I finally got that "call" today.

    Posted: 07 May 2021 07:19 PM PDT

So, I'm playing with Molly, the cat when the phone rings. Checking my caller i.d, it's Karl, a friend, or shall I say a business associate that we sometimes collaborate on projects together. Haven't heard from this guy in a year or so. I answer and receive the warmest greetings, a quick catch up chit-chat and then it starts out with a simple question. "So hey, you remember about those digital assets you kept telling me to get into? Are you still involved with it because I'd like to get some and don't know where to start." A quick flashback: I preached on the mountain top for years the wonders of crypto, but to no avail. Not only did it fall on deaf ears back then but Karl would make fun of me at parties, tell everyone that crypto was dead, get a real job yada, yada. Well, to put a long story short, Karl wants to pay for my time, take me out for dinner and talk about future, lucrative, projects together. I'm soo dying to mash it right back in his face, but he does have alot of contacts and is kind of a go to player. He's not really my friend but I kinda want the contacts. I guess I'm gonna bite my tongue and work together.

Can't decide if I should trust the opinion of an MIT trained rocket scientist and billionaire who can recite the history of mankind by memory or someone who has publicly made countless incorrect predictions about technology and makes money by recycling other people's oversimplified takes.

What do you guys think? Tough choice

Double check address before sending BTC

    Posted: 07 May 2021 02:41 PM PDT

I like to think of myself as a power user and have been in the space since 2014. I always held most of my Bitcoin on a hardware wallet and only kept tiny amount of sats on my phone wallet. Last night something happened which made me come here and make a post so that you guys don't fall for it as well.

I've always been an Android user and most attractive thing about Android for me was the ability to sideload apps. I had all kinds of sideloaded apps on my phone like VPN, livestreams, IPTV, Spotify, Camera apps and never had an issue before. I used one app named Mobdro for years for livestreams and such and it worked as expected, but a couple of weeks ago I got an update notification from this app and I clicked "Update" without thinking much about it. Last night I sent $35 worth of BTC to a friend and saw that the address this BTC was being sent to was not my friends address but it was too late since the TX was already in mempool. I quickly realized that my phone has been compromised and I had to factory reset it.

Turns out the Mobdro app developer was arrested last week and somehow someone got access to their app resources and pushed an update containing malware which would detect a Bitcoin address copied in the clipboard and replaces it with one of the attackers address. So long story short, I ended up losing $35 of BTC to a stupid malicious app.

    TL;DR

    • Always check the wallet address before sending your BTC
    • Don't sideload/install unknown/malicious apps and give them full admin access to your phone/tablet/desktop.
    • Use a bloody hardware wallet.

We are near the end of early adoption

    Posted: 07 May 2021 06:08 PM PDT

I'm not a person that came out ahead when it comes to crypto. Unfortunately, my dumb ass did some stupid shit and lost it all in a fire, so what I have is pretty minimal compared to what I've had.

With that said, I've been in the crypto game since late 2013. In that time, there was much discussion on the tech, not the price. There were still discussions on the price, but small in comparison.

I recall that I could bring up the topic with others, and they never heard the word Bitcoin, sometimes they did. I managed to enlighten some, and was called bad words indirectly by others (they would say things like overthrow the government, criminals, drugs, etc.). But a majority of the time, they never heard the word.

Over years, I've tried to educate those around me of the technology and pass on the new paradigm and how to view money. Btw, YouTube Bitcoin scishow for a decent primer on Bitcoin. That would be my homework I'd give most, then I'd break into deeper topics such as push/pull transactions, keys are just a number in an astronomical range, hashing, block headers being chained into another block by hashing, etc.

It was rare for me to find another into crypto. Over the years it became a few per year that even heard of it. Now, at my new job site, five out of seven have something or are planning to have it or are wanting to learn more. I run across others that have in the hundreds of thousands worth, to just over a thousand worth.

The point I'm making is, if I were to base adoption by the number of people that have heard of it, it's gone from near none to almost everyone, there's still the odd ball. Get that, if they haven't heard of it, they're the odd ball. But if I based the adoption on the number of people I witness that are interested in it or have some, from back then to now. Omg, we've hit adoption.

But get this. Most get excited, then talk over me with excitement, saying how they've heard of others getting rich so they want in. Very few are interested in the tech, but in get rich quick. I enjoy watching some gain more interest and start quoting me on how it works, but since we aren't in the stage of understanding, we are still a smidge early.

Many years ago, I was told by another, it is their greed that gets them in, then it's their understanding that keeps them in, that they'll gain understanding as they start to research the tech so they can play the market better. In short, greed buys their attention, and greed drives the start of their education.

This is the phase we are in right now.
    Greed. Next comes paradigm shift.

    Built a SHA-256 machine

    Posted: 08 May 2021 02:40 AM PDT

So I was wondering if it will be possible to develop a machine without electricity which operates logic gates for a one turn of sha256 that can be 3d print like this curta machine (I expect a 128 turn will be to much hard). I saw a lot of videos on YouTube for making logic gates which are very cool btw (from lego to pneumatic ones using paper). This can be really time saver if we want for example generate a bitcoin address by hand which needs to do 3 times of 128 round of sha256 if I'm not mistaken.
