bear with me because all of these numbers point to where Ripple and XRP are currently and where they could be.

    The Marketplace in Numbers

In 2017 approximately $1.425 quadrillion was transferred globally using SWIFT. Here the math:

    1. SWIFT messages sent per day in 2017(assuming 200 business days): $35,500,000.00 (REF:A)
    2. Daily $ transferred: $7,128,804,434,230.90 (calculated by taking 2005 daily transfer value (REF:B) and assuming 3%(which is low) growth year over year)
    3. Value of average SWIFT transfer: $200,811.39 (SWIFT Messages/Daily $ transferred)
    4. $ Transferred in 2017: $1,425,760,886,846,180.00

In comparison to SWIFT, Fedwire (Federal Reserve Wire Transfer service for US banks) moved $766,961,537,000,000.00 in 2016 (REF:C) and the whole remittance industry's (Wester Union, MoneyGram, etc) only transferred approximately $595,694,726,962.88 (REF:D). Obviously the word "only" is relative here as that number is still quite impressive.

When add SWIFT, Fedwire, and the remittance industry together those groups are moving over $2.1 quadrillion each year… that's 107x USA's national debt, at the time of writing.

Ripple's Game Plan (as I understand it.)

Ripple is after that 2 quadrillion dollar market but they have only just taken a few baby steps so far. In terms of international wire transfers, Ripple wants to first get banks to adapt xCurrent which is the blockchain version of SWIFT with some major upgrades and is estimated to be about 40% of the cost of SWIFT.

Once xCurrent is adapted then they will try and convince banks to use XRP as a source of liquidity which should save an additional 10%, making xCurrent about 70% cheaper than SWIFT. 60-70% savings is no laughing matter considering that average SWIFT transfer costs $63(REF:E), which extends to $447,300,000,000.00 per year. The implantation of xCurrent would save consumers and banks $268,380,000,000.00 each year without the implementation of XRP and $313,110,000,000.00 with it.

Ripple also has two other "solutions" as they call it. xRapid which is a low-cost liquidity solution, basically what they would, hopefully, convince banks to use after the adaption of xCurrent. Currently, xRapid is being beta tested by some remittance companies (moneygram, etc), but again that is a small portion of the overall global money transfer ecosystem.

The other solution is xVia which is for,"… corporates, payment providers and banks who want to send payments across various networks using a standard interface." I imagine the target audience of this solution would be Amazon or Alibaba, basically large multinational corporations who are doing business in all corners of the globe and are interested in reducing their costs and improving the bottom line. I haven't looked into how large of a market this is as it is tough to quantify the potential of global markets, specifically emerging markets. Also, this solution is not operational yet.

    Why it matters?

    1. It shows the ambition of the ripple team. They are in the select group of crypto companies/currencies that are attempting to address a real world problem, worth quadrillions of dollars.

    2. It's a quadrillion dollar market that is growing and will continue to grow with the global economy. If Ripple was to capture just a quarter of this market ($2,741,647,648,216.43) and managed to implement XRP in said market. A single XRP token would have to be worth, at minimum, $27.42 ($2,741,647,648,216.43/99,992,618,103.26(REF:E)=27.42).

This figure does not account for transaction costs (the destruction of XRPs), the potential impacts of xVia, or the growth of the global economy.

    1. This math also shows how much farther Ripple and XRP have to go before they are real contender in the global money transfer ecosystem.

    Summary

Ripple is after a huge marketplace. The success of Ripple will not necessarily result in an increase in value for the XRP token, especially if it is not adapted. If Ripple is successful both in convincing banks to use their software solutions and XRP a source of liquidity the value of XRP could increase 2,700-10,000% but there is no timeline for this as there are too many unknowns. Simply put Ripple are just pups nipping at the heels of giants. Only time will tell if they level the playing field or the playing field levels them.

Relax, the pain is almost over, BTC 200-Day moving average almost breached and then time to strap in.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 07:56 AM PST

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-02/get-ready-for-the-bitcoin-recovery-technicians-point-to-rebound

Above is a link to a Bloomberg article explaining how when BTC hits it's 200 day moving average, that's when the bulls will enter the market and this latest correction will be over. [I am not a professional trader, this is my opinion and not trading advice. Do not invest what you can't afford to loose]

*[Edit] here's another chart depicting the BTC sellofts and gains since mid 2016, which shows a 100-500% gain after every major sell-off. Translation, chill out and relax. http://static4.businessinsider.com/image/5a60a61428eecc110f8b5699-538/screen-shot-2018-01-18-at-84833-am.png

I am no expert trader of stocks but I have been in the crypto market for 2.5 years. Lately, I've been seeing this same argument, about the 200 day moving average, on other investing sites and youtube crypto-trading sites. Alt-coins are still tied to BTC and are effected by the corrections. Unfortunately no amount of good news with XRP, in this bear-market, will positively XRP's price. But it appears as though the bleeding is almost over and the market is due for a nice rebound.

That means if by tomorrow morning BTC is down another 13%, you'd better make your last call for cheap alts and cheap XRP because wallstreet and institutional investors have been curious and interested in crypto (gauged by the amount of mainstream media coverage and ETFs lately) like XRP but no professional trader would in their right mind would buy in at an all-time-high. Well, this presents the perfect opportunity for traders to enter the market and when they enter, this correction will be a distant memory.

I threw in a good chunk yesterday, as did my brother and if BTC is down to $6300-6400 tomorrow morning, I will double down and buy down more. It is my belief that we will never see these low prices again in the future of crypto, and that goes for every alt-coin out there. The only way to make real money in crypto is to buy for a good price and sell at a higher price (my xrp sell price is half at $50 and then $100). Wallstreets has a saying, "Buy when there's blood in the streets" and that's a principal that most novice traders don't adhere to. Even if you don't buy more just rest easy knowing that the crypto market correction will soon be over. To the hodlers goes the reward.

What's the status on the Japan and South Korea pilot program? Also, how to directly invest in Ripple the company rather than XRP?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 07:47 AM PST

The testing between Japan and South Korea were supposed to end late January. I haven't heard any news about it lately.

Also, how do you directly invest in the Ripple company. Their mission is the future, their technology, but it might grow into other avenues rather than solely XRP.

    Looking for an Explanation.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 06:25 AM PST

I'm a hodler and all, and I definitely don't intend on selling any time soon (especially with the price being at below $1 USD) but i'm getting very confused and very discouraged as ripple as an investment.

I research Ripple all of the time. I love seeing the implementation of Ripple/XRP, but I can't help to feel really discouraged at this point. I'm sure i'm not alone in this.

I guess I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that Ripple is probably doing better than all, if not most, other cryptocurrencies in terms of implementation and overall real world usage, yet it still is insignificant in price. (The only two that come to mind when I think "doing better" are Bitcoin and Ethereum. And Bitcoin is only on the list because it still hodls it's place as the standard for crypto conversion.)

I'm NOT in this for the "get rich quick", i'm in it for the long haul. But i'm still feeling significantly discouraged. Why is Ripple still plummeting (idk if i should even use that word) in price even though all I see are how it's being implemented in new areas and in bigger/better ways and how much other businesses love it?

Edit: Thanks to everyone for such fast comments that helped ease my stress. Like I mentioned in a reply to a comment, i'm a new investor. I think i'm just getting nervous. But everyone who commented is right and I need to listen to you all. Just HODL and wait a (few) year(s) and see how it all pans out.

What would happen if Ripple was acquired/sold.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 02:52 PM PST

I've been reading about some of Ripple's key staff. Mostly CFO Ron Will, his last two appointments were are companies that got acquired, then he left the next year. Also Brad Garlinghouse left Hightail after disagreements with the board, he wanted to sell, they didn't.

I'm guessing they have an exit plan, I'm just wondering if they got acquired by for example VISA, what would happen to XRP?

Just incase you don't know: Ron Will: Bright Roll (2011 - 2015, acquired by Yahoo in 2014) & TubeMogul (2016 - 2017, acquired by Adobe in 2016)

    Price thoughts on XRP?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 09:03 PM PST

Just wondering guys on your thoughts about XRP pricing?

I stupidly bought some Ripple when it was a bit too high and now things are crashing I'm HODL'ing hard, any thoughts if this will rebound soon?

So much Cry if it hits any lower, currently at 75c AUD approx on BTCMarkets.

Should we expect the price to stop bleeding anytime soon?

I know this has been a commonly asked question, but I can't seem to find a simple answer. Is the reserve lowered after a certain amount of time or is it price based?

Does circulating supply effect currency's price?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 07:39 PM PST

I've heard that low circulating supply increases the price of a currency. That's why Bitcoin price went up really high.

    You know, supply and demand.

Does that mean Ripple, since it has so much circulating supply in comparison to other currencies, won't go as high in the future?

This shows the a comparison of circulation supply:

Listing of partnerships and when testing commenced?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2018 04:11 AM PST

Does anyone know of a compiled list of all partnerships, when the partnership was announced and which date they either started testing/production xCurrent and/or xRapid testing/production?

Would be great to see timelines of said events in a table format.

Also, would anyone like to take a stab at how long a test should take before production implementation and then how long after should we expect xRapid. I'm not looking for definitive answers, just general timelines when it comes to banks and them adopting new tech.
