    Understanding A Pool's UI

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 04:20 AM PST

This post is geared towards newcomers who started and don't understand what all the information a pool provides means. A lot of you may know this, but I'm hoping this clears up some questions for all the newbies.

Alright, so you set up a rig and connected to a pool. But there are all these words and graphs that you don't really know. What do shares mean? What is current/effective hashrate and why does it keep going up and down? What is difficulty? What does this all mean?

I'm not going to explain the foundations of crypto and how it all works, but essentially crypto is blockchain (which serves as a digital ledger) that secures each transaction and block using cryptographic hash functions. It's secure because cryptographic hash functions have unique properties which, given an input, it gets an obfuscated jargled string of random information. But if someone gives you the output of a hash function, it is EXTREMELY difficult (almost impossible) to get the original input back. So a hash is that, just the output of feeding some information (for most blockchains it's previous block hash, list of transactions in the block, and some additional information) into a function/algorithm. So when your hashrate is 60Mh/s it means your machine is capable of producing 60,000,000 hashes using the algorithm in one second.

But blockchains have requirements for what is considered a valid block. You can't just hash some random stuff together and call it a block. For Bitcoin it looks at the number of 0s produced in the front of the output. I'm not too familiar with how Ethash works (I'm still studying it) but the gist is the same. So this is where difficulty comes in. In general, difficulty just specifies the average number of hashes required to get a valid block solution, which it's why it's given in the unit of H. In ETH, the current difficulty as of this writing is 5.25 PH, which means on average it'll take 5.25*10^15 hashes to find a valid block solution. Difficulty rises when there are more hashpower because blockchains want a consistent block time. ETH wants an average of 13-14s between blocks, therefore difficulty is scaled so it's ~13-14x the network hashrate. 5258/13 = 403.8 Th/s, which is close to the current network hashrate of 415 Th/s.

However, a pool consists of many miners, so how do they determine how much work you've done? Well they do it by setting a lower pool difficulty and have their miners submit what's called a share. A share is basically a valid block that satisfies a given difficulty, but it might be considered too easy to be submitted to the network and included in the blockchain. Your submitted shares show the pool that you're contributing, and pools will distribute the reward it gets in proportion to your shares relative to the total share count the pool received (though it depends on the pool's payout scheme.) A pool may adjust their difficulty higher so it'll process less data, but it does not mean your machine will have a greater workload!

So basically your machine is just churning numbers and trying to find valid blocks, and if you find one that satisfies the pool's difficulty you'll submit it to the pool as a share. But since mining is probabilistic, you may find more or fewer shares at any given time. You can also calculate the average number of shares you should find using this: Hashrate/Difficulty * time (in seconds). So for example, a 60Mh/s rig at a 4Gh difficulty pool can expect to find ON AVERAGE 60/4000 * 3600 = 54 shares per hour. Your current/effective hashrates are also calculated in the same way. Say you found 15 shares in the last 10 minutes at a 4Gh difficulty pool, so swapping variables around you get 15 * 4000/600 = 100 Mh/s of current/effective hashrate. In general, the longer the timeframe, the closer it gets to your reported hashrate.

Hopefully, this answers some questions! Happy mining y'all!

    5700xt BIOS mod

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 07:16 AM PST

So i have a newer version of the power color red devil 5700xt. I think it's samsung memory because i can't overclock the memory above 1790mhz without getting rejected shares. I did the bios mod where you take the third memory timing and paste it to the rest of the memory timings and added 3000 to the trefs. right now my hashrate is 56/ 49 actual. i know most of these guides are a few months old but people seem to get up to 58 hash with this card. what would you do to improve hashrates? My OC is core 1405mhz at 793v 1790 mem, 109watts showing on wattman

Everything was working perfectly before i bought 1070ti.. So when i start the pc display wont show anything, gpu fans are spinning, then after like 15 seconds the display brighten a bit, keyboard and mouse rgb turns on for a bit and then it turns off. When i get lucky and i get to windows, i test mining/heavygaming and the pc just freezes, i see artifacts on the screen, cant do anything about it, pc shuts down and here we go again to the same problem as i mentioned before.. MSI RTX 3070 ventus 2X need to run fan at 100% or windows 10 freezes. Not sure why.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 08:03 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm pretty new to mining and have enjoyed the many threads in this subreddit. Did a search, doesn't seem to be much about this variation of the 3070.

My rig consists of a b250 mining expert mobo and 4x rx580 8gb. And was running fine and stable. Recently I got my hands on a MSI Rtx 3070 ventus 2x and was having trouble from keeping my rig from freezing windows after an hr or 2 of mining on Phoenix miner 5.5.

I tried many OC settings and the only settings that have worked and I've been mining 24h straight is 60% power, -200 core, +1100 memory and 100% fan. I tried 70% and 80% fan. It froze windows. Only 100% fan works. At 80% the gpu was only 57C when it froze.

The rig is in my garage and it's around 22 degrees C in there. So not overly hot. At 100% fan the gpu is at 52C

Anyone have the same card or have any insight ? Any issues with running the fan 100% all the time ?

    Thanks in advance.

Need help or suggestions (Maximize connections)

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:29 PM PST

I currently have a mining rig with 3 3070s, each of the risers are powered with a 6pin pcie connector, is there a way I can change up how I power the risers, to connect more gpus? I can get another psu, but it only has 4 pcie 2×6+2pin connectors, how can I maximize connections, while safely powering risers?

    What mobo for mining 4x3080s?

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:45 AM PST

What PCIE slot is needed to get the max hashrate out of a 3080?

    Does:

    ASRock H81 PRO BTC R2.0 Intel 1150

have enough bandwidth per PCIE slot to accommodate 4 x 3080?

It only seems to have 1 pcie16 and 5 pcie 2 slots. I thought 3080 needs more than just a pcie 2

Eth: Could not connect to ethash pool ssl://eu1.ethermine.org:5555: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:44 AM PST

everything is working as desired until I try to use NordVpn. then I get the following error.

Eth: Could not connect to ethash pool ssl://eu1.ethermine.org:5555: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

turn off the VPN and mining returns to normal.

I'd like to be able to use a VPN while mining as I have been getting brute force attacks every few days and although Nortons is blocking them, I'd like to minimize attacks as much as possible. any ideas?

    Thanks

    Show me the money!

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 11:12 PM PST

Been mining for little over a week and I'm almost about to have my first payout from my pool.

I've been mining ethereum with flexpool to a coinbase wallet.

But I'm a little confused about where to transfer the ethereum to, to then get it to my UK bank account as real money.

I have a coinbase account and coinbase pro too - can someone please explain the best way of doing this, preferably without incurring lots of fees?

    TIA.

Advice for Mobo setup - ASUS PRIME H470-PLUS/CSM

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:39 AM PST

I am getting this Mobo+ATX+commercial+motherboard+(8+power+stages,+HDMI,+DisplayPort,+dual+M.2,+Intel+LAN,+USB+3.2+Gen+2+Type-C%C2%AE,+Thunderbolt%E2%84%A2+3+support)) from ASUS next week. I am going to try to set it up for 6 GPUs, and then 7 or 8 once my m.2 to PCIe x4 cards come. Does anyone have any advice for BIOS settings and procedures for connecting GPUS? Will it be the same as the H270-Plus?

I will be using Windows 10, at least to start with. GPUs will be a mix of 3070s and 1660 Supers. I have two power supplies I'll run with a 24 pin splitter. I have the powered USB3 PCIe x1 to x16 riser working in smaller old Dell Optiplex rigs already.

The new miner asking for help!

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 06:13 AM PST

I recently joined this wonderful community and started mining 20 days ago and I'm looking into getting even more involved with all this but before that, I need to learn the basics of course. I'm glad that the crypto/mining community is friendly towards newcomers and I came across many people who helped me and answered my questions to the best of their ability. Maybe one day I will be able to return the favor to the community.

I usually try to do my own research before asking for help online but I wasn't successful at finding my answers on my own. I understand that some kind of maintenance and surveillance is very much needed to be a successful miner. I'm using HiveOS on USB as my OS on both of my rigs. I was questioning myself about few things...

    1. Is there's a way to get notifications about new updates for HiveOS or AMD/NVIDIA drivers and do I need to install the newest drivers/updates as soon as possible?
    2. What is the best way to troubleshoot problems that my rigs are giving me without writing it on forums/chats asking for help? Where can I learn to read rig logs and use them to fix my problem? There is a bunch of words/numbers I tried looking through guides but sometimes even those are not very helpful (for me).
    3. I'm aware that every GPU is a silicon lottery and I know that I need to come up with my own overclocks/undervolting but I couldn't find how to do it myself, how to know the limits of my GPUs, and how to know when I'm overdoing it and vice versa.
    4. How important is it to replace thermal pads on already used GPUs for mining? I have a rig of 6 GPUs RX 470 4GB that are mining RVN at the moment but they used to mine ETH for a year or so (according to the seller) and I was wondering if I should replace their thermal pads or not?
    5. Last but not least I was wondering if there are other alternatives for profitable mining with GPUs other than Ethereum and RavenCoin?

What I was aiming for with this post is to better understand how to be efficient without going online asking for help every time I encounter a problem with my rigs but instead to do my own troubleshooting.

Thank you in advance for taking your time to read all this. Happy mining!

Gigabyte RX 480, fans randomly stop spinning.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 05:33 AM PST

I got a used rx 480 for a very decent price and thought I'd put it to use for mining with nicehash. So I put it in my system, installed the latest adrenalin drivers and started mining. It started good enough but soon the temps went skyrocketing and I noticed the fans weren't spinning. I messed around a bit and thought it was some driver issue and replaced the adrenalin with the crimson blockchain drivers and after a couple of restarts it ran and I encountered the same issue.

So I checked that the fans were properly plugged in the PCB and tried to eliminate the possibility it could be a loose contact issue. I reinstalled the latest drivers once more and it ran for an hour and 26 mins when the fans just suddenly stopped spinning for no reason.

When I googled this issue someone mentioned that having MSI afterburner and the Radeon software try to control the fans could cause this issue. So I completely quit afterburner, reinstalled the latest whql drivers, and set the fan curve with the Radeon software. It ran well for about 1 hour and 46 minutes and I thought that was the issue but nope, suddenly out of nowhere the fans stopped spinning. Every now and then they fired up and spun a little but soon came to a halt.

I'm at a loss of what to do. I haven't completely eliminated the possibility that it could be a loose contact because when I set the fan speed manually on afterburner it says it's running at the percent and the "fan stop" light goes off but the fans themselves don't actually spin. Another weird thing is that on Radeon software the speed is being reported as 0 rpm and no amount of tuning the fan curves actually moves the fan. Every now and then it just spins a little and comes to a stop.

Lastly, I dissembled the Graphics card and checked if the fan wires were connected properly once more, installed crimson relive 17 driver (one listed in the gigabyte website) and after that, they won't even spin, even though the "fan stop" light goes off.

I'm at a loss of what to do, I can't even figure out if this is some loose contact issue or software issue. If anyone had this problem and figured out a solution please let me know. This seems like a kind of common issue with polaris cards but none of those solutions I found googling worked.

    Specs :- cpu - 1950x threadripper psu - 750w coolermaster gold rated ram - 16gb gpu0 - rx 480 gpu1 - 2080ti

rx 480 overclocks:- TDP at -36% (~80w) set memory type 2 in radeon software tuning settings. It was mining at 25.5 mh/s during the last decent run. Tried on both nbminer and phoenix miner through nicehash.

    Thanks

Optimal fee structure (and moving away from nicehash)

    Posted: 26 Feb 2021 04:03 PM PST

I, like many others, began mining with nicehash but want to move away from this (why is overclocking so difficult - I wish I was better with vim), and I've been hearing from many sources that mining with nicehash is straight up not as profitable as mining with other OSes/clients (like hiveos, minerstat, straight linux with a miner, etc). I've been testing this transition (with just a card at first) and I'm wondering what some of your miner fee's have been looking like.

    I have two main goals:

    1. Maximize profits (aka minimizing fees) - Primary goal
    2. Maintain some financial flexibility - I don't have the scale yet to mine thousands of $ per week, so I'd rather not have to mine thousands of $ worth of eth before I can withdraw

With nicehash, my fee structure would go like this: Every payout (4 hrs) I'd lose roughly 2% to fees, then a free transfer to coinbase, then I'd lose a few $ on the BTC -> USD sale to fees, then a free withdrawl to paypal. Let's say the mining amount was $100, all around I'd lose $2 to the mining fees, then $3-5, so I'd come away with approximately $93-95.

I figured I'd give minerstat and flexpool a try, but now I seem to pay more fees, not less. I gave it a shot with a card this last week and mined the minimum payout on flexpool. Now, I pay 1% on the miner fee (I believe, not quite sure how to check this) plus 5$ to withdraw to "coinbase wallet" (free with nicehash), then another $3-4 to transfer to coinbase (I thought that part would be free at least), then the $3-5 fee to sell from eth to USD, then I could withdraw to paypal.

I am somewhat surprised, and I feel I must simply be approaching this wrong. I am still fairly new to mining, but I have heard that more $ can be made by moving away from nicehash. I am scratching my head that I appear to be paying almost double the fees for mining the same amount in minerstat with a coinbase wallet.

Surely I must be doing this a dumb way. What do your payout structures look like? I do want to move away from nicehash but there appears to be large fees everywhere.

Molex splitters, single molex to pcie 6, and double molex to pcie 6

    Posted: 27 Feb 2021 01:06 AM PST

My PSU comes with 4 molex in and wondering if I could use a molex splitter to double it.Another question is whether to get a single molex to PCIE or double molex to pcie.

Im thinking maybe I could use the molex splitter to atleast double the amount of molex I have on the PSU, or is this a bad idea?Another thing is about the molex adapters where I've seen there is a double molex to 6 pin and single molex to 6 pin. Would it be fine if I just use the single molex to 6pin?
Also since I've been seeing many double molex to 6 pin im wondering is it ok to use a splitter on it?

I've heard sata to 6 pin is bad when using the risers so Im planning to get the adapter molex to 6 pin.
