How I used the blockchain against scammers who scammed me and got them to double my funds free of charge

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 10:44 AM PST

Quick TL:DR of what happened in my previous post

Basically, I got a phishing DM on discord and clicked on the link, thinking that a project I was following was finally live and allowed me to mint. I thought all of my money was lost, and hit a dead end everywhere I looked, but luckily all hope wasn't lost, and I was able to miraculously recover my funds + basically doubled what I had while causing the scammers to waste thousands of dollars on gas

Now for the meat and the potatoes of what happened as soon as I got scammed. I immediately freaked out and tried to do whatever I can to uncover the identity of these scammers. The phishing website they created (now deleted) was https://fox-game.art/ and i did a Whois lookup, but the scammers had covered their tracks pretty well as seen here. They'd used namecheap (which basically hides their true email, IP, address, phone number, etc) so the details of the website couldn't be traced back to them.

Now I decided lemme check out the blockhain and see previous transactions that they did, from their address, and I found out they had sent their funds over to a proxy address before cashing out via fixedfloat

Armed with this info I fired off an email o fixedfloat, and to the privacy email address which was connected to their email (think of it like a string of characters that each individual using namecheap has, but until they reply, their real email isn't exposed), and hoped that something happened. As a matter of fact, something did happen. Fixedfloat reached out to me and announced they blacklisted their wallet, and they'd freeze their funds the next time they made a transaction, and the scammers, freaked out by the threatening email I sent tried to cash out 0.067 eth, or the amount the scammed from me via fixedfloat as a test to see if my threat had any sustenance.

And it did! Fixedfloat froze the 0.067 eth they sent, and the scammers freaking out emailed me( don't know if I can share em here because of doxxing stuff) but they immediately refunded the eth they stole from me, and started begging me to tell fixed float that I had made a mistake with my report, so I decided to play their game, and wasted their time by telling them that the only way I'd help em out is if they sent 1 ETH to the burn address, but sadly they were cheap stakes and realized that the situation had reached a point of no return, and basically moved their funds out via tornado cash

Fixedfloat said they'd refund me if they got an email from a law enforcement agency and pass on the scammers info, or if 3 months passed, and they didn't hear anything back from them (I'm pretty sure they don't have anything to say since the scammers spent 0.15 ETH a moving money into tornadocash)

Either way, I was super lucky that the scammers took my bait and responded to my email I sent, and they revealed their email, as well as refunded me, but there are a couple of things you can do if your in a similar situation, and ended up getting scammed, even though prevention and being smart is the best way to avoid the headache in the first place.

    1. Do a Whois lookup, and try to find the scammers email or other identifying information and reach out to them, and notify them that your going to report them to law enforcement unless they refund you

    2. Check out their wallet, because they have to convert their crypto to fiat at one point, and often use a swap service or centralized exchange, to whom you can reach out to

    3. File a police report and contact other law enforcement entities because most exchanges will use that to release their funds back to you, if they seize em, or forward their information to law enforcement agencies so they can pursue charges

What does "Minting" in Crypto and DEFI mean? (Educational)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 05:27 AM PST

In order to get the community more educated, I've prepared a video where I explain the term "Minting" in DEFI, what it means and how it looks like on the blockchain explorers websites:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQkwA1eRMo8

In the video, I am explaining how to mint tokens with smart contracts and how to track token minting on blockchain explorers like etherscan, bscscan, polyscan, ftmscan, and more.

We will also look at the example of PancakeSwap cake token minting and we will see how it looks like in the blockchain using bscscan.

We will understand everything related to minted tokens on the blockchain and finally, you will be able to detect how minting tokens look like.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Ethereum 2.0 Beacon Chain Celebrates Its First Anniversary

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 08:18 AM PST

The Ethereum community is rejoicing as the Ethereum 2.0 Beacon Chain is celebrating its first year anniversary. This is notable for being the first step towards the upgrade to Ethereum 2.0.

Since the release of the Beacon Chain in 2020, Ethereum went through a series of important updates in its roadmap for Ethereum 2.0 and move from the PoS consensus mechanism.

Back in April, we experienced the Berlin hard fork which was a success, pushing prices to then-record highs of $2,200. This upgrade included four EIPs, like measures for reducing the costs that came with some transactions, increasing the expense that came with the launch of DoS attacks, and bundling several transactions into one transfer.

The most recent upgrade is Altair which was released in October. As a result, the price of ETH then reached a new ATH of more than $4,400.

Is getting to the point when we merge actually that difficult?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 04:37 AM PST

I understand these things need proper testing and POS has been working on test net for ages. I was wondering what's standing in the way of the actual merge right now ?

Is Bitcoin's Taproot upgrade a threat to Ethereum?

    Posted: 02 Dec 2021 09:40 PM PST

It's my understanding that one of the main things ETH had over BTC was that it allowed smart contracts whereas Bitcoin did not. Does the fact that Bitcoin can now support smart contracts via its Taproot upgrade in any way threaten Ethereum?

What are the things that make Ethereum superior to Bitcoin?

    Motley Fool doing clickbait headlines.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 10:44 AM PST

Asking Shiba Inu VS Ethereum: which cryptocurrency is right for you is just downright clickbait.

For their deceptive headlines and clearly biased material, Motley Fool has been thrown out of a few stock trading/investment subs, and now they're pushing out into crypto.

Every MF article is nothing more than a sales pitch for their newsletters.

The titles are clickbait, and the articles don't truly provide any information; instead, they encourage you to sign up for their service to learn more.

In the late 1990s, I was old enough to recall when MF provided excellent investment advice.

They mocked "advisors" who marketed newsletters, claiming that you could identify attractive stocks on your own without paying for a subscription service.

Then, in the mid-2000s, they shifted their business strategy to promoting a paid membership service.

After the GameStop debacle (which, to be honest, is far from done), they've made it quite plain how bad/corrupt they are.

Got an email entitled: "Action Required on your Coinbase account" looking for further KYC details

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 12:43 AM PST

This email looked dodgy from the start as it was addressed to "Alex" and had uncompleted links in it.

It seems to be from them based on the email headers (SPF/DKIM, etc.) but it's asking me to send personal information by email and upload sensitive documents to a 3rd party portal instead of via the Coinbase site. As someone who works in IT Security I think this is insecure unacceptable.

Are they likely to disable my account when I refuse to compromise my personal security for their half-assed KYC process?

Edit: I originally posted this in r/Coinbase not realising that it's controlled by them. The post wasn't approved and so I'm posting here for some independent advice.

    Ethereum/Bitcoin(protocol) flippeneing

    Posted: 03 Dec 2021 08:22 AM PST

Everyone always talks about the ETH/BTC (asset) Flippening . Why is no one talking about the Ethereum/Bitcoin (protocol) Flippening? I.e. the total amount of the assets being secured by the protocol.

For Bitcoin, the protocol basically just secures BTC. maybe there is an argument to be made that it secure STX?

On the other hand, Ethereum secures Ether, all of the ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155 tokens.

Currently BTC market cap is $1,058 Billion while Ether is "only" $530 Billion, leaving a difference of about $528 billion. A rough calculation of only the top ERC-20's by market cap comes to ~$420 billion(haha), all of the ERC-20s combined are probably in the range of $450-500 billion.

Then there are the ERC-721s (most NFTs) and ERC-1155s. Not sure if there is an easy way to find the market cap of these?

Why is no one tracking or talking about this? Thoughts?

TLDR: When people talk about the Flippening, they usually talk about ETH/BTC the asset, but maybe the more important thing to track is Ethereum/Bitcoin the protocol. The Ethereum/Bitcoin flippening is very close to, or may have already happened.

    Thanks
