Testing risers difference (006 vs 009)

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 12:10 AM PDT

Yesterday I had the chance to test 2 different risers (006 and 009) on a 1660s. It may sound odd, but the difference I notice is just watts-based. Here's the breakdown:

GPU in the PCIe 16x slot of the mobo: 67/68W @ ~31.8 MH/s

    GPU in a v006 riser: 72/73W @ ~31.8 MH/s

    GPU in a v009 riser: 67/68W @ ~31.8 MH/s

Same MH/s, different watts absorbed (and, touching the foam of the 006, it is way hotter than the 009's)

Somewhere I read that 006s "eat" 5W while others don't but, since it was only a single comment, I wanted to try this myself and - for what I can say - this seems to be true.

Somebody else wants to try to see it this is random or not?

    Maxsun

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 08:12 AM PDT

I am trying to get reviews about Maxsun Geforce GPU's. I had an email to say they were now selling directly in the US. I can see they a proper AIB producer but would like some user reviews if possible. Website is www.maxsun.biz

    Thank-you!

    Properly Undervolting in HiveOS?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 07:54 AM PDT

So I lately switched over from Ubuntu to Hive OS because I gave up on fixing the drivers for my 3 AMD and 3 Nvidia GPUs to work all at once - and Hive OS magically fixed this issue; I got all of them to work and now I wanna do some optimization.

Now I'm wondering how i am able to properly undervolt my cards (and maybe overclock with caution). MSI Afterburner would be my choice on Windows, but how do you perform this on a Linux kernel system?

What would be a good practice to do this properly?

Also in the Hive OS interface, I read something about setting double the values to overclocking as you would see in Windows, but I can't get this info back even tho I searched for it.. anyone knows what that means??

    Thanks in advance !!

ethermine.org suddenly not being resolved by DNS server

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 07:03 AM PDT

My rig suddenly stopped because my DNS server cannot resolve the ethermine.org name. I'm using Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4) but with auto DNS (that resolves to a different DNS server) it's also being unresolved. Anyone else facing this issue?

Any ideas how I can remove the screws from GPU backplate?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 06:13 AM PDT

Was ready to replace thermal pads on my rtx 3080 but fucking Gigabyte decides to use proprietary screws which are nearly impossible to remove. I'm at lost for words and feel cheated after buying this gpu. https://i.imgur.com/5wcvXLX.jpg

B250 mining rig bought second hand shit the bed after only 7 months. Sigh

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 05:37 PM PDT

Run a 30 card farm, really disappointed with most the second hand stuff I've bought, I'm getting my money's worth out of it, but the time it takes to repair and replace things isn't worth it IMO.

Moving towards buying brand new equipment now, z490a pro MSI boards with 10100F CPU and Kingston ram on the way being express shipped.

To anyone else out there looking to save a few dollars buying used equipment, remember your time and emotional stress levels are valuable. Just throw the extra money and get the new stuff with a warranty. Trust me

Zombie mode still effective with 4G cards?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2021 02:14 AM PDT

I am putting together a very old school rig with multiple full x16 pcie slots to take advantage of my humble amount of RX 4g cards. I am not sure if it is worth doing though. My RX 470 8g card is chugging along while the 4g cards are bring in 30%-50% of the 8g. Is zombie still evening the playing field or is even that starting to fall behind? I read that as the epochs turn, the zombie performance will continually decrease. What is the current state?

    Cheers!

isolating worker(s) that cause bsod in windows with trex? Or possibly psu imbalances and restarts?

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 08:40 PM PDT

    I have 5 workers and 5 nvidia cards of different flavors (3 x 3080 and a 1080 and 1080ti) and using t-rex.

I can go 3 days without issue, then suddenly the pc restarts (not always a bsod as far as i can tell, nothing in the mini dump). I'm running this with a riser card multipler (that powers 2 cards) and 3 riser cards for the rest on an asus z170a board.

I'm running 2 x 1200 watt platnum power supplies with an add2psu device connecting them. I've balanced the loads (split) across both psu's.

I assumed the issue is just too high an oc on one of the workers but now i'm not so sure (the other day i had reboots just moving the mouse, but since then i moved the loads around to be more even between psu's and i thought i had it beat).

Anyone have any tips on how to isolate this.

I've tried doing the log file option with trex but doesnt help much (nothing is ever recorded and i'm not sure if the latest log file is the last one that caused the crash or not, if it even is).

I do notice lately (never before), i now see this error every few seconds in each worker:

warn nvml cant get gpu # error 999

[REQUEST] Vbios from Asus GTX 1660 super TUF gaming OC.

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 01:44 PM PDT

Need vbios file, can be easily read and extracted using GpuZ software, I lost the vbios after I flashed other version for testing and now every other version makes card unstable.

Need file from TUF Gaming OC, not from regular version card.

I will happily donate to whoever sends it to me, my card is technically dead right now.

    Thanks!

Stupid Question time: can the chinese knockoff GPUs actually be used to mine? (hear me out)

    Posted: 07 Jul 2021 09:49 AM PDT

i haven't asked a stupid question on reddit in quite a while so i'm overdue:

Before you just discount this and reply - hear me out:

I got wrapped up in the hype a few years ago and bought a bunch of "4GB" cards from Wish - because at the time, you couldn't beg, borrow, or steal a GPU (and becuase they've been in the box for a couple years, I forget if they were supposed to be NVIDIA or AMD so I'll have to find them again) BUT - i put them in my rig and everytime i would launch the mining app, it would crash the system - found some application that told me more detailed specs about them - and found out that they were "programmed" to be 4GB cards but only had 1GB of actual memory on-board. - so my stupid question is this: is there a way to take those cards and "unbreak" them so that they actually will report the correct amount of RAM that the card has - i figure it might be good for things like monero or other low intensity coins - i assume they would need to be flashed somehow - but that's a little above my paygrade so I'm reaching out to the experts of the community to see if this is even possible (don't care how feasible or how much of a waste of time it might be, just so long as i can get my moneys worth out of them instead of them just sitting in the box)

where should I start? what app would be able to do this? how would I know what firmware would be needed to accomplish this? (if any) (I'm assuming that app i used which i forgot what it was, could tell me more important details of the card that could aid in this task?

yes i know it's a waste of time - but since crypto is down, this seems like an ideal time to get these cheap cards working to see if i can earn my money back on them.

any ideas on where I should start with this daunting task?
