Stealth Ethereum-Based Company pays ~$1 billion for land in Nevada next to Tesla, Google, Apple.

    Posted: 25 Jan 2018 09:32 PM PST

Not sure how this news isn't piquing more interest: https://www.rgj.com/story/money/business/2018/01/23/industrial-park-houses-tesla-gigafactory-nearly-sold-out-after-blockchains-deal/1059002001/

    Some interesting/weird facts:

    • ~65,000 acres purchased by Blockchains LLC, paid in cash. That is 20x the land holdings of their new neighbors (Tesla's Gigafactory @ 3,000 acres, Google @ 1,200 acres).

    • Tahoe Reno Industrial Center's website lists land price at $2.25/sf which would be ~$100,000/acre. This would be imply $6.5 billion paid, however if you compare to previous discounts (i.e. Google's discount) of ~1/4 of that, it's safe to say $1 billion is a ballpark number for the final price paid.

    • Blockchains LLC's's apparently new website is rather barren, with no clear indication of what they actually do, except for running ETHnews.com and creating distributed apps on the Ethereum blockchain. Their linkedin company page only shows 10 employees, led by a Jeffrey Berns (CEO) and David Berns (COO). Not to mention that "Blockchains LLC" sounds a lot like an impersonation company name.

    • David Berns is also the CFO of Berns INC, which "creates software using blockchain-based technology." Its a small company with only 9 people, 5 of which are developers. Most of the people working for Berns INC overlap with Blockchains LLC, and I wouldn't be surprised if Blockchains LLC is just a subsidiary of Berns INC

    • Jeffrey Berns and David Berns are also partners at BernsWeiss LLP law firm, which is a "virtual currency class action practice"

Maybe I'm not aware of these companies footprint on the Ethereum ecosystem, but to me its weird that a relatively unknown company has $1 billion cash to drop on land only, with no clear indication about what they're going to use it for besides 150 acres for a "campus park that will house the company's headquarters". For 10 people?!

Anyone have any more information on this?

I need your advice! Is this going to far?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2018 01:59 PM PST

Okay, so I've heard of some pretty crazy stories about how people secure their recovery phrases, private keys, etc. Maybe I got caught up in it all, but let me know what you think!

So today I copied my Nano Ledger S recovery seed into a large dictionary--putting each of my recovery word's corresponding number next to its counterpart in the dictionary, essentially creating a lengthy puzzle and scrabbling my recovery phrase across a few hundred pages!

While ingenious in theory, what follows may be taking things a little to far. I then took the dictionary with me to the bank and opened a safety deposit box where it now sits idle, waiting to be taken out in case my Ledger becomes lost or stolen.

I invite you to tell me what you think and how you secure your coins, as I'm pretty sure I'm taking things a bit overboard to say the least. Thank you, in advance!

    EMRs using smart contracts

    Posted: 26 Jan 2018 11:41 AM PST

Not entirely sure if this is the correct subreddit to post this in, but is there anyone out there willing to work with me on electronic medical records using smart contracts? I've been teaching myself to code smart contracts using solidity, Mist, and Geth. I'm a nurse that works in the medical insurance industry. Message me if you're interested. Thanks!

FYI, yes I've checked out medicalchain but it seems like their setup is just to place the blockchain on top of servers/services that already exist. What I'm trying to do is build a whole new record keeping system for the medical industry as a whole that is instant, P2P, and trustless. If this is crazy, lmk.

Please cross post this to the proper subreddit or send me a link to it and I'll post it there myself. Thank you!

I'm in the early phases of planning a complex project, and I'm trying to decide if I should build it as an Ethereum dapp or just go the more traditional route.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2018 12:37 PM PST

The project will involve users purchasing and/or earning a virtual currency. They can then use this currency to 'buy' virtual features, or they can risk the currency in a contest of sorts against other users. The winner(s) of the contest will be rewarded with the bulk of the entry fees that all contestants risked.

If the project is successful, users will be able to cash out any virtual currency that they have earned for real money.

I have been reading up on Ethereum and am very fascinated with the technology and possibilities. However, I don't want to needlessly complicate the development of this project.

What benefits could I gain by basing this project on the Ethereum block-chain? What challenges or risks am I likely to face?

If you need more information to answer these questions I'd be more than happy to give it, I just didn't want to over complicate this post.

Some quick info on me: bachelors of CS, 10 years full-time programming, C++, C#, Python, JavaScript/Html/Css, SQL. I've lead the design and development of large projects, some of which involve automating transactions between business partners.

Thanks for reading and for any help you can provide!
