Y'all need to stop talking about vitalik like he's some god Posted: 14 Oct 2021 05:51 PM PDT Its getting to feel a bit too cult like. Some of the art is just... Well it feels off and just weird. I don't want to downplay Vitalik, because he's fantastic, but he's also not some deity we need to worship all the time [link] [comments]

Someone sent me around $100 of ETH out of nowhere. Posted: 14 Oct 2021 02:59 PM PDT Here's their address, is this some sort of bot? They're sending ETH to 100s of people every hour it seems. 0x4ad64983349C49dEfE8d7A4686202d24b25D0CE8 [link] [comments]

Best strategy for $30k ETH purchase? Posted: 14 Oct 2021 07:01 PM PDT I recently transferred $30k in Roth funds to an IRA that allows me to purchase ETH The transfer took longer than I anticipated, and I missed the recent pullback to 3400 and now it's at 3750. I know the 'prudent' path is to DCA in, but I'm worried I'll be on sidelines while it climbs back to ATH and beyond. Any suggested strategies here? I also have a history of FOMO'ing all at once, only to see a major dip and kick myself! [link] [comments]

Crypto Community Not in agreement On Censorship & DeFi Posted: 14 Oct 2021 05:43 PM PDT Without just wantonly bashing bitcoin acolytes, what I might better ask: how do we get the overall crypto community to agree that web 3 is necessary, that a full stack uncensorable, unsurveillable, data private, end to end encrypted internet is necessary. I know certain die hard tribal parties concerned cannot be aggrieved. But I think having a huge core community this hostile to decentralized internet infrastructure development is going to become a huge issue. The obsession they have with bashing altcoins completely misses the point on why defi is here. There is virtually no solution with RSK smart contracts. You could never use one coin, let alone bitcoin to build the full stack distributed internet. Certain technologies we have don't even have a token, which is really the point in many ways. Tribalism over coins simply isn't a solution to the entire internet being an Nsa dragnet. If the internet isn't reengineered it is going to empower absolute tyrants that put the 20th century to shame. This is about fully reengineering the internet itself to be largely resistant against state actors. [link] [comments]
How do centralized exchanges detect deposits? Posted: 14 Oct 2021 03:46 PM PDT I have a decent tech background (SWE at a SaaS company) but this is something that has always perplexed me. How do big exchanges like Coinbase or Kraken know when a deposit arrives in their exchange? Surely they can't be querying the balance of every address they own, can they? My best guess is that they're watching new blocks as they get mined but I have no idea how you handle internal transactions that result from smart contracts like that. [link] [comments]

What happens to WETH after the merge? Posted: 14 Oct 2021 10:18 AM PDT I'm currently mining a little eth but due to payout restrictions, I'm getting paid in WETH on the Polygon network. So I wanted to see if I could convert them through the bridge to ETH which is possible, but for my ~30 dollars of WETH the gas fee will be around 350 dollars. Fuck that. I'm hoping to do that later when fees are a lot more manageable...after rollout of 2.0. So I was wondering, what happens after the merge - is it still possible to covert WETH to ETH? Or do I have to do that beforehand (it would be a losing deal and I can stop mining immediately then)? [link] [comments]
Making authoritarian regimes accountable using blockchain technology? Posted: 14 Oct 2021 08:42 AM PDT (DISCLAIMER The idea for this post comes from this post on r/ china, and I am sharing it with the permission of the original poster. The original post is about China, but I think the concept can be applied to any non democratic country.) So, here is the idea: to create a dapp (and maybe a DAO?) that would allow citizens of non democratic countries to vote online for the candidates and/or parties that they would want to see rule their country. In order to avoid persecution from the authoritarian regimes, the dapp would need to provide a system to screen the identity card of each voter for authenticity (and to avoid double voting) while protecting anonimity. It would need to make it impossible for anyone to see the IDs (either by encrypting the data or by deleting it and only saving the information needed to avoid double voting). I am no expert, but I think of something like what the SHA 256 algorithm does for Bitcoin. To be clear: the goal is not for the new elected government to be able to rule the country, but rather to deligitimize the dictatorship. For this to work it is essential that the elections are transparent and all citizens and parties from the country for which the elections are held are allowed to participate, including the ruling party, which should be formally invited to participate in the elections. I will now paraphrase the original post which explains how this system could be used to delegitimize a non elected authoritarian government (I partially modified the text to remove the references to China).
(end of the quote from the original post) Of course there is another possible outcome: the project does not get enough attention and not enough people vote or run for office to make the system useful as a political weapon against the authoritarian regime. Okay, now let me ask: do you think blockchain technology could/should be used for something like this? We can imagine a dapp for every non-democratic country which would allow the citizens from that country to voice their political opinion, which they cannot do in their own country. Or maybe there could be a single dapp that run the elections for the different countries separately. And should this system be organized as a DAO? Would there be advantages in doing that? I think making the system independent, decentralized and run by an algorithm would make it more resistant to blackmailing and censorship. Do you thing it would be a good idea? Would anyone be interested in working on this to make it a reality? I don't know the answers to these questions myself, but I think the topic is worth discussing. Generally speaking, I think that the potential political uses of blockchain technology (and more specifically DAOs) is still not fully understood, and it is barely discussed compared to some of its other practical applications. After all, Bitcoin was originally created by a libertarian, and true economic freedom cannot exist without political freedom. [link] [comments]
Crypto Inspired 24/7 Stock Trading Posted: 14 Oct 2021 12:25 PM PDT What are you thoughts on the stock market being open 24/7 for anyone to use? Currently you can do this through futures but you would have to wait for the market to open for your trades to settle, which suck. One issue people will bring up is liquidity, not enough people trading overnight so prices will be more volatile, but what if there was a solution to this problem, like what we have in crypto? Next time you hear news on the weekend about a certain stock you'll be able to act on it immediately instead of waiting till monday 9:30 am. This seems like a no brainer to me, what do yall think? Any well known travel agencies to book flights and hotels that accept crypto as payment method? Posted: 14 Oct 2021 08:33 AM PDT Hi, I am looking for well-known travel agencies that accept crypto/Coinbase as payment method. Do you know any? I've heard about Expedia for example but when I get to checkout I don't see the option. Thank you! [link] [comments]
