| Posted: 26 Jan 2022 01:49 PM PST So as many of you have heard the "America Competes Act" can potentially be problematic for crypto in the U.S. This proposition will allow a sole individual to ban exchanges and other financial institutions from engaging in cryptocurrency transactions. The individual that could potentially hold these unchecked powers is none other than the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen. The very individual who has be opposed of the crypto market since her confirmation, this is also the same individual who had the brilliant idea to look into bank accounts for possible tax evasion. It doesn't just stop there, this would allow Yellen to employ what is called the " Bank Secrecy Act" to require certain financial institutions to report information around transactions potentially connected to money laundering, as well as prohibit them from serving account holders with such alleged ties to illicit funds. While the act isn't something new it would go against the essence of what Defi stands for. While on paper this can be limited to those are under suspicion of money laundering and illicit fund activity we all know how quick this can be used to cover more users and account holders. This can be dangerous considering Yellen would have unilateral power over this sector. Crypto means something different to every individual in communities like r/ethereum to some a hedge against the current inflation, a means to increase personal wealth, monetary freedom and anonymity, whatever the reason is we are all in this together. This post is not to spread FUD or to get people to sell in order to give me a better buying opportunity. I have been in the space and can navigate it according to what my goals are. This post is a mere source of information to allow U.S holders to call the respective representatives and let their voices be heard. If you're are fortunate enough to have a representative to actually consider its constituents views call them! If you are like me and reside in California you know calling your representatives regarding topics like crypto is like talking to a brick wall, but we must insists our views are represented fairly on what we want. | Lost 17,000 $ of ETH due to hacked Metamask wallet Posted: 27 Jan 2022 06:46 AM PST Today I created a new account in my Metamask wallet, and then sent 7.73 ETH (~ 17,000 $ at the current price) from an exchange to it. The transaction went through (https://etherscan.io/tx/0x94ba0929f5b7fde43fcb1210664dd2e7335702b36c10435b988a5e15f5247d31) and the ETHs went into my account normally. But just 13 seconds later, they were automatically transfered to an unknown addresss out of my control (https://etherscan.io/tx/0x9956fe0a86aef0ff6252af023baa662e202353d3715befaa671ba5ff71669d14). I carefully examined the recieving address （https://etherscan.io/address/0xc48c4e7339cc1f885bdd4ea624429b4039540fed), over the past 40 days it has many transactions like this. It seems like my Metamask wallet has been compromised and a bot or smart contract automatically made the transfer. By searching on Reddit and the Metamask support page, many people have encountered the same problem, but no solution to it. I've lost my bag of beloved ETH, as well as a sizeable amount another favourite of mine, LINK, both of which were being stored in my MetaMask wallet. Worst of all, I have a Ledger Nano X on the way which I ordered a couple of days ago because I had decided that with the amount of funds I have in crypto, keeping it in cold storage was long overdue. I'm not the most tech savvy person, so in hindsight, I should have done this long ago. Now a whole year of accumulating is down the shitter. To make matters worse, I have severe anxiety as a result of OCD and perfectionist tendencies, which only compound the gut wrenching feeling of losing a significant amount of my net worth. How do I transact a small amount to let them know their wallet is compromised. The public wallet is findable in the web. I won't state it here. It's an invalid Ether address. Explanation by u/PinkPuppyBall. It was very educational nonetheless. Thanks! It's invalid due to an artifact of the elliptic-curve cryptography the keys are used in: ...private key is converted to a public key by performing an EC point multiplication with the curve's base point. The result is an (x,y) coordinate pair, which constitutes the public key. Essentially, the zero key asks the system to multiply the base point by 0, which gives the zero-point on the elliptic curve. This is the point at infinity in the projective representation of the curve, which has no representation in the usual (x, y) coordinates. So it's mathematically impossible to construct a readable public key from the 0 private key, and it's excluded by fiat from elliptic-curve cryptography. I don't know how the ethereum system generates 0x3f17f1962B36e491b30A40b2405849e597Ba5FB5 from the 0 private key, but it probably involves a fallacy somewhere along the way.
