Thinking mining is dead after ETH? Why is anyone here then?

    Posted: 06 May 2021 09:26 PM PDT

So I've seen this a lot going around as prices get crazy, hardware gets expensive, and PoS for ETH looms.

    Few factors

    1. Brand new ASICS are coming out this summer. Those ASIC manufacturers don't seem to think it's POW ETH is ending anytime soon.
    2. ETH devs are notorious for delays. Berlin upgrade had been pushed back multiple times. Let alone the PoS/ETH2.0
    3. The "there's no coin that can handle ETH hashrate move" this is true to an extent. I'd have to only guess that a massive majority of the ETH hashrate is coming from ASICS. Because unfortunately we do not know. Back in 2019/2020 it was known that it made up 60%! GPUs made up %40. These Same ASICS cannot mine various GPU algorithms.
    4. 3.1 When Monero "kicked" all GPUs off its network for a pure CPU network. Everyone then raved it would be all over ETH profits would fall down the toilet from the XMR miners moving to ETH. The day came and went.... nothing amazing happened. Only thing I saw was a fairly large XMR miner sell all his Vega off at clearance prices in early 2020. Bet he kicking himself now.
    5. 4. Everyone wrote off mining after 2018 Dec crash. I was there, still mining, saw a ton of people up and quit. Sell off GPUs etc. Mining subreddits and YouTube DIED. I keep on mining... still mine ETH and other GPUs to this day. If your not going to stick with it, then yes mine and sell your equipment.
    6. 5. We will eventually reach and equilibrium in price and difficulty. It all reflects on the price of ETH and other alt-coins. NO MATTER WHAT. The weak hands will quit those who can will stay.

I can't say I did everything perfectly either I made a lot of mistakes. Got my ETH wiped out in Nexo crypto-backed loan during the flash crash. But I kept going even after wanting to give up so badly. However, I still mine ETH and other coins to this day.

My piece of advice to all miners old or new. Run a very tight ship. Be extremely cost-effective (building/GPUs/Electric) this will save you in the long run. Being able to keep mining coins even at bare minimum profit waiting for the next bull-run.

Those who don't heed this warning... well I'll see your shit on eBay next year.

Does the AC power cord on the power supply interchangeable?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 08:38 AM PDT

Hello, I have an EVGA G3 850W power supply. I was recently moving stuff around and want to make sure I have the right power plug plugged in. I have a 105 C, 300W, 16 AWG, Linetek cable plugged in currently. I'm wondering if thats the right one for it.

I also have a spare 14 AWG, 105C, 300W cable extra that I bought from EVGA's website for my 1000W power supply. Is it safe to use this one on it? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

How different is profitability for a single GTX 1080 Ti on Nicehash versus mining independently with NBminer or similar?

    Posted: 07 May 2021 07:33 AM PDT

I'm mining pretty casually with a single 1080 Ti, and I'm fortunate enough to have free electricity at my office so it's all profit. I've seen it said many times that you'll do better mining on your own than bundled into something like Nicehash, but I'm wondering if the ease-of-use of Nicehash for a simp like me is worth a slight premium.

Problem is, I don't know how much that premium is, so I can't say if it's worth it or not. Anyone have a reasonable estimate of the difference in profitability?

Can someone please help me figure out which Video Cards are compatible to mine with the Ryzen 5000?

If you can paste a link to a website that can potentially help me understand what parts I need to have to make sure my rig is working properly.

    Thank you.

    PDU to a dryer hookup?

    Posted: 06 May 2021 08:31 PM PDT

Has anyone ever connected their PDU TO a washer/dryer outlet?

I don't have a dryer so I would like to use the outlet in there for my mining rig which takes over 3,500watts. The outlet is listed as 10-30 250v 30Amp.

    My PDU is a Tripp Lite Basic PDU, 30A, 20 Outlets (16 C13 & 4 C19), 200/208/240V, L6-30P Input.

Here is a picture of my dryer outlet. The left is the dryer outlet the right is what I want to swap it out for.

    https://i.redd.it/bskumgw5elx61.png

I asked on r/ askanelectrician but 50% said I could and would be fine but the other 50% said no so I'm so confused.

    I'm planning on buying https://www.homedepot.com/p/Leviton-30-Amp-Nylon-Locking-Single-Outlet-Black-R50-02710-0CS/300862062

    or https://www.lowes.com/pd/Eaton-30A-250V-Industrial-Receptacle-BL/1002943858?cm_mmc=shp-_-c-_-prd-_-elc-_-google-_-lia-_-205-_-wiringdevices-_-1002943858-_-0&placeholder=null&ds_rl=1286981&ds_a_cid=112741100&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7M3U4Ka28AIV3v_jBx1BSAtmEAQYAiABEgLa_PD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Or instead of changing the outlet has anyone had success in just using an adapter instead?

    Heat issues with 2nd card.

    Posted: 06 May 2021 08:24 PM PDT

So I finally added a 2nd card, and tomorrow I'll add a third. They are all single fan PNY 1660 Supers. Today when I added the 2nd card "GPU 0" went from running at 46° to 58° I then cranked up that cards fan to 75% from 70% and added an exhaust fan to that specific card and spaced out the two cards a little more. It went from 58° to 53° but it's still hotter than it's previous usual of 46° which is what the new GPU is running at btw.

Is this from just having my cards too close or do cards get stressed more with more GPUs?

Apply half of ETH's difficulty to RVN or ETC, you end up with minus profits. We need them to rise much more than their current price to replace post-ETH PoS.

    Posted: 06 May 2021 06:50 PM PDT

    Try it yourself on whattomine.com

I think applying half of ETH's current difficulty is fair for this calculation. Correct me if I am wrong.

This estimation can be useful to decide that if selling the rigs is the right choice or not.

does the 3060 phone home or modify itself?

    Posted: 06 May 2021 10:57 AM PDT

Just wondering if I need to do anything other than run the 470.05 beta drivers for my 3060. I picked one up this week because it was all they had on hand, my other cards are higher or lower but none are prone to hashrate limitations that I am aware of.

I say this because I read somewhere that they reinstated the limitation in later releases of the driver and also that they are considering adding limitations on other cards in the future 3080/3090. I don't know enough about how the driver signing works, and am generally against the idea of someone modifying the capabilities on my cards for the purposes that I bought them for (mining). It's my hardware and I'd like to do whatever I want with it. :-P

Let me know! and thx to all the great information everyone posts here, it's really helpful.

Question: is there a reddit group or anyplace that discusses the NEWEST coins to be mined??

    Posted: 06 May 2021 08:25 AM PDT

Question: is there a reddit group or anyplace that discusses the NEWEST coins to be mined?? You know the ones JUST about to get started?

Considering setting up an "extra" rig just to mine newest coins to rack up 1000s quickly. YES , I fully recognize most of these new coins will fail to ever amount to anything... consider this Pure Speculation/gambling lol
