RaspiBlitz Discontinuing Litecoin and Litecoin Lightning Node Support with v.1.8.0

    Posted: 26 Sep 2021 03:48 PM PDT

Don't know if we have anyone in this sub who runs a RaspiBlitz Litecoin server, but they will likely be doing away with Litecoin support in their v1.8.0 update.

IMO Bitcoin is celebrating victory after victory on the global stage (El Salvador, Twitter) via adoption built on Lightning Network functionality. It's not a bad plan to ride the Bitcoin devs into global adoption via building more Litecoin use cases on Lightning.

The first Lightning Network transaction was made with Litecoin between Strike's Jack Mallers and Charlie Lee.

I understand that fees are already low on L1 Litecoin network and L2 just isn't needed right now, maybe never. But think 2-5 years down the road. Where will Litecoin be if devs start building out Lightning functionality that can plug and play where Bitcoin is succeeding? Legal tender consideration, large financial and business institutions, the lot.

Litecoiners should lament the loss of this option to run a similar node to what Umbrel has put together for Bitcoiners to build Lightning channels with a very small investment in hardware ($250). It's just sitting there waiting for us to build this out. I myself would be open to maintaining channels, but I am not a programmer so I'm not much help writing code to maintain the RaspiBlitz image.

Luckily, a fork of the current version was created so that if someone with the skills to maintenance the Litecoin RaspiBlitz image emerges, then they may allow it to stay on the v1.8.0 release. We'd need to convince the Bitcoin devs that we have someone who can run with it. Please send me a private message if you are a programmer interested in taking this on and I'll get you to the information you need to take a look.
