Landlord inspection and what to do with mining rigs

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 02:11 AM PDT

I currently live in rented accommodation in the UK. I have a landlord inspection coming up where the landlord is visiting to see the state of the property midway during my tenancy. I have several rigs in one the rooms and am wondering what I should do with the rigs for the inspection?

I am thinking that I will tidy my mining room and have the rigs turned off for the inspection so the heat and noise from the room are normal and just explain that the rigs are some kind of super computer that I use for fun.

Is it likely the landlord will request I get rid of the rigs or don't use them because of fire risk?

Should I spend a few hours packing the rigs up in boxes or will it be fine leaving the rigs out but turned off?

Edit: I pay for my own electricity directly with my power supplier

Why would ASIC actually sell their products

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 03:30 AM PDT

Why would companies sell mining devices like ASICs instead of just mining themselves? It can also apply to GPUs. Wouldn't it be more profitable in the long term to just mine? Sorry, it may seem like a silly question but I would like to know your opinion on the subject.

My gaming/mining rig. 3090 for gaming and mining and a 3080 to mine while I game.

    Torn Between GPUs vs Asics

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 08:17 AM PDT

I have ~2 GH/s of GPU rigs mining ETH paid off. I'm going to invest a decent capital to expand my mining operation. I'm torn between buying Asics to mine BTC or just increase my GPU hashrate with more GPU rigs.

What would be a better investment in your opinion?

Only one way to try it out

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:37 PM PDT

Front and side glass panels removed. 1660Ti (51c, H.S. 65c) + 1060 (58c, H.S. 65c) 45MH/s, 142W. All spare parts build, from before the whole shortage. Just experimenting.

Ticking sound on EVGA RTX 3070 XC3 ULTRA

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 08:57 AM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I've ran into a problem with 3 out of 6 of my 3070, they are making this annoying ticking sound while mining. Ive made a short video of my issue HERE.

I'm running my rig with standard overclocks and fans at 70%. Cards are running cool (52-56 degrees Celsius) and hashing great on ETH.

According to my limited troubleshooting it only occurs while mining and if I unset my flight sheet, bump up the rpms on all fans it does not seem to be happening at all. I've also taken out one of the cards in question to see if perhaps there is a cable getting in the way of any of the fans and they all seem mechanically sound. It's also worth mentioning that it is not a constant issue it seems to be happening randomly (at least I can't notice any pattern to it) and individually for each card.

Has anyone else ran into this problem and managed to solve it?

Im considering issuing an RMA with EVGA but I don't know if they won't be too fussy about it. From what I've read they do not honor their warranty if a gpu is subjected to crypto mining. I have a feeling they won't believe me if I say that I'm using all 3 cards for gaming 😂

    btc-t37 mobo wont detect gpu?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 08:48 AM PDT

Any trick to these boards? Have it running on just server board gpu connected and spins up fine with mobo then doesn't get detected on windows/smos/hiveos.

Connected another power cable mobo and running hdmi off mobo itself. Any advice?

Any reason to not run my GPU fans at 100%?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2021 08:19 AM PDT

So i finally manually adjusted the fan on my 3070 non lhr today. Been mining on it for about 9 months now. I get 61Mh/s usually at around 66C.

Put the fans to 100% and now im down to 54C!

Is there any reason not to? Or do people usually max out at like 75%?

How do I keep track of mining income and taxes with Quickbooks?

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:46 PM PDT

I'm using quickbooks to track mining expenses such as hardware and electricity usage.

Is there any easy way to have quickbooks automatically track mining income and taxes? For example, tracking payouts from the mining pool to an exchange wallet (as USD at the time of the payout), and tracking trades from crypto to USD.

Edit: This would be for tracking ETH and RVN mining income

Sanity check: powering 3070 Ti cards

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 10:01 PM PDT

Hi, I recently got a hold of 3070 Ti's. Two are rated at 290W and come with a 12-pin slot (the boxes come with a 2x8 pin to 12pin adapter), and two are rated at 310W and come with 2x8 pin slots.

The guide in the FAQ shows that the PCI-E cables are rated for 288W.

Given this, it seems like I can only do:

    • Two separate 1x8 pin from psu to power the 12-pin cards combined using the adapter
    • Two separate 1x8 pin from psu to power the 2x8-pin cards

This requires a minimum of 8 slots just for the cards, and another two to power 4 risers. Is there a better way to power this? Would it be a good idea to power this using 2x ATX or should I go with a single server PSU?

    Inline fans vs Aircon

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:14 PM PDT

Hi all. I have about 40 GPU's I want to cool. It is winter where I am but as we approach summer I need to be able to cool them. Obviously it costs less power to use inline fans and exhaust the heat. I was wondering about the merits of going the air-conditioning route and re-circulating the cool air inside.

GPU Brand New? Think again, Check to make sure!

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 10:18 AM PDT

It seems these returns are getting clever; They are not being checked and resold as brand new.

If you have purchased your graphics card brand new please check the listing is "Brand New". On arrival apart from the obvious check the warranty stickers are still in place by the manufacture.

Check and inspect for the following:

    • Dust and debris within the heatsink. This is a sign that it has been used.
    • Inspect the connectors for both display headers and fan connectors. Check for damage and bent pins. Use a magnifying glass if need be.
    • Check all visible screws; Do they look damaged? Signs of incorrect screwdrivers used? Does the GPU shroud have the little plastic covers?

TLDR: Purchased a brand new 2080 TI 6 months ago from Amazon; It's an amazon return missing warranty sticker, damaged Fan/RGB connector and screws that have been tampered with.

Discovered this after maintaining the card due to observed poor performance, cleaning the dust etc.

Effect of China video game limit on GPU price/availability

    Posted: 31 Aug 2021 10:19 AM PDT

As miners, we're all guilty of monitoring the salvage value of our equipment & checking price/availability of new gpu's for potential expansion. With china's new law limiting video game usage to 3 hours a week for minors, do we think this will affect gpu price/availability?

I can't speculate on the gpu demand of this demographic or how the limit will affect that demand, so I am opening it up for discussion. I'm hoping someone well-versed on the topic can provide information for the betterment of everyone in the sub.

Excluding the 3060, does the driver version matter much with LHR cards?

If so, which driver works best for you?
