    Welcome New Miners; Attention Veterans:

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 06:13 PM PST

    Hi everyone.

BTC and crypto have been in the news more than usual this past week and a half. BTC value has skyrocketed, plus other GPU-mineable coins have appreciated recently, momentarily increasing our mining profits. Plus Black Friday / Cyber Monday just happened and people are just now receiving and setting up their new systems. To the new miners: WELCOME!

The downside to this surge is that our sub is getting swamped in what I call low-effort posts. How do I mine BTC? Can I solo mine ETH with my 1060? What's the best coin? Can my printer mine?Seriously, I'm screening these out to prevent sub clutter but we're getting 40+ of these a day.

So I'm thinking for the next week or so I'll stop enforcing the sidebar rules and just let anything go. This can be frustrating for those of us that come to this sub for deeper content, aka the veterans around here that help the new miners from leading each other astray. Keep helping, you folks are invaluable. Just keep in mind you're about to see a flooding of low-effort posts.

This time next week (Tues) I will reassess and most likely start enforcing the sidebar rules once again.

Once again, WELCOME NEW MINERS!! Welcome to the show! See the sidebar for help and guides, use our sub's search feature, or just start a new thread called "HALP!" Cheers!

edit: new folks check out our discord channel for more immediate help

Graphics card / riser power cable question

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:08 AM PST

So I was unaware that you should not use SATA riser connectors or SATA to molex converters for your risers. I was using a Sata to molex converter for my riser for a while and decided to double check. I was under the impression that the PCI 6 and 8 pin connectors were supplying power to the video cards, and the riser connectors were irrelevant, and were used to simply power the risers.

Also, can I power three risers at once with one 6 pin to 3x molex cable? I am missing anything here and does it all sound correct? Luckily I did not burn my house down. I was running GTX 1080 tis at 200watts.

Is Altcoin Mining on a Laptop using an External GPU okay?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:24 AM PST

I am hearing altcoin (such as ETH) mining would give a littlebit extra income so that I want to give it a try with a substantially minimum cost by using one of my two old dell laptops and by installing an external PCI/PCIe express and GPU card. I have no technical background,,,, all is based on my readings. In order to get best performance, however, I am seeking professional advise and better info on the selection of type of PCI express, GPU card, laptop and any additional component I need to accomplish my goal. Would you so please provide your generous advise. Bellow is the detail of two of my laptops. What upgrade I have to make? Do you think my ambitious plan will work ?

    RX 580 vs GTX 1070?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 08:39 PM PST

I'm looking to get into mining, and I'm torn between two options. I've found some GPUs on craigslist. Should I go for a used RX 580 for $230 or a new OEM GTX 1070 pulled from an HP Omen for $275? Thanks in advance!

    Whattomine GTX 980TI?

I see a lot of people recommending whattomine.com but I do not see a GTX980TI on their website. Do I just find the most comparable card (1070) and use that as a reference?

Can’t use one of my 1070s and a 1070ti at the same time on windows 10

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 09:37 PM PST

Hi guys, I'm having issues getting all my cards working unsure windows 10. I also have a thumb drive with simple mining OS and that works fine with all 3 cards. When I boot into windows, one of my 2 gtx 1070 gives an error code 12 "not enough resources to use this device" error in the windows device manager.

I have 8 gigs of ram, my virtual memory is up to 8 gigs and I'm us background an ASRock h81 btc rev 2 board with the latest firmware.

I tried disable the serial ports, parallel port and sound card but still get the same error.

Any clue why this might be happening?

RX 580 GPU Mining with AMD-XMR-STAK

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 08:26 PM PST

Hi all, I recently started mining on my gaming pc and on whattomine.com it said that with the cryptonight algorithm i would be getting 690 H/s but im only able to get 600 H/s at the most, after overclocking. When i undervolt my GPU (running at 1150 mhz core clock and 2150 mem clock) the hashrate is only 570 H/s and this is after I changed some settings in the config file. I'm wondering why my hashrate is so much lower than what other people are getting.

All fine until 4th GPU plugged in

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 03:52 PM PST

I can use any set of 3 out of 4 GPU's, but when I plug all 4 in at once, my computer never boots.

It appears to not even fully turn on, since when I press the power button it immediately is off again (essentially no lag, and no having to long press either). AMD drivers installed and working. Mining works with any 3 GPU's, in any PCIe lane, just adding the last one gives it a hard time.

    Any tips?

7 gpu rig; Keep losing a gpu under load

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 06:26 PM PST

z170 motherboard with updated bios; 8gig ddr4 This has become a recent issue, which i can't seem to figure out. I can start the computer and all gpu's are fine. I'm currently using nicehash, and after a short period i always lose gpu #6. I have several extra cards that all work. I tried to replace #6 but the issues continues. edit: The card never actually turns off just loses everything in Afterburner everything reads zero. Video card still runs, just doesn't mine

Are multiple 750 Ti's still viable for mining?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 05:36 PM PST

I first got into GPU mining back in the first big wave of altcoins in 2014, mostly mining Doge and other Scrypt and X11 coins. That was around the time the 750 Ti came out, became the sleeper hit when previous mining was dominated by AMD cards, and lauded for its power efficiency.

Given its power stats, does it still make sense to buy mutiples of this card? Even though they were made to handle up to 60W, the stock Bios limited most cards to 40W, so you could either go full power saver with stock, or push them up with wattage to spare. I was able to run 5 of them well with a single 80+ bronze 500w PSU at full tilt. I mined for about a year and then sold my entire rig. Right now I've just been mining through NiceHash with a 1060 3GB (my main computer GPU) for a week.

Worth it to buy used 750 Ti's for mining again, or has anything replaced the 750 Ti in this niche?

    4th GPU (1080ti) error 43?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 04:37 PM PST

So, rig has been flawless for the past few weeks, just ordered and attempted to install a 4th GPU. With no success. I've tried just about everything I can think of:

    • Full removal and reinstall of latest GeForce drivers

    • Three different risers

    • Reset BIOS to factory defaults then reconfigured for 4G Decoding

    • Set PCI rails all to Gen 1 and Gen 2 both to no success.

Really at a loss here, any ideas would be great help.

Just realized I don't have enough 8 pin connectors.... what do I do?

    So I have 2 x EVGA Supernova 850 G2 PSU's and 6 x EVGA GTX 1070 FTW enroute. I did not realize the 1070 FTW requires 2 x 8pin connections each....

    My total connections from PSU are: 8 x 8 pin (6+2) and 4 x 6pin

    I need: 12 x 8 pin for GPU's and 6 x 6 pin for the risers...
    What do I do here?

Question about Electricity/Wiring for 4 rigs

    Posted: 28 Nov 2017 04:02 PM PST

Hello, I am getting into the mining hobby, and purchased 4x 8 GPU's rigs (all using 1070's). Each rig would produce about 1300 watts, x4 it would be 5200 watts total. I have a space planned out for them ones I receive them, the plug right now in that space is for an AC (has an AC outlet plug) 220 V and has a dedicated 30 Amps from the breaker to that plug. So my question is what is the best way to approach the situation in order to disconnect the AC permanently and just use it for the 4 mining rigs. Should I convert that AC plug into 2x 110 volts and just plug 2 rigs on each outlet? Would that be enough to handle the 4 rigs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
