Put rigs in boxes to not heat the room

    Posted: 29 May 2021 08:29 PM PDT

    Is this setup ok?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 08:32 AM PDT

I have two 3070s in one system (both plugged into motherboard).

I have an add2psu https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077VQL5NT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and am powering a separate power supply there. The second power supply is ONLY plugged into one of the 3070s (as the main power supply doesn't have enough for another 2 x 8 pins). I heard that this is potentially dangerous (my own research gives me conflicting ambiguous answers). I'm not using any risers (yet) so is this a problem?

I've been running for nearly 3 weeks now no problems so I am just trying to be cautious.

How to fixate heat sink on 3090FE

    Posted: 30 May 2021 07:30 AM PDT

    Good afternoon

I would like to add some Heat sinks on the back plate of my 3090FE. I was wondering how do I fix them? Do I simply put them on top? Do I have to use some kind of thermalglue?

Also any recommendation on which heat sink to use? I will be removing my Noctua DH 15 for an AIO to make place for the heat sink.
ps: I already changed the thermal pads and it dropped the VRAM temps from 110C and throttling to 96C and no throttling. However with the summer around the corner I see the VRAM temp of my GPU increasing and thus want to add some Heat sinks :)

Mining rig prefab choices (amazon etc) that can do a full atx board and dual power supplies?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 08:46 AM PDT

As of this moment for my dual 3080 and single 1080ti build + full size atx board (a plex media server i'm going to dual purpose), im leaning towards dual psu's. I already have an 850 watt gold 80 msi, and it seems worst case this layout needed around 1100 watts at worst peak.

That said, the rig i ordered off amazon, may or may not work with both of these psus (sounds as if one would hang off the edge and be sideways, fine if so i guess)?
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08XJGG2YX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I'm going worst case this one doesnt work out, can anyone recommend another out there that would definitely fit the full atx and dual psus plus 3 to 4 cards on top?

    Thanks in advance

Founders edition vs regular? Efficiency on 3090 vs 3080?

    Posted: 30 May 2021 08:11 AM PDT

Was wondering which is better for mining because I've heard founders edition has higher temperatures.

Also when people say 3080 is more efficient than 3090 what is actually meant by that? Is it that at retail price 3080s roi is better? because when I've calculated on whattomine it is not, furthermore the same way that they have limited older gpus wouldn't it be good to assume that the 3080 will be potentially limited before the 3090?

    Thanks

Gpu mining rig with 3 GPUs, minimal psu? Afterburner, trex?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 05:25 PM PDT

I'm building my first gpu rig. Right now with a 3080 ftw3 and a 1080ti. I'll likely add another 3080 within 1 month.

I'm using my plex media server as the base of operations a 6700k with z170 Asus board, enough slots to use three 1x risers and a rig like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08XJGG2YX?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image

I'm hoping with this rig I can at least have my nvme expansion cards plugged in (enough height)

These are the risers I was going with https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B08Z44VY6F?ref=ppx_pt2_mob_b_prod_image

As of now I have a single modular psu of 850 watts.

Im pretty sure just the 1080 and 3080 are fine with 850 watt.

For the 3 cards I'm guessing just a 1000 watt would do the trick?

My other question is how to use something like afterburner to set the limits on all 2 or 3 cards?

Right now fir one card I'm using trex, I'm guessing I may need something else with two or 3?

EDIT: I've opted to switch to the seasonic focus 1000 watt 80 gold unit https://www.bestbuy.com/site/seasonic-focus-gx-1000-1000w-80-gold-psu-full-modular-fan-control-in-fanless-silent-cooling-mode-10-yr-warranty-black/6414258.p?skuId=6414258 (though it looks like this one only comes with 3 pcie cables)

EDIT: i think this one is a better deal https://www.bestbuy.com/site/evga-g...ar-power-supply-black/6209800.p?skuId=6209800 (evga supernova has 6 pcie at least)

Should handle all 3 just fine.

    Thanks in advance

Using Server PSUs on Normal American Wiring?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 02:43 PM PDT

I purchased 2 1200W HP Power Supplies for use in building a rig. They are rated for Max Output @ 110V-120V: 900W. My question is, can I use two of these connected to the same circuit in my house without any sort of power issues with wiring?

Is this dangerous? What is some general advice for using PSUs and mining?

Edit: This question is based on US/American Wiring

rtx 3070 not detected on PCIE 4x slot - how can I utilise this slot?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 12:05 PM PDT

    Hello hello

I have an ASROCK x570 Taichi AM4 ATX Mobo and 4 GPUs:

    1. rtx 3080
    2. rtx 3070 x 2
    3. 1660 Super

The Mobo has 5 PCIE slots:

    1. Slot 1 is 16 slots | 16 lanes = used for rtx 3080 (no problem)
    2. Slot 2 is 4 slots | 1 lane = used for 1660 Super (no problem)
    3. Slot 3 is 16 slots | 8 lane = used for rtx 3070 (no problem)
    4. Slot 4 is 4 slots | 1 lane = not used for anything (no problem)
    5. Slot 5 is 16 slots | 4 lanes = used for rtx 3070 (PROBLEM)

When I start windows, I can see that the device manager recognises all 4 GPUs but there is a exclamation mark on one of the 3070s. When I click on it, it says the usual error code 43. MSI Afterburner doesnt detect it at all and indeed phoenix miner doesnt detect it either.

What I have done so far:

    • I have the latest nvidia drivers (hence why the 3080 and the other 3070 works fine)
    • I have set the PCIE settings on the BIOS to GEN3 (prior to this, none of the GPUs were recognised via a riser)

My guess is that Slot 5 (4 lanes) doesnt have enough bandwidth capability to handle a 3070 (since Slot 3, which is an 8 lane slot, does)

Does anyone know how I can resolve this problem? Is there anyway I can make Slot 5 "more powerful"?

(note I have read the PCIE wiki and the GPU build samples on this subs wiki but there is nothing that addresses this problem)

Stale shares on LAN connected laptop

    Posted: 29 May 2021 12:04 PM PDT

I have a Asus FX516 PR laptop and it's been mining just fine. Not ideal, but have some fun since I not using it for work right now. Anyways, line I said it mining fine with cool temps but I keep getting stale share even within a few minutes. I've got all the drivers update using driver easy and still get stale share. It's wired to the switch I have in my living room. It didn't make a difference if it was on wifi or wired.

    Best/safest riser cards for mining?

    Posted: 29 May 2021 10:58 AM PDT

Can anyone recommend any reliable riser cards for mining? The ones i've spotted on amazon seem to have many saying that they burnt their gpu etc, despite high ratings?

I have a z170a asus motherboard, for now just putting a few cards in the motherboard (like a 3080 for starters) but i envision getting some risers and moving cards to an external rig. I assume all i need is a slot that is 1x, so i can use the 16x slots as well as any of the x1 slots to achieve this without changing to a dedicated board? (my server has a 6700k and acts a plex/media server, so i see no reason to not use it as a miner since its on 24/7) I have a single 850 watt gold PSU which i think can run two 3080's at the appropriate wattage (around 240 tops each). I guess beyond two i'd need to utilize a high wattage server style single psu.

Secondary note: Hoping i can fit for now at least the one 850 watt psu if not two and full atx board with a few nvme cards under on something like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08XJGG2YX/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A2MDVJHXDFM6LJ&psc=1

Any suggestions on a reliable riser?

    Thanks in advance
