Changed thermal pads, great results! (EVGA 3080 FTW3 ULTRA) Posted: 03 Aug 2021 04:15 AM PDT Edit: this is regarding mining ETH Long story short: I had -> memclock@1200 / core@-200 / pl@60% / fan-3x@75%, which gave -> 228w / memjunc@100-102 / 95-100MH/s I now have (tested for 48 hours straight) -> memclock@1962 / core@110 / pl@61%/ fan-3x@75%, which gives me -> 232W / memjunc@88 / stable 107MH/s Both were with the card inside the case (NZXT H510). I got Gelid Ultimate pads, 0,5-1-2-3mm pads. I first followed this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/kpwygp/evga_3080_ftw3_ultra_full_thermal_pad_and_paste/ But when I tried what he suggested, I could clearly see that 1 and 2mm were not thick enough. Upon closing, I could clearly see the pads weren't touching the heatsinks completely. Also according to EVGA's own post, the pads are all above 2mm (for the mem) and not 2mm. So I took a gamble and added 0,5mm (which is why I bought that to be safe) to all pads. The only worry I had then, is that the GPU die itself wouldn't touch the heatsink, since it's a little thicker than EVGA. Currently my GPU die temp sits steady at 60 degrees while mining, so I think it hasn't affected it (still need to test while gaming to be sure). Also I added 3mm pads to the back. PSA (EVGA) users: turn OFF Precision X1 server! Posted: 03 Aug 2021 04:23 AM PDT So I got my new EVGA 3080 FTW3 Ultra last week and starting to mess with it for mining. I replaced my Gigabyte 2070 Super with it. At first I was using only Afterburner. Then I installed Precision X1, because i wanted to changed the RGB lights. Then I noticed you can also OC with it, like Afterburner. So I decided to just use X1 since I need that anyway. I noticed that when my display was on, I was getting hashrates around 70, instead of 100. First I thought, could be the programs I'm running. I closed all programs and made sure GPU acceleration was off at the programs that were on. I still noticed lower hashrates with display on. Which didn't make sense, because I knew I had 100MH/s with the display on at the beginning. So then I thought: let's make my 2070S the main one by connecting the display (I use that one outside my case with a riser cable). I saw that the 3080 was giving 100MH/s, but then suddenly my 2070S was giving around 25MH/s instead of 42! Which it never ever did before. I was going crazy and then I killed off X1 and X1 server: I INSTANTLY saw my 2070S jump back to 42MH/s with the display ON! I started X1 again, still had the normal hashrate. I started X1 server, bam there goes my hashrate. Killed off X1 server (only server) and bam it went back up. So for any (EVGA) users out there kill X1 server if you use Precision X1 for OC's! This applies to all cards btw! [link] [comments]

What I've learned over the past few months Posted: 02 Aug 2021 10:35 AM PDT I've been mining for a few months now and thought I'd share some of the troubles/thoughts I've had in the hopes to help out new people or maybe anyone who's had the same questions I have. I'm by no means an experienced miner yet (this isn't financial advice, just my 2c) and have a lot to learn. Feel free to comment and correct me anywhere as needed :)
I started my Journey around May of 2021 when crypto was going quite well and I had just finished building a killer gaming rig to play Sea of Thieves and other games with the boys. Turns out an RTX 3090 while quite expensive, pulls in quite the profit while mining as well! A quick google search and NiceHash seemed to be the go-to for newbies with single GPUs. After seeing those first few $$ flow on there and with the ease it was set up, I was hooked! Since I have a desk job with some spare time on my hands, I devoted the next few months to research (mostly on my own time) and browsing discord groups/twitch/youtube streams during work hours to soak up as much information as I possibly could.
Note: I've always been a form over function guy so if it costs a few extra $$ to get a better looking rig I'll almost always go that route. What's a few extra days to ROI eh? - Motherboards I sourced mine from kijiji, (for US folks that would be craigslist) amazon, ebay, newegg, and anywhere where the price was right. I bought two motherboards initially as I planned on setting up an Eth rig and one for alternative coins. MSI Z390-A was a great board with 6x pcie slots that was right in my budget. - CPU Mistake #1 I made was to not check compatibility with my motherboard. I assumed socket 1151 meant any mobo and cpu with the same # would be compatible. After some time wondering why my G3930 didn't post I figured out the issue. Duh! I bought a cheap i5 that was compatible and later on a second mobo to work with my 3930. - Ram 8gb is recommended for windows, and it's cheap enough online. Laggy mining rigs can be quite annoying to deal with so I'd recommend 8gb either way. You may get by with 4 though. - Frame Remember my form over function comment? I went straight for the metal ebay frames. At the time of purchase a 12 GPU frame was $110 and 6 GPU frame was $60. Hanging GPUs from racks works great as well as the good old home made wooden/aluminum ones but make sure if you're using 2x PSU's you get a supporting frame! I personally prefer the clean look of a professionally made frame. - Power I never tried server PSUs though if I did it all over again I'd definitely explore that option. Through kijiji I found 2x 1000 watt ATX PSUs which would be slightly overkill for my setup but that's what I'm going for. I had to order extra PCIe cables from AliExpress (ebay might have some too). Make sure if you do buy ATX units to check how many PCIE slots they have. 6-8 is recommended or else you won't be able to plug in all your cards, especially the ones using 3x 8 pin slots. Note: ATX PSUs are designed to run at 80% power or less, any more and they'll have reduced longevity. Server PSUs can run at 100% capacity for years without issue. Make sure you have surge protectors on all your rigs and if you're getting close to what a normal 15 amp breaker can handle, maybe it's time to check with an electrician to get an upgrade. Amazon keeps putting the 1200W ROG Thor on sale for $300ish which is a steal considering it has 8x pcie slots (you do have to order extra cables as it only includes a few). I currently have two of these on various rigs. - Storage Anything works but SSDs are recommended. I used a standard sata SSD for my first rig but found some cheap M.2 drives which is obviously a better choice for less cable managing and a cleaner look (remember, form over function for me? ;) Just make sure you get a minimum of 240gb if you're running a bunch of cards as you have to generate a page file larger than the GPU memory size (ig. 1x 3060 needs 12gb minimum) - GPUs Ahh, the real money makers. These were extremely tough to find and still are if you're looking. Here's a few options for you if you're in the market. I highly recommend the Warlock3d discord or twitch for getting notifications, I nabbed at least 5x gpus from following the chats there.
I'm currently running an ETH rig with 6x 3080s (various brands). I'm mining Ergo on another machine with 1x 3080ti, 1x 1660 Super, and 2x 3060s. My gaming and editing rig has 1x 3070 and 2x 2090s which also mine Eth. I'm basically at 1GH/s on Eth and 480MH/s on Ergo. - Cooling If you want to stay small scale or keep the noise down then 120ml fans on the mining frame are ok but with the super hot GDDR6X temps on the 3080s and 3090s I'd recommend a larger box fan blasting that heat away. I haven't had to repad any of my cards with the exception of my 3090 founders card which resides in a closed case. Aim for 95C or lower (preferably sub 90C) for memory temps. - Software This is a long and lengthy subject but I'll skim over the brief points.
- Budget Everyone's budget is different but it's important to record and track costs from the start! I have a nice spreadsheet with all of mine recorded. Set your max budget and stick to it! I haven't cashed anything out as I'm in it for the long run and I strongly believe crypto will only grow. I may be wrong, but time will tell. This is a long term investment for me. If you're curious though, ROI is still a ways away for my but I'm getting there fast! - Hashrate Silicone lottery plays a lot but here's my numbers: ETH: 3090s are at 124MH/s, 3080s are at 100MH/s, 1660s is at 31 MH/s ERG: 3080ti at 270MH/s, 3060 LHR at 105MH/s - Closing thoughts Congrats if you made it this far! If you have any questions on overclocking and have the same cards as me, feel free to comment or DM me! Sorry if this was a little long as I'm not good with long write-ups and just wanted to share my thoughts. Happy mining! [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Aug 2021 05:15 PM PDT Hello all, I have no experience whatsoever with mining crypto, until yesterday when I spent hours looking through different programs and methods and eventually I settled on nice hash on my personal pc (rx 570 4gb). My first question is if there is a general consensus on the profitability of small scale gpu mining in the future. I've heard about ethereum switching to POS system, so I guess I'm just wondering if there's potential for any form of gpu mining in the future and it still being profitable. My second question is about buying a new "rig". I saw a laptop online with the screen broken off but the main body in good condition for $400 and it has a GTX 1060 6gb gpu. Is that an ok deal? I plugged it into a profit calculator and it looks like I would break even for it in 6-8 months, which seems alright. Also I'm in college dorms, so I don't pay electricity for at least another 6 months or so. [link] [comments]
What are my options for quiet server case gpu mining? Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:45 PM PDT I am focused most on silence, and I know that server cases are inherently loud lol but I plan to at least replace the fans with Noctua A12x25-PWM. I know about minebox and octominer, but what other reputable companies are out there? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Aug 2021 08:17 PM PDT I have some spare parts lying around and I'd like to throw together a rig. (1060 6Gb, 1660s, 3060 unlockable, 750 watt gold atx, etc). I have everything except the mobo. Looking for one that will recognize and be able to run all those cards at the same time. Any suggestions would be fantastic, preferably without risers. Thank you! Anyone here mine with a 3090 on water? What’re your temps like? Posted: 02 Aug 2021 04:12 PM PDT Just want to discuss and compare really. I built my first custom loop recently to put my Gigabyte Vision OC 3090 on water I man attempt to reduce noise and temps (so far so good however I do still need to replace some thermal pads as I ran out of 1.5mm) so would be interested to hear what tips people have or things to take in to consideration. Also any ideas on how to mount a block to the backplate? The one I got for my card doesn't fit so I'm looking at another way to mount it, would it work just resting on top of the thermal pads on the backplate or does it need the pressure pressing down on the pads to be most efficient? What are AMD's best mining cards that only require one 8-pin? Posted: 02 Aug 2021 05:28 PM PDT Some manufacturers have different pin requirements for the same model like nvda, not sure if it's the same case with AMD, I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to amd but would like to get some cards but I am only looking for the best and/or most efficient ones that only need 1 8 pin. 3060 ti is the "best" nvda card, non lhr, that has 8 pin, but it seems like the amd equivalent RX 6700 XT requires two 8 pins. Thanks for advice! [link] [comments]
