Should we expect new mining boom soon ?

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 07:33 AM PST

Last time bitcoin was at $17k we had big mining boom and profitability on gpu mining skyrocketed. Is this to be expected again? Should we buy as much cards as we can ? Remember, its not very likely that gpu minable coins won't follow bitcoin, they always had...

Automation and remote management of mining rigs

    Posted: 17 Nov 2020 03:00 AM PST

I didn't see a whole lot of topics discussing these key tools being used as an overall strategy to maintaining great uptime, so I wanted to share my strategy on basic automation (no programming involved) and remote desktop management.

Windows Task Scheduler in combination with your motherboard BIOS are wonderfully simple tools that we miners can use to automate mining rigs to start by themselves.

    1. At least in MSI X570X motherboards (not sure about other brands), boot into BIOS > ADVANCED MODE > SETTINGS > POWER MANAGEMENT >
    2. Change the setting to POWER ON the PC automatically as soon as the motherboard receives electrical power. This ensures that whenever there's a power outage, the resumption of power will cause all of my rigs to turn themselves back on without my physical intervention.
    3. In Windows Task Scheduler, I added 3 apps to startup:
    • AMD Radeon Software (or Nvidia's equivalent) to start immediately at Windows startup. This will generally apply the overclocking/undervolting settings or at least give you a chance to confirm the settings are correct. Moreover, it's a visual cue that your rig was restarted.
    • Phoenix Miner (or equivalent) to start 2 minutes after Windows startup. This will give Windows enough time to load itself along with all other startup apps. Also gives you a bit of time to adjust your AMD Radeon settings if necessary.
    • XMRig (or equivalent) to start 3 minutes after Windows startup. This will give Phoenix Miner enough time to load the DAG and use some of the CPU processing power. Reversing the order of XMRig vs Phoenix Miner severely slowed down the ETH mining on my rigs.

In addition to automation, it is also quite useful to have remote desktop control over your mining rigs to manually force a Windows restart, update mining software, change settings and whatnot when you're not physically present or on site. Google's Chrome Remote Desktop https://remotedesktop.google.com/ is the easiest and most effective tool for this. No need to mess with router or firewall settings. Just install Chrome browser, install Chrome Remote Desktop extension on every rig, install Chrome Remote Desktop app on your phone, and give each rig a memorable name.

Ever since completing this setup, my mining hobby has almost become TOO boring and low maintenance. I hope you find the same boredom as I did.

Built a new AMD Ryzen system that will be going to my boy Joey for Christmas, honestly, it is a Stout build and I am a Lil Jelly. The Ryzen 5600X is a dang good CPU and AMD has really stepped it up with the Ryzen series, I am honestly impressed! Anyway, here is the data I have for you all.

The CPU stock will draw about 65W from the wall, or the total system power draw is around 120 watts.

    System Specs:

Asrock B550 Steel Legend G.skill TridentZ RGB 3200Mhz 16-18-18-38 Corsair H100i V2 Aorus Gen4 NvMe SSD - 500GB MSI GTX 980 Ti Gigabyte 850w Powersupply Thermaltake RGB fans

ROCM and AMD GPU linux mining

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 08:55 AM PST

Will somebody please explain the actual function of ROCM for Linux miners?

    [

This question sparked by Phoronix article -- http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=29704 -- and lack of clarity at ROCM web site about what it actually is and does.
