Why We Started A Manipulation-Resistant Subreddit. Posted: 05 Feb 2018 02:13 PM PST Why r/Layer2? Have you noticed how manipulated ethereum subreddits are? We have. Mods have to make a decision about how to filter posts:
While we can all agree that a front-page dominated by manipulated posts is suboptimal, what is the effect of high touch moderation? Text-only posts are great for important community discussions, but they are not suitable for all types of information. Medium posts and announcements from new and cool projects get caught in the spam filter just like everyone else, but those projects are the lifeblood of a growing community. We want a place for the community to learn about cool stuff and important news. We call it r/Layer2. We think it compliments r/ethereum quite nicely. Layer2 is a subreddit focused projects that are building on top of blockchains (so ethereum stuff, mainly). It has a unique moderation system; it is token-curated. Anyone may come on the ConcourseQ discord (https://discord.gg/KPcfhpj) and suggest an article. Only Layer2-Curators may nominate suggested items for the subreddit, and only Layer2-Curators may upvote items into the feed. Once an item gets the required upvotes (3), the ConcourseQ bot ("Mistake Not…") will transmit the item to reddit. Tokens Rewards: Suggest an item that wins inclustion: +2 Qs Nominate a suggest item that wins inclusion: +2 Qs Nominate an original item that wins inclusion: +4 Qs Upvote a nominated item that wins inclusion: +1 Q What good are Qs: Qs have no purpose yet. I created a smart contract for Fermat's last theorem Posted: 05 Feb 2018 01:31 PM PST I created a smart contract that has the logic for Fermat's last theorem: an + bn = cn where n > 2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermat%27s_Last_Theorem https://etherscan.io/address/0xdfab9f43f279bd8bd87026b84105c5d1543ae99e I also added a small bounty for anyone to claim if you can provide a solution. This should however not be possible since it was proven that there exists no solution. There could however be a bug in the contract since it's audited only by me. The motivation is mainly to explore new use cases for the public Ethereum blockchain and any feedback is welcome :) [link] [comments]

10,000 Tons CO2 per day and climbing - EIP 858: Reduce block reward Posted: 05 Feb 2018 06:01 AM PST In 8 days, since the last post on this, the hashrate has increased over 11% pushing the baseline network power consumption to roughly 790 MW with a corresponding network contribution to global CO2 of over 10,000 Tons per day (refs). As a community we should support a reduction in the block reward (EIP 858) in order to reduce the demand we are making for mining. There is little downside and significant upside potential benefit from supporting a reduced block reward. Given adequate security on a forked 1 ETH/block chain there is little reason for users to choose a 3 ETH/block chain. If that security does not materialise the original 3 ETH/block chain remains available for use (+ experience). From a technical standpoint, the changes required for providing users with this choice are minimal (not a distraction). It's much more a matter for the community to decide is worth it's effort. And surely it is worth the effort when the cost/benefit is so attractive. [link] [comments]

How to lure a physics PhD into the Ethereum space? Posted: 05 Feb 2018 01:36 PM PST I promised an old high school friend with a PhD in physics that there are interesting maths problems to be found here. However, I don't know them because they're above me. Where should he start to look for an introduction to the good stuff? [link] [comments]
Is there any plan for a decentralized twitter clone? Posted: 05 Feb 2018 10:11 AM PST I know there are projects for e.g. decentralized storage and decentralized cloud computing on the Ethereum network. Has anybody heard of a decentralized twitter clone? (which I suppose could use some decentralized advertisement to pay for some decentralized computing and storage...) [link] [comments]

Can't figure out how to import Mist account correctly Posted: 05 Feb 2018 05:20 PM PST So I installed Mist a few months ago and it put the Geth folder on my main drive (SSD). There is now not enough room on that drive to continue downloading the chain. I needed to upgrade Mist anyways so I went and downloaded the latest version. This install actually let me choose the Geth directory so I put it on my HDD with plenty of room. I moved my key from the keystore into the keystore of the new folder. I still couldn't see my account when running mist. Luckily if I run my old Mist on the old chaindata, I can see that it's still there and it still has all my ether in it. I thought maybe I could run geth and point it at the new folder using datadir="new path", but that hasn't worked. If I click Add Account I can actually see my old account in the list to add, but when I click Authorize it just closes. I'm really frustrated and at a loss as to what to do. Does anyone have any idea what's happening here? Is it because the new Mist version can't authorize the keyfile from the old Mist version? [link] [comments]
Best (short) video explaining Ethereum and smart contracts? Posted: 05 Feb 2018 08:33 AM PST Can anyone direct me to a great youtube video explaning Ethereum and smart contracts, that is between 2 to 4 minutes? I am helping out a friend with a presentation at work and she is looking for a great intro video, to kick off with. Thanks for your help! Edit: found some great ones in the sidebar. If anyone has any other suggestions that would great too. [link] [comments]
Posted: 04 Feb 2018 11:34 PM PST My gf made me a Ethereum blockchain based birthday card and it was awesome (yeah, we're kinda geeks). As Valentines day is approaching I've convinced her to develop it more, so all tech & crypto enthusiasts can easily put their love messages into the blockchain too! It deploys an Ethereum smart contract, so you can call it from any clients or simply by using the browser. Here's a sample message. If your significant other doesn't love crypto yet, that's your best shot ;). PS. With the code GeekyValentines you will get 20% off at www.ethernal.love. [link] [comments]
