I bought a bike using ETH today.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 05:47 PM PDT

It was bought from a relative so not quite the in store purchase I hope for. But I bought a bike for 0.5ETH. It cost me about £0.20 in transaction fees, which on a £600 bike is nothing.

I helped him set up a wallet, scanned the QR code, and sent him the money. It showed as confirmed on his wallet less than 30 seconds later and we were both happy

Honestly, I just wanted to share the story because I used ETH in meatspace for the first time and it made me so happy to finally do

Is there any incentive to staking ETH right now vs when the chains come together? Do you earn more right now vs later? Like an early adopter incentive?

More just curious. I wish I had enough where this was a possibility.

When will EIP-1559 be launched on the main net?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 05:04 PM PDT

I've read about the success of the test net and how over 85,000 ethers were burned. There are 2 more scheduled test nets, that is Goerli and Rinkbey and they are scheduled at the end of this month and the beginning of next month. Each of them are supposed to last only 24 hours.

At the same time, I've looked at the inflation rate of ether and it is currently at 4.4%. The ether supply has actually increased to close to 116.5 million.

Interested in learning the fundamentals of defi?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 02:49 PM PDT

Hi all, I have been publishing quite some articles over the past few months explaining various defi related subjects.

Because defi is becoming increasingly popular, I wanted to help new investors out to understand the fundamentals of defi. Of course this helped me to learn new stuff about defi too.

So far, I have received great feedback from r/cryptocurrency! If you're interested, you can find the articles here.

    Geth 1.10.4 pruning

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 10:10 AM PDT

I was running geth 1.10.2 on my RPi4 with the parameters --txlookuplimit=0 --snapshot=false to minimize cpu load. However since my 2TB SSD is now about 79% full for some reason, I decided to make a snapshot before pruning. So I updated to geth 1.10.4 and took these parameters out, which enabled snapshot generation by default. However the snapshot generation for some reason seems to take for ever, it's been running for over a week now. Is this normal behavior? Anyone experienced this on a RPi4? I'm afraid that if it takes like a month or so, I will be forced to delete all chaindata and resync from scratch since the disk will eventually become full. See geth log below:

    Jun 20 22:25:47 validator geth[141868]: INFO [06-20|22:25:47.392] Aborting state snapshot generation root=fc3c41..3de29d at=000218..fce2a8 accounts=4480 slots=4963 storage=559.52KiB elapsed=30h30m53.595s eta=954845h59m47.71s Jun 20 22:25:47 validator geth[141868]: INFO [06-20|22:25:47.393] Resuming state snapshot generation root=de9fba..9e6921 at=000218..fce2a8 accounts=4480 slots=4963 storage=559.52KiB elapsed=30h30m53.597s eta=954845h59m47.71s Jun 20 22:25:47 validator geth[141868]: INFO [06-20|22:25:47.488] Imported new chain segment blocks=1 txs=221 mgas=14.985 elapsed=55.112s mgasps=0.272 number=12,667,033 hash=f400dc..2934de age=1d1h42m dirty=63.90MiB

after a few days, ETA became a negative number which is very weird. Also noticed the "at=", "accounts=", "slots=" and "storage=" fields remain the same all the time (not sure if this is normal).

A question about exchanges and wallets.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 06:50 AM PDT

I have multiple exchanges I use to buy different types of crypto. I only have 2 wallets I use currently. Are my coins at a greater risk being on only 2 different wallets? Would it be better if I keep some on exchanges? Would it be better if I opened more wallets and spread them evenly? I've always seen people say never to leave your coins on an exchange but what is the reason? Thanks
