Miners with 3080s - How bad is the Mem temps long term

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 07:34 AM PST

I am attempting to grab a couple gtx 3080's for my gaming rigs, with the goal of mining with them as well. However, I have learned that their memory is not well cooled right now, thanks to some information from Tom's hardware and hwinfo64.

For those more experienced than me, how bad is running the mem temps that high for extended periods of time?

And what remedies would people suggest? I would like to pull as much hashing out of the 3080's when I eventually get them, but I'd also like to have a plan if I have to add extra thermal pads. (I'd also like to have those on hand when the cards arrive).

I put together a (Google DOCS) of recent GPUS and mining rates/street price. Please advise so I can make corrections! Please note difficulty changes all the time but the relative profititability should remain the same.

Mining Efficiency with GTX 1070 / Awesome Miner / Mining Pool Hub

Ok, so I wrote this a bit ago but had to build up some karma first and have a 21 day account so here it is with the updates/edits in italics.

    Hi,

I have always made basic repairs on desktop components and built computers for friends and family when asked to. I am an avid gamer and have always loved the idea of overclocking components and water cooling them. I even lapped a Q6600 with sandpaper for hours, finishing finally with newspaper once, such is my commitment, or madness, Ill let you decide that.

I have always spoke about building a mining rig and never really got round to doing the reading, but inspired by some family members (and the fact I had most of the bits required to start lying around) I have now done a small amount and built a rig.

    My specs are:

    Gigabyte Z270p D3 G4400 Pentium Windows 10Corsair 750W PSU

    Gigabyte GTX 1070 Windforce (Micron) - 90% TDP / +200 Clock / +600 Mem - 30.5 MH/s - 152W

    Asus GTX 1070 Dual OC (Micron) - +95% TDP / +175 Clock / +250 Mem - 28.3 MH/s - 135W

    HP Omen GTX 1070 + AIO Kraken X61(Samsung) - 90%TDP / +225 Clock / +400 Mem - 30.15 MH/s - 128W

    MSI GTX 1070 Aero (Micron) - 95% TDP / +175 Clock / +350 Mem - 29.3 MH/s - 140W

    Palit Gamerock GTX 1070 (Micron) - 95%TDP / +150 Clock / +300 Mem - 29.1 MH/S - 138W

    ROG Strix GTX 1070 - +90 / +150 Clock / +350 Mem - 28.5 MH/s - 141W

Moving forward I have built my own frame out of timber (Which I am really happy about and will probably follow this up with a picture at the weekend), I have a 1200w HP server PSU with a breakout board and a further 5 GPUS to go in which are:

    Image of actual rig.

Just to explain the OC, I am very competent when it comes to games however mining was a completely different ball game and very much trial and error. Also I seemed to find a lot on conflicting information out there. Initially I had them the GPUS's set with much lower TDP of around 65%, this obviously resulted in better energy consumption, but it was finding the right zone in the middle where the Watts per MH was as low as possible.

I also noted that although the efficiency and power consumption of the cards was a massive variable, with the price of crypto at the minute it was much more profitable to bump the power consumption up to the point where there were diminishing returns from the cards in regards to mega hash. I could get around 31 on the GB and 29 on the Asus on full power@ around 300W. So I reasoned 2 mh/s for 40W was not reasonable.

(However since this point I have seen on awesome miner it is actually more profitable to just got for higher megahash, Is this correct?)

If I have made any mistakes so far, please flag me up lol.

The main reason for the post, and i know I have gone round the houses a bit, is the efficiency of overclocks. I have been mining for 5 (21 Days) days now, and I want to analyse my figures so I get it right with the remaining cards go in. (The other cards are obviously in now with updated OC figures)

I have used awesome miner with phoenix miner and through mining pool hub. It mined a little bit of bitcoin cash at the start but then switched to Ethereum and has not budged. I have been auto exchanging this to litecoin for the withdrawal fees when this time comes. Again any issues please flag me up.

My results for the last 4 days are:

    17.01 - 0.0030 - 58 mh/s

    16.01 - 0.0026 - 58 mh/s

    15.01 - 0.0038 - 55 mh/s

    14.01 - 0.0032 - 55 mh/s

    **Edit update from OP

Now the bit that has me completely fuddled and the main reason for this post is:

On the 14 and 15 was when I had the lower TDP and lower mh/s but I have mined more coin. So is this just completely the luck of the draw? Or a difficulty factor?

    Or am I missing something??

I now have 2 rigs, one is a frankenstein of my personal PC with 2 x GTX 1080 within it, using Ethlargement PIll.

My total hashrate is 242 MH/s and for the last 3 days I have mined 0.015 ETH a day.

Apologies for the long post but I wanted to make sure all the information was there.

Has anyone used this website to order GPUs? they seem to have good prices but I'm a bit leery about trusting such a foreign manufacturer. I'm new to mining and am looking to start making a rig. They are selling RX5700xt's for between $100-$300.

How do I find out which one of my cards is physically GPU5?

    Posted: 02 Feb 2021 05:42 AM PST

One GPU is giving me problems and I want to just remove it so I can make my rig stable. Short of removing 1 card...letting my rig run for 12-24 hours until it crashes and then eliminating the cards one by one based on which one I unplugged, how can I make my task easier?

    Thanks

PhoenixMiner 5.5c / Linux / not respecting passed parameters

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:51 PM PST

Trying to tune my rtx 3070.

    • Clear Linux
    • PhoenixMiner 5.5c
    • drivers 460.39

PhoenixMiner is not respecting any settings except pool. Running as root makes no difference.

    $ ./PhoenixMiner -config ~/mining/phoenix.conf

    phoenix.conf is:

    # # GPU Opts # # only NVIDIA -nvidia # proprietary driver optimizations -nvdo 1 # reset overclocks on startup -resetoc # # Thermal control # # target temp -tt 65 # stop temp -tstop 75 # restart temp -tstart 70 # minimum fan speed -fanmin 20 # maximum fan speed -fanmax 100 # # Power # # power limit; -75 > 75; default 0 -powlim -50 # core clock, NVI use offsets: -xxx or +xxx -cclock -200 # core voltage in mV #-cvddc # memory clock -mclock +1000 # memory voltage in mV #-mvddc

hashrate is 51 MH/s, never higher than 72% fan, 200+W

varying the settings makes no difference

even running without config text and single parameter (-powlim -75) makes no difference

Same whether run as user or run as root

Any suggestions on how to proceed from here? Not yet gone to trouble of trying a different miner. Phoenix is steady and reliable on my AMD rig.

    Pcie cable configuration 3060ti

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:47 PM PST

Just wondering if what ive done is safe?

    I have 3 x 3060ti.

    The two in my system:

Palit has 1 x 8 pin pcie and the msi ventus has 2 x 8 pin pcie.

I have a kfa outside thats powered using 1 x 8 pin pcie. Also a 6pin pcie is needed for the riser.

    Ive got a 850w corsair with 3 x pcie cables that branch into 2 x 8pin pcie

Due to space issues and the corsair cables shitty flexibility ive had to do the following.

Used first pci cable to power the palit and msi ventus. The 2nd to power the msi ventus and the riser of the kfa.

Then the 3rd to power just the kfa.

System is on and mining great with no issues so far. Just its abit of a mess with the 1st pci cable powering the palit and one 8 pin on the ventus.

Thanks if you got this far.

Out of your seasoned experience: How much is expected increasing mining difficulty lowering expected monetary gain?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:28 PM PST

Every now and then I consider to build a mining rig. Now I think about biting the bullet and invested a decent amount of time in researching cards and setting up an Google Sheet with costs (hardware and electricity) and expected outcome.

Things look tempting for a 8x RTX 3090 rig:

    This is really tempting!

I am a seasoned IT guy and have built and maintained several computers. So no worries here..

The course of Cortex is slightly declining over the years, but relatively stable. The difficulty seems to decrease even more. What could be the reason?

How long had your rigs been profitable?

Laptop GTX1650 is profitable and it can heat the house in the winter, but will it kill the laptop?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:02 PM PST

Reading people's testimonials about laptop mining makes it sound like mining will burn out my GPU. Is this a real thing? I'd imagine my laptop fan and GPU would be throttling as necessary to keep temps safe.

    Anyone know better?

RTX 3080 crashes on PhoenixMiner, T-Rex, lolminer with no error messages.. just keep re-running in loop?

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:58 PM PST

Hey everyone, I recently started mining (ETH only) and had some problems with miners hard-crashing but not printing/logging any errors.

I am using an RTX 3080 w/ driver ver 457.51. I don't think the card is overheating, I have the fan manually set to 100% and have been monitoring memory junction temp. Memory temp maxes out at 91C, GPU core temp maxes at 47C. I have tried many different overclock/power settings, from very conservative to higher values. Would a crash due to an unstable overclock print anything to the console/log?

The ONLY miner that does not crash is when I tried using Excavator through NiceHash. The NiceHash main window would close/crash silently, but Excavator kept mining. Haven't tried to run Excavator on its own.

The solution I have been using currently is to just re-run the miner when it fails in the batch script. Is this common practice or something to be avoided? If so, should I crank the memory overclock for higher hash rate since the miner will be crashing anyways to make up for some of the down time?

    Thanks for the help.

More than 2 gpu not recognised.

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:30 PM PST

    Hi,

    I have a x570ud gigabyte motherboard, 8gb ram and ryzen 5, with a 256gb nvme.

I bought this config, so that I could also use it for mining too, I have 2 3060ti and a 3070, I am trying to run one of the 3060 ti gpu through riser through pcie1x for mining, while the other 2 GPUs are connected directly through x16 slots, however the GPU connected via the riser is not visible in device manager, I tried placing the riser 1x slot in an 16x slot too, but then too it was not visible.

I tried enabling 4g decoding in bios and gen2, but to no avail.

I then arranged a nvidia 1030, and tried to run that via the riser, I thought since the 1030 required no external power, it could be visible, I understand there is no reason for this line of thought, but since I was able to get my hands on an older gpu, which had a differentiation, I wanted to give it a shot.

And this time the 1030 gpu was recognised easily through the riser!

I have tried and searched whatever I could, really need some help here, would be awesome if someone could diagnose and help me ! 🥺

PC-Canada accept the backorder for the 3060ti

    Posted: 01 Feb 2021 10:06 AM PST

    Hi Reddit,

For Canadian fellows, PC-Canada accept the backorder since this morning.

If you cannot click on "add to cart" you can still modify the add to cart link of another item with the ID of the 3060ti.

Just did it, it worked and they called me to confirm that my order was placed.

Idk if that will work for everyone and for how long... Just thought you might be interested and you can give it a try.
