New Miner here, Is [NiceHash] mining profitable?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 08:30 AM PDT

I recently got into mining as I had some extra PC Parts laying around and decided to put them to work. I used the profitability calculator from NiceHash and saw that I could make some decent money, however when I look elsewhere I am seeing that I will be mining at a loss. Can anyone help?

    Speed: 113-120 MH/s

    Power: 280-315 W

    Efficiency: 375-505 kH/J

Cost of Power in my area: 8.14 cent/kWh

180 MH/s outside on apartment balcony.

    Imgur album

My bedroom was getting way too hot from my rig. I decided to try and run my rig on my apartment's balcony. I looked into building a custom enclosure, but decided on modifying a "deck box" from Home Depo.

    Currently running 3x RX580, 1x 1660 Super, 1x 5700xt.

    Intake fans - 2x 120mm, 2x 140mm NZXT Aer F for a total of about 300 CFM.

Exhaust Fan - Amazon basics 7" fan. (Unknown CFM).

Its currently 61f outside and the hottest card (rx 580) is at 54c. I will continue to monitor the temps as we get warmer weather and modify the setup as needed.

Total cost of the build ~ $280

    Deck box - $150

    Amazon Fan - $18

    NZXT Fans - $40

    fan controller - $15

    100ft cat6 cable - $10

    25ft 12gauge extention cable - $20

    Air filters - $10

    Zip ties - $5

Other than "but babe it's basically free heating, imagine all the 10s of pennies we'll save" I need more positive excuses as to why I've plonked a mining rig in our living room. Every suggestion could potentially help save a miners life.

    Trouble with PCI-E Splitters

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 12:32 AM PDT

I'm currently trying to hook up my 5700XT's to my mobo with 1-to-4 pcie splitters.

    https://www.amazon.com/XT-XINTE-Riser-Multiplier-Express-Machine/dp/B07CSQDHBV/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

My specs - MSI Z390 mobo, Intel i5 cpu 8th gen, Radeon 5700xt's, windows 10.

I've tried changing the PCIE 16x speed to both GEN1 and GEN2 but my motherboard still does not recognize when I connect more than one gpu.

Has anyone had success with these and what specs are you running?

My frustration is making me seriously consider getting a B250 mining expert.

RX5700 Miners... What Driver do you Run?

    Posted: 29 Mar 2021 02:48 AM PDT

Do you rx5700 owners run the latest drivers or is there a specific driver that is more stable for mining? Or do you just go with the latest driver?

2 Rig or 1 Rig but buy PSU

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 08:24 PM PDT

So I've just started mining a few weeks ago, just realized how profitable it is now, and kinda regret not doing it sooner.

At first, I own Zotac GTX 1070ti Mini, and recently just bought Gigabyte GTX 1080 G1. I have 2 rigs, each supplied with 500-600W PSU so I guess it's impossible to run 2 GPU on only one rig.

So my question is, I know running 2 rigs with only 1 GPU each is a waste of electricity, but compared with the bill and if it's still going to be profitable for 6+ months, is it more profitable to just buy a new 750W+ PSU (around $100-$150 where I live) or just live with 2 rigs running?

    GPU Power:

    1070ti = around 110-135w

    1080 = around 150-170w

    My 1st Rig spec:

    -Ryzen 5 3600

    -1TB HDD, 256GB Nvme

    -2x8GB DDR4 Ram 3200Mhz

    -Air Cooled Deepcool Gammax GT

    -Turned off all RGB

    -500w 80+ Bronze PSU

    My 2nd rig spec:

    -Intel i3 3400

    -2x 1TB HDD, 512GB Sata SSD

    -2x4GB DDR3 Ram

    -Air Stock Cooled

    -No RGB

-600w 80+ psu but shady manufacturer

Could really use some advice on taxes.

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:25 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

So I'm a small time miner, (did maybe 2k Last year, will do up to 15k this year depending on the market), and I'm trying to figure out my taxes. Even though I'm small time, I have several hundred pages of mining records from Nicehash, Kryptex, Betterhash, cudominer, and Coinbase. Is there any software out there that can make sense of my cost basis for tax reporting? I didn't report in previous years because I never hit the reporting threshold. My typical flow is that all services pay out the Coinbase and then I will exchange BTC in coinbase to FIAT.

My accountant is unfamiliar with BTC so this is falling mainly on me. FWIW, I've tried taxbit, but it can't establish cost basis on my coinbase account. The resulting report is useless since it just disregards any payments for which it can't create a cost basis.

Tech issue - too old of mobo? - out of memory

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:19 PM PDT

I have been painstakingly trying to get this small rig set up and prepped for scaling upwards. I'm at this - hopefully last - hurdle. It's built w parts I no longer need in other builds so nothing is brand new except the SSD w the OS(windows)

Basically, every miner I try gives me some sort of error about "no available memory" or "gpu out of memory", etc....

I've tried everything I could find on the topic: - reinstall drivers - reinstall gpus - change page size from countless different configs - change random bios things - and more

    Specs: Intel i5 650 8.00 Gb ram 2 x 1050 'Ti's Mobo: asus P7H55-M

Miners: all of them(Trex, Gminer, etc...) including just RaveOS

I suspect the motherboard is the issue and needs to just be replaced but that's last resort. Asking for help here first . But basically it has 1 PCIE 16 slot , which has a gpu, and 3 other PCI slots . The PCI1 just below the 16 has the second gpu.

I appreciate any and all comments ! Thank you for your time and helps

Is watercooling the 3080 worth it?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:17 PM PDT

I currently run the 3080 Gaming OC w/ swapped out thermal pads. ~100MH/s @ ~88 to 94 C (mem temp.).

As the summer is approaching, I was wondering, is spending an extra $100 on each card to watercool them worth it?

If anyone has done this, please let me know :) thank you!

Can I let my memory run at 110 for a week or two?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 12:11 PM PDT

Ordered some thermal pads to replace my Gigabyte 3080 memory pads, just wondering if it's okay to let the card run at 110C memory temps for a week or two while I wait for the pads. Thanks.

Requirements for an RTX 3060 rig

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 07:34 PM PDT

Hi, so I just got 5x RTX 3060 and I was wondering if I could just use pcie risers like a regular rig. I know I need those dummy hdmi plugs but what else do I need? I'm assuming I would need a motherboard with 5 regular pcie slots on it but I'm not sure. Thanks.

    3060 OC Help

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 12:46 PM PDT

So I have a MSI 3060 Ventus 2x OC in my personal PC and have started to mine with it (have the correct drivers, etc.). However, the most I am able to get out of it is ~46-47 MH/s while being stable. I'm using:

    80% PL

    -250 CC

    +1000 Mem

I'm mining Eth using T-rex on windows. If I push the Mem any higher I start getting invalid shares (or GPU crashing...). Any help is appreciated!

Also would be interested in how you systematically tune your cards (like how you move PL and CC in tandem to find sweet spot).

P.S. I know I can push the PL and CC lower, but didn't want to impact my daily use (reddit, internet, writing, etc.) I only turn the miner off for gaming.

Is there such thing as "too low" temperature for your GPUs? - A.K.A - Should I build my rig inside of a fridge?

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 05:41 PM PDT

    Hi,

    Theoretical question (yet):

Is there such thing as "too low" temperature for the GPUs in a mining PC?

What if I simply put the whole thing inside an industry fridge? Are they optimized for a certain degree of Celsius? Can I damage them for example running them at really low temps like 30-40 C° ?

    Linux Kernel vs HashRate

    Posted: 28 Mar 2021 01:55 PM PDT

    Hi! To anyone running linux.

I'm running a Vega 64 with a successful hash rate of 50+ on linux mint with kernel 5.4. However if i upgrade to 5.8 or 5.10+ i get a lower hash rate of approx 40-42. Re-installing AMD GPU-Pro drivers does not fix this so I`m stuck on 5.4. Any suggestions? Thanks!

    Regards N
