    Frequently Asked Questions

Where's the best place to buy ETH?

There are many centralized exchanges that support Ethereum. If you live in the US, the most popular exchanges are Coinbase, Gemeni and Kraken. Coinbase users can use Coinbase Pro for lower fees.

    When is Eth2 launching?

Eth2 is a marketing term used to represent a number of updates to Ethereum. The Eth2 proof-of-stake chain first launched in December 2020. "The Merge", which is the event that will fully switch Ethereum's consensus to proof-of-stake, is estimated to be ready in early 2022, although there is no exact timeline. Other updates, such as data shards, will follow that update.

Visit ethmerge.com to learn more about "The Merge".

Do I need to do anything to update to Eth2? Will Eth2 create a new token?

No, ETH holders never need to take any action to keep holding ETH. Ethereum users will be unaffected by the Eth2 upgrade. And the Eth2 updates will not create any new tokens.

How can I stake my ETH?

There are two ways that you can stake your ETH: by running your own validator, or providing your ETH to a staking pool.

    • Running your own validator requires a modern computer and 32 ETH. Visit /r/ethstaker for more details
    • Staking pools accept any amount of ETH. We recommend Lido or StakeWise

Why are Ethereum transaction fees so high?

Like most blockchains, Ethereum fees are determined by supply-and-demand. The large demand to use Ethereum has pushed transaction fees quite high (however, fees were just a few cents only 2 years ago). Fees are especially high during market volatility, and during NFT drops.

What is being done to lower Ethereum transaction fees?

Ethereum fees are reduced by using layer-2 rollups. Rollups are scaling solutions that allow for significantly cheaper transactions, while still maintaining Ethereum's security.

Additionally, Eth2's data shards will make rollups even cheaper.

While rollups are cutting-edge technology being actively developed, a number are already live on Ethereum mainnet. Visit l2beat.com to learn more about rollups.

What's the best wallet for Ethereum?

The most popular tool for using decentralized applications is Metamask. However, for security reasons, we recommend using a hardware wallet such as a Trezor or Ledger.

How much ETH is a good realistic target?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 08:13 PM PDT

Is 1 ETH enough to grow into a nice nest egg in 20 years? 5+? 10 or more?

ETH is still not extremely cost prohibitive to accumulate, but I think that it will become much harder in the next year. What do people here feel is a good target for someone in their early 30s to strive for very aggressively?

    Thoughts?

Do DAOs have already access to trusted computation and storage? I mean wouldn't it be actually really beneficial for the space if some trusted cloud provider were to allow Ethereum based DAOs to host applications?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 04:30 PM PDT

Think about it, right now there are a few cloud providers that have huge businesses at stake. So even though they are certainly an attack vector certain applications would be totally fine running on these trusted cloud platforms. The governance structure and payments could be 100% on-chain. Even though I'd prefer everything to be completely decentralized, if DAOs would be able to open an account at AWS and could pay them to host applications, we could have a whole new category of apps. It would be how app development should be, an internet company structure that is extremely secure (DAO) and trusted computation to run the actual app. Of course, it would only work reasonably well if several cloud providers were to compete to host the DAOs application.

The simple fact that this is not yet possible is really insane.

    Or am I missing something?

The Most Interesting Use Cases for Ethereum (Hint: not its use as a currency)

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 08:02 AM PDT

One of the most common misconceptions in this space is that currency is the primary use case for crypto. Some people believe, for example, that ETH must succeed as a currency for it to ultimately succeed. This is a common belief, especially among newcomers, but even among people who have been in the space for years. I'd like to help dispel this myth.

    ETH's primary use cases are:

    1. as pristine trustless collateral used in DeFi
    2. as a capital asset (staking)
    3. as a confiscation-resistant and inflation-resistant store of value (EIP1559 / the burn / triple halvening)
    4. as a commodity (gas for transactions)

Note, these are the use cases for ETH. The use cases for Ethereum (the network) are vast and cannot be completely enumerated in a post like this.

While ETH is used today as a currency for NFTs, that is because NFTs grew up within the Ethereum ecosystem. The use case of currency will likely persist and grow, but it is the least interesting aspect of ETH.

The future of the decentralized web: Community Websites, Tokenized Websites, and WNFTs

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 10:19 AM PDT

We just published an article with proposals for three kinds of futuristic websites that can only be implemented in the decentralized web (using ENS+IPFS):

    - Community website: a website that is owned by a DAO, but the members of the DAO are people from the website community.

    - Tokenized website: a website that owns an ERC-20 token.

    - WNFT: Website NFTs. A website where some areas in the website are controlled by an NFT. This literally "breaks" the website into parts. This kind of trick can only exist in the dWeb.

Would love to hear your feedback about it!

    Gas trackers once gasnow disappears

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 08:48 PM PDT

With gasnow.org going to be extinct in a few days, is there another gas tracking site that gives rough estimates on how much swap should cost or add liquidty should cost? The only other way I know of is just to look through etherscan transactions , that doesn't seem like the most optimal way though.

Squid Game Marble Contract - Should I deploy it?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 01:59 PM PDT

Hey all -- I created a marble game that works like Squid Game. After paying entry, there will be several rounds where you pick even or odd marbles until there's one winner left (at which point the eth automatically gets transferred to you).

My question is, it's expensive to deploy and operate, so would you be interested in playing?

    actual gwei vs. Coinbase Wallet?

    Posted: 11 Oct 2021 04:52 PM PDT

Gastracker (for example) is telling me this transaction will cost 88 gwei (fastest) when i go to do it in coinbase wallet it tells me that 88 is too low and that 120 is normal, 130 fastest. obviously i want to save gas but dont want my transaction stuck @ $55/swap. anyone have experience with this? TIA!
