Eth Stolen - Don't be like me

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 03:22 PM PST

Today, January 1st at 6:19:12 AM Central Time (11 hours ago as of the writing of this post), my ethereum wallet was emptied of it's balance of 4.10 Eth EDIT, my second wallet was also emptied of 2.3 ether

Here is the transaction ID: https://etherscan.io/tx/0xf01967ce5ce8ba048530f0e0c37cfd01466b05e416a82a1afe9af39151bc4e35

    and https://etherscan.io/tx/0xcef9b77a7b87581690a72416df6b06a94d2818e8982a7e315122a134400f1666

it appears one occured roughly 1 minute after the other.

I feel like I am going to vomit, my stomach is deep pit.

Is there anything I can do?!

Background: I am new to this community, not being much of a redditor either. When I made this wallet it was my first venture into crypto, I was just a kid.

I mined some eth, and built a small balance, things happened and I stopped focusing on crypto for a while. A few months ago, my interest was sparked once again, and I purchased a ledger and decided to finally secure my crypto, pulling my balances of exchanges. I had to stop at the wallet.

I was just a kid, and didn't understand the importance of security or organization, so my password was not very secure, and I had forgotten it.

Results: For the past month I've been working off and on to guess my password, today I finally managed, however 10 hours too late. This just feels so awful and unlucky, 10 hours! 10 hours could have made all the difference! Instead I've just lost nearly all my crypto, and even worse, on the first day of a new year. I would be laughing if it wasn't so awful, because for this to happen today, almost feels poetic. Why not yesterday? Or a year ago? This just feels like a bad dream.

This is worse than just losing a few thousand dollars, it is a portion of childhood, and lately I've been really happy with where eth is going and now it turns out my seat on the wagon was an ejection seat this whole time, and it went off just as things could have turned around.

TLDR: unsecure childhood eth account is emptied just at the beginning of a new year, and I was 10 hours too late to save it.

What can I do? The cops can't help?! Is there any chance I can recover it?

    I'm panicking.

Edit: 7:27 PM Central Standard Time, the account of which my ether was emptied into received ether from binance approximately 30 days ago. https://etherscan.io/tx/0xd9724b6c4de5c50948a08ae2d306fa9a3b47e72c8d7fc9070fca35870c8bf511 I have sent an email to Binance requesting they freeze any funds this person may have on the exchange, and to discuss with my further possibilities of recourse. I am unfamiliar with the process, and am waiting for them to get back to me.

Edit: 8:52 PM Central Standard Time, I have investigated my PC as a user suggested. Some "Trojans" were detected. I now suspect that my keystore files were extracted by this malware, and immediately password cracked at another location, with the wallets immediately drained within a minute of eachother. The account holding the stolen ether has hit ~dozen ether walllets, sharing the similar characteristic of being mined to and then forgotten about, before being emptied in the past ~40 days. I will soon file a police report, although it is unlikely this will help.

[META] Can the mods do something about breaking the no-price talk rule?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:20 PM PST

This sub explicitly has a "no price discussion" rule, and we have two subs r/ethfinance and r/ethtrader for that purpose. Yet I've been seeing increasingly more posts talking about price and speculation in the past month or so. r/ethereum is one of the few crypto subs that haven't been ruined by moonboys and is a stark contrast to r/Bitcoin or r/cc. I don't know about you guys but I've enjoyed this sub a lot since 2017 primarily because of this fact, and it bothers me that these speculation posts are at the top right now.

    How to restore wallet

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:48 AM PST

I want to get back into ETH and found one of my old back up files from 2017. The file is named 20171220.txt.gpg. The content looks like a binary format.

I can't remember what wallet I was using at the time but recall it was a web based one.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for where to get started restoring this wallet?

    ELI5 tornado.cash anonymity mining?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:06 AM PST

    ELI5 tornado.cash anonymity mining?

So I was thinking I'd give tornado.cash anonymity mining a go, just to see how it works, and already I'm clearly unqualified. I've come to the screen you get when you press "Setup" (https://app.tornado.cash/mining):

Setup screen for tornado.cash anonymity mining

    1. Why do I need the recovery key? What does it recover? I'm used to the keys I get for using tornado.cash that I can then redeem elsewhere for that amount, but where does this come into it? Do I use this when I recover a code? Do I use this after I've recovered a code? At the destination account? At the creation account? Anywhere?
    2. How does on-chain backup of the key work? Is it somehow encrypted so that only the wallet I created it with can read it?
    3. Why does the on-chain recovery not work with a hardware wallet (at least that is what it says)? How does that make a difference? I was thinking of maybe trying this with a Ledger.

Hope someone can help a fellow cryptoer out, who is clearly all to used to the standard mining procedure!

    Interactive App

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 11:44 AM PST

Unfortunately, Ethereum isnt as easy to explain as bitcoin, and so I keep hearing how Ethereum is hard to fully grasp/explain by no coiners so why not SHOW people why Ethereum is great?

Someone should build (Im not a programmer/coder) an application that introduces Ethereum to interested people! The project will take visitors through a series of steps that will introduce them to Ethereum and some of the endless possibilities they can do!

The demo, which is interactive and the user will have to press and use an app just like any other user, will take them from uniswap to compound to maker. Maybe even yield farm and register an ENS name! The idea is for newbies to understand how Ethereum composable Ethereum is and how everything works together and with each other! Hell you can even show them how they can tokenize their house, use part of it as collateral to then buy stocks? Ofcourse its all an interactive presentation and its not real Eth/money the user is dealing with.

The only reason I can truly see the future of Ethereum and how valuable it could be is only because I've been using it properly! If we can paint this picture to newer people then alot of people will "get it".

What are your thoughts on creating a S.A.F.E company (Sustainable Autonomous Financial Enterprise)

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 05:48 AM PST

The premise of this idea struck me after reading about an article about this website called Pornhub (never heard of it before until reading this article sksksk), converting to crypto only payments to run their business. Similarly, we saw a similar instance with Spencer Dinwiddie (NBA player) tokenizing his contract and Russell Okung (NFL Player) accepting his payment in Bitcoin. So this got me to offer up this question, late at night, half dazed on the NYE resolutions:

"> What is a term we can coin for businesses or people that want to be fully financially decentralized?

For example, when it comes to companies promoting sustainability. You have businesses being carbon-neutral, water positive, solar powered etc.. We need a term like that, but for companies who want to be financially decentralized"

That's what sparked this theory crafted session on this discord. Discord user justin bebis, offered up the term "Sustainable Autonomous Financial Enterprise or SAFE. We know it sounds dumb, but it's some what marketable", he says

What would be included into a SAFE?

Well for starters a company that chooses to default to crypto only payment solutions.

Another consideration that could be added was

" I also like the idea of having completely decentralized companies, similar to what Aragon is doing" - Clément

So what are you all thoughts of coining this new term for the etherspace?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 10:41 PM PST

I'm trying to purchase MasterCard gift card on bitpay with Ether, and I am not able to confirm he purchase. The app shows a continuous loading symbol after I confirm, my Ether is still present in the address and no transactions have taken place. Is there a disconnect between the app and ether protocol?
